Tottenham boss Martin Jol was waiting to see a replay of Didier Zokora’s dismissal during the 2-1 win over Middlesbrough before deciding whether to appeal against the decision.

Zokora and George Boateng were given red cards for an ugly clash at White Hart Lane after Robbie Keane had come off the bench to grab the winner for the hosts.

Dimitar Berbatov had his dipping volley cancelled out by Robert Huth’s finish 10 minutes from full-time before tackles went flying in during a tense finale following Keane’s long-range drive.

Jol said: “I’ve seen it and I will see it again, I’ve got to wait for my reaction.

“The only thing I can say is that they know never to start a fight because they are disciplined. Zokora wanted to prevent a fight.”

Boro boss Gareth Southgate defended Boateng, adding: “I’ve seen it on the replay, the problem he has is that he raises his hands but he raises his hands to protect himself, so we will ask the referee to look at it.”

Dutchman Jol was pleased with his side’s response to the 3-0 defeat at rivals Arsenal at the weekend as Spurs recorded their eighth consecutive home win.

“We gave everyone a good answer,” he said.

“They came for the point, we showed the fans we wanted to work hard but we didn’t do that against Arsenal.

“The only thing we could do was have a good performance and win because we wanted to be in the top half of the table and we have six home games in the next eight.”

Keane was then taken off before the final whistle and faces a scan on his knee.

“Hopefully he’s okay,” his manager added.

If Robbie's not ok this will enable JD to get that run of games he's been savouring. We could see a red-hot Defoe during this hectic run of games... and my god could we use it.

Zokora's a tool. He shouldn't have gone in like that. Chimbonda deserved to go too!

I wouldn't want you backing me up in any situation. When it kicks off, everyone just can't stand back and analyse the situation, sometime you react for the cause. Most VC (Victoria Cross) winner reacted instintivley in time of great need.

Cannot knock Zokora or Chinbonda or anyone for coming to the aid of a mate.

there's a slight difference between world war II and a wednesday night at the lane. i haven't seen it, but players don't have the right to go storming in and expect not to be punished. it's possible to stick up for someone without resorting to violence/raising your fists.

What actually happened:

Boateng commited a moderate foul on Lennon.

Lennon retaliated by flying into Boateng with as much force as 5'-5" of Lennon could muster.

Boateng had about 0.3 seconds to react and make the slightest move in Lennon's direction before Zokora, perhaps seeing some glint in Boateng's eye that everyone else missed, flew in like an avenging angel, crashed into Boateng, who was still barely moving in Lennon's direction, and succeeded in starting a fight instead of preventing one.

It was a gross over-reaction on Zokora's part, as Boateng hadn't actually done anything ... yet. If anyone provoked the melée, it was Zokora.

Agree , I was in the Lower East and Zokora was a prat and had to go .

Didn't even see Boateng dismissed , but would say it was a LITTLE harsh . Certainly Pogatez could have gone for putting his foot in Hudds groin and Huth for telling the referee to eff off .

Chimbonda was holding Zokora back , not participating , thankfully the lino saw this or Zokora's actions would have reduced us to 9 men .

This is the third time this season he has got involved in something which did not concern him and there are no excuses , not even in the Terry case .

Anyone thinking of defending Zokora should see that he has made himself a target for every aspiring Christiano Ronaldo type and needs to sort his temper out .

Yes Zokora did over react but at the same time its what I want to see from Spurs - a bit of fight/steel and a team ethos that was clearly missing last Saturday!

I'm hoping Zokora does adapt to the Prem (especially in away games!) and can be a major influence in the centre of the park for us.

As for Chimbonda - I can't stop singing this guys praises, worth every penny and more if you ask me! This guy is definately up for the cause (I will admit I thought he was below par against the Arse - but then so was everyone else!)

In terms of the January Transfer Window - what do people reckon to Matty Taylor (Pompey) as LB and Giles Barnes (Derby) LM???

I'd like to say that at this moment I think Zokora is going to be an awesome player.

Too often we have lacked players who are competitors, who are fighters. Zokora is a kind of player we have never had in my lifetime - aggressive and physical, fast and strong, capable of dominating a game.

