Tottenham manager Martin Jol was unhappy with Noe Pamarot's dangerous tackle on Hossam Ghaly during the 1-1 draw at Portsmouth.

Egyptian midfielder Ghaly lost four teeth and required stitches in a face wound after being caught by a high boot by former Spurs defender Pamarot.

Ghaly played on after receiving lengthy treatment, but was substituted for Danny Murphy at the start of the second half.
Jol praised Ghaly's bravery, but described Pamarot's challenge on him as "cynical."

"I asked the referee and he said it wasn't a foul but when I looked at it again (on tape) I thought it was cynical," said Jol.

"I know Pamarot and he is a terrific lad, exceptional, but not when he is on the pitch. Ghaly was unbelievable. I thought at first the doctor told me he lost his false teeth but he was really saying four teeth.

"Most people would have gone to hospital and stayed there a week with that injury but he went back on to play and it was only later I noticed some dangerous signs and took him off again for the second half.

"If I had known the full extent of the injury I would never have let Ghaly go back on but I took notice of my doctor. I always do that."

Jol was happy with his side's fighting spirit at Fratton Park as they came from a goal down to earn a point courtesy of Steed Malbranque's header.

"Although we played some very good football at times in the first half you get nothing without spirit and determination which we showed in the second half," added Jol.

"Murphy did well again after his performance against Liverpool on Saturday when I thought we were unlucky to lose.

"It is good to get a point here because Portsmouth are so good at set-pieces but I thought we had four or five possibilities to score and their goal came from their first shot on target.

"We are doing okay. We are missing players like Ledley King and Robbie Keane and now Ghaly will be out. But when players like Davenport show character and determination like today you can get by. "I don't know if I will buy anybody in the transfer window but if I had been told at the start of the season we would be in the top seven, in the semi-final of the Carling Cup and had won six games in Europe out of six at this stage I would have taken that."

    Lost FOUR teeth???

It looked painful, but bloody hell...didn't tink he was particularly damaged apart from needing a few stitches.

No fucking wonder he had to go off...

Also a bit worried that our physio staff actually let him play the rest of the first half if the injury was that bad. They should've refused to let him back on.

And it's good to see that Jol doesn't have too high ambitions for this season. He knows, as well as most of the fans, that we are playing a lot more games than before and that we can't hope for much League progress this year (ie top 4 finish), and we should all be happy with a UEFA Cup spot through the League plus hopefully at least one cup (and hopefully one is the UEFA Cup).

While sometimes I scratch my head wondering about his selections and substitutions (Gardner for Malbranque???), I love Martin Jol.

"I know Pamarot and he is a terrific lad, exceptional, but not when he is on the pitch."

    and

"I thought at first the doctor told me he lost his false teeth but he was really saying four teeth."

What a legend. Fair f**ks to Ghaly for carrying on as well. Might shut some of the idiots up who talk about hos "lack of passion" etc.

Maybe we need a translator for the doc?! As ever well played Ghaly. He always gives 100% and feel Spurs will miss him. Hope he is not out for too long.

    New year, New attitude

Dont normally post on here but just read that Ghaly lost 4 teeth as a result of Paramots high boot, Im sure it must have been very painful (I know what its like leaving the dentists and thats under anasetic) and I find it very admirable and brave that he carried on playing and made a positive contribution.

For those of you who like to give him a hard time and doubt his commitment, ask yourself would you have been brave enough to carry on and fight for the cause in such bad weather conditions and with the shock of having just lost 4 teeth and the pain.

I know he can be a frustrating player sometimes but I think he deserves the respect of everyone for his bravery and commitment alone. I feel he has the abilty to make himself a very good player and maybe with a bit more pacience we may see the results of that but fans getting on his back certainly isnt going to assist him or any other player.

I posted this on the Portsmouth match thread earlier; I would like to in addition express my frustration with all the Jenas, Ghaly, BAE, Davenport, and YP Lee haters. Getting on the backs of players doesnt help, it does not help their confidence and Im sure it does not help any other players in our line up and if anything lifts the opposition players. I know if I was playing for spurs at the Lane and one of the home supporters was giving one of my team mates a hard time I think I would feel for my team mate.

It happened with Atouba which was sad because the fans won and I feel that its a cancer which attacks all that what football stands for. We all know how frustrating it is being a spurs supporter, but the frustration should NEVER be directed at our own players. For me its like bullying, and I dont like bullies. Any such frustration should be directed at the manager, which would be pathetic given the progress we have made in his time in charge. I personally have faith in Jol and his ability to correct are defects on the pitch and get the best results out of the playing staff which we have.

Its a new year, we have a lot to look forward to, but please I plead to all lets not make this cancer a part of our beautiful football club and tradition.

What a tough lad! But did he carry on playing simply to get the chance for revenge? Or was it just his great sense of professionalism that got him back onto the pitch? I would like to think it was the latter. Best watch your back next time though Pamarot!

