Uruguayan international Luis Suarez has been in superb form for Ajax this season and the tricky attacker has already scored 33 Eredivisie goals in the 2009-10 campaign.

Suarez's outstanding performances haven't gone unnoticed in Europe's bigger leagues and several clubs are believed to be interested in signing the highly rated forward.

Ajax head coach Martin Jol has made it clear, however, that Suarez will only leave Amsterdam for one of the European giants after Tottenham recently made an approach.

"Tottenham Hotspur president Daniel Levy recently approached me to talk about Luis, but I told him that they can't afford him. He wasn't too happy when I said that," revealed Jol to De Pers.

"However, I know that Luis wouldn't leave Ajax for a club like Tottenham anyway. He will only leave us if the opportunity comes up to join one of Europe's best teams. He has developed into one of the leaders of our team."

European powerhouses such as Barcelona, Chelsea, Juventus and Inter have all been linked with a move for the 23-year-old in the past couple of months.

Fair enough. I expected Suarez to head to Spain or Italy anyway
  2. wooderz
European power houses like Ar5ena1 and Chavski??? Hmm I think we can compete

    We tried ElHamdoui....no tnx...

It seems unlikely that Jol would talk about us in that manner. Although maybe he feels some anger towards "President Daniel Levy" for the way he and his gang were caught with their pants down with Juande Ramos in Spain.

I would put it down to the way it's been translated, often things seem harsh when you lose the 'fluff' that the English language can offer
  6. OrangeTHFC
Correct. That is just the way I read the quote in which Jol literally said it 'with all respect, but atm Suarez only wants to leave for the topclubs in Europe'.

dont rly need him nyways, only player we need is a proper cf who can play the lone role.

BERBATOV - would take him back like a shot - he would be dynamite in the current team alongside Defoe

It wouldn't be the first time an interview has been translated so badly the entire meaning was lost. Not that the journos are particularly worried about that though.

As a player for us Berba was the Biz. But as a man he is a cold fish prick, that leaves a bitter taste.

Romelu Lukaku, can play alongside Defoe or up front on his own, better buy than Berbasulk

I actually think we missed out on him. Due to injuries he never made it here, but looked a great prospect and has scored 20+ goals for Alkmaar the last two seasons.

Why are all you guys excusing Jol with your "translation" comments? If he was making it clear that his player was worth a lot of dough and taking the oppourtunity to give Spurs management a little dig, I don't blame him. Some of you think Jol is Jesus Christ or something.
  14. eddiev14
Or Mirko Vucinic from Roma. I reckon he's be a great foil for Defoe.
  15. Boony
The Dutch league standard has dropped considerably over the past few years, I dont think he would have made it
  16. Boony
Id prefer to stamp on his face, then fist his nan
  17. OrangeTHFC
Why not? The man is still talking respectfully about his 3y Spursperiod, so I don't even think it's a little dig in the slightest. And Jesus. Nope.
  18. StokeSpur
And Ajax can afford who exactly? pffffttttttt
  19. Boaman
    common sense