No, he's not there yet, but if he reminds me of anyone, it's Vieira when he first arrived at Arsenal. Or indeed Essien last season. While Zokora was an idiot yesterday and had to go, I'm seeing a Spurs legend in the making.

zokora and chimbonda defended assou-ekotto when he got barged by terry and done it again with lennon, fair play to both of them

Got to agree with GloryGlory my sentiments entirely!

The only worry I have is that I do genuienly rate Jenas - he's ability to cover everyblade of grass and still have the energy to bust in to the opponents box is an asset - but can a centre mid of Jenas & Zok get us in the top 4? Unfortunately I have my doubts.

though obviously i hope he proves me wrong, i dont like zokora. he has a terrible attitude, the sort of character that you expect from gooners and cheslkums. He dives, he provokes violence, and everyone else (team mates i mean) is to blame for his mistakes! On this evidence i would happily see him go in Jan for whatever we can recoup, and not even be replaced as I think Jenas and Huddlestone can be the future for our centre.
12. DannySafer
I was in the east lower too and I think you are being a bit too harsh calling the guy a prat. Zokora and Boateng were at it all game infact Boateng was dishing it out all over. Yes he over reacted, but i didnt see no kicks or punches or anything above shoulder height. It wasn't the Keane tackle on Inge Haaland FFS.

You cant ask for passion and then knock the guy for being aggressive in looking after a young team mate. The real prats were Pogatetz who went to hurt Huddlestone and Huth who blatently elbowed him late on, even Robbo lost it with Huth and im very surprised it wasn't shown on TV.
13. DoughBoy
I can't belive that people are not backing our man Zokora.

We all know that we have been missing that bite in midfield for years and all i belive is that he was trying to defend our pint size star from being confronted by boateng.

No punches were thrown and it was all hand bags.

Pogatez should have gone for the challange on Thud and so should Huth for the elbow which our England's number one did not take to kindly.

If we are looking for another central defender than look no futher than Woody he is awesome.
14. striebs
Zokora never misses an opportunity to get involved and as you say overreacted .

The reality of it is that unless he learns some self control he's going to get targetted repeatedly and we are going to keep finding ourselves down to 10 men .
15. murphy123
I don't think this observation is entirely accurate.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />

If you watch carefully, you'll see that just after the slight fail on Lennon, Boateng ran after the ball, but then he suddenly slowed down and raised his elbow up to Lennon's head height.

Why did he slow down when he wasn't near the ball, and why did he raise his elbow? I think he slowed down as one of the other players got the ball, so Boateng was covering him, but this doesn't explain raising the elbow so high.

Clearly he was intending to block Lennon or perhaps hurt him (as has happened in other matches in the premiership), it seems Lennon saw this and decided to barge into Boateng. It is highly likely Zokora also saw what Boateng was trying to do, which is possibly why he ran over so quickly when Boateng got up.

So for those who claim that Boateng didn't do anything, remember that it doesn't mean he wasn't trying to; he was simply made to look a fool by Lennon.

In which case, I do agree that Zokora over reacted, but I also think he was right in his intentions.
16. chrizzah
I didnt catch that but you could easly be spot on. Though i would call it a fight the way i understood that part was chimmy and zoko ran over to keep him away, there was a little pushing and they losted their balance a little to make it all look worse then it was.

Thought the red card was unfair for zokora and dont give a crap about Boatengs
17. UncleBuck
Zokora and Chimbo seem to have that "attitude" which has been missing for a long time, these guys give the impression that they'd be first out of the trenches which is brilliant! I'd sooner have our guys walk for something like last night than getting a red for a dive & then moaning to the ref, it's all about being competitve and passionate....just ask any Aussie at the moment
18. jassthebass
Zokora was defo in the wrong - but.......... I'm glad we had a bit of fight for a change - long may it continue - by the way Thudd was ACE I thought, what do you guys fink?
19. Durbs
We will see if BMJ appeals. If he does not, then he believes Zokora was wrong.
Hopefully Jenas is near fitness to partner Hudd in the middle!