Fair play for him carring on. I support any player who puts on a spurs shirt but that does not mean I agree they should be in the team. Ghaly gives the ball away to much as he did for the goal today; i think when he learns to his tricks and flicks in the right areas of the pitch he will be an asset to the club; well a good sub

On the TV slow-mo replay you can see one of his teeth flying straight out of his mouth. Gruesome!

I thought he had a decent game today. He looks like he has a few tricks in his locker, and he has the confidence and spirit to take on other players.

Like Christiano Ronaldo, he needs to learn when to use the tricks and when to just bang in a cross, and generally be a bit more aware of the positioning of his team mates and the fast pace off the game. If he gets that he could be a great player.

I would say that Malbranque looked very good playing on the right flank today.

If all our players play with the same determination and character of this YOUNG lad we have a bright future. Please dont forget that he is a energetic CENTRAL MIDFIELD player (a little like Hargreaves) being asked to play on the right wing. On a thread last Saturday someone commented that Egypt doesnt produce any good footballers, may I remind them that Egypt are the current and record holding African Champions.
  9. NeverRed06
i remember when ronaldo started playing in the prem and he never crossed the ball he just did tricks after tricks, but look at him now he has learnt and so will ghaly he just needs time and games

    Ghaly. I salute you.
[F**k the teeth let's try and win this game], with players like this it makes me so proud to be a Spurs fan

Happy new year all and believe me we will be opening the the trophy cabinet in 2007

    Spurs, I Luv Ya.

Very good analysis. At the moment Ghaly is either very good or very bad. He definitely has ability (less than Ronaldo obviously) but not unlike a lot of players from the continent and Africa before him, is struggling with consistency and at times the pace of the Prem in his first season. I definitely think he has the potential to become a very good Spurs player. Jol obviously rates him and who would disagree with his assessment.

Unfortunately patience in abundance is not something we Spurs fans are blessed with. If the likes of Bolton and Pompey had an injury list as long as ours they more than likely would be stuggling in the bottom third of the table. However we are in the top 7 and involved in 3 cups.

Have faith people. The pendulum will start to swing our way soon. In fact it may have already started.

Wow, do I feel gutted about doubting him! Four teeth?!!! I think we can all see that apart from plain skill on the field we have this extra apect of passion that maybe was not there before to such an extent. Chimbo against chelsea, Ghaly now. This is an example for all youngsters of how to act - loyalty and devotion.
New year's resolution... more patience for the new guys!
  13. justfookinhitit
Still think Ghaly needs extra shooting practice (but then again so do all the midfielders).

By the way, I've heard a lot of slating of Davenport but I think he's stepped into the enormous boots of Ledley pretty well. Can't be easy having to replace a guy like that and yet he's done okay. Great saving tackle against the Pool when Dirk was through on goal.

Ghaly is a legend in the making! What amazing commitment to continue after such an injury. I thought we would never see another Graham Roberts but this was exceptional.
Well done Ghaly - lets hope the fans will get off your back now

 I applaud you and your sentiments sir. No doubt there will be those here who will stick up for their right to 'hate on' someone who they have paid extortionate amounts of money to watch running around like a headless chicken and I have some sympathy with their frustrations. However, I think it's counterproductive and affects the whole team, not just the player being booed.

No confidence in our medical staffs ability to deal with head injuries .

First they let Zeigler play on with concussion .

Ghali must have been close to losing consciousness the way his head flew back . Fortunate he has such a thick neck .
  17. markspurs
I think ghaly is a decent player and looks to have a few tricks on him but he needs to learn how to not keep giving the ball away and how to shoot. I dont think he should play on the wing for us, dont get me wrong he has the skill but there is no pace what so ever. Great commitment from the lad to xome back on though.

The more replays I saw of that "tackle", the more it made me cringe. Seeing his tooth actually fly several yards out of his mouth made me feel quite sick. The force of the tackle for that to happen must have been huge. Well done Ghaly for being so determined.

Also, regarding Romeo's comments on picked-on players - I also applaud you. After the Liverpool game I couldn't help but have a go at an idiot who was walking down Tottenham High Road shouting his mouth off about Lee being rubbish and not having a left foot. He was looking for a reaction, so I gave him one - anyone who thinks Lee was at fault for us losing that game really needs his head examined. A fullback's job is first and foremost to defend, and in the Liverpool game, he did so very well. He also, despite having no left foot, managed to put a couple of decent crosses into the box. Which, in my opinion is a bonus from a full-back, since that really should be the left-sided midfielder's job. The idiot's clearly highly educated response was to ask me if I was half-Korean (amongst other things!) since I was sticking up for him.... Sigh. There's really no hope for some people.

Fully agree with most of the comments here. The permanent shortlist of three or four (usually foreign) players for post match slaughter really aggravates me. Is Ghaly going to be a Prem star - who knows at this stage. Does he give his all for the team - here is your evidence.
