Martin Jol believes Tottenham Hotspur's foreign contingency must continue to adapt to the Premiership, if they are to secure a top six place.

Currently lying seventh in the table, Spurs have lacked consistency this term, winning just once on the road in the league so far.

The replacement of England international Michael Carrick with Ivory Coast midfielder Didier Zokora and French defenders Pascal Chimbonda and Benoit Assou-Ekotto have taken their toll on the team.

But with a 12-match winning streak at White Hart Lane in all competitions, Jol believes there is reason for optimism as the season progresses.

"We've got players like Didier, Benoit and Pascal - who was here for a year luckily and was used to the Premiership. But it will take them a couple of months," Jol explained.

"I can't be too positive because away from home we are still not what we would like and we have to do better than that. For me it's only a matter of getting a bit more physical and a bit more English."

With 18 more matches left to be played, the Dutchman insists Spurs can push on up the league, heading into the New Year.

"Then we will be fine, because we have more than 30 points and we are in the top seven. Everybody said we were struggling at the start of the season, but there are still a lot of clubs struggling for the first five months," he added.

"I felt that our quality will pull us through - because we played Liverpool, Man United and Arsenal away - so I felt it was not a realistic picture."

Liverpool are the next visitors to North London on Saturday, ahead of a tricky trip to Portsmouth on New Year's Day.

    Robinson
    Dawson King
    Huddlestone Lennon
    Defoe

Thats a superb spine to the team if you ask me. But lets go for Micah Richards, Gareth Bale and Giles Barnes and fill it out a bit!!! :)

Foreign contingent!! Are they having a laugh??!!! Add Jenas and Murphy to the above and thats 8 first teamers who are English. Show me another club that betters or even matches that??!!

The main problem was the adjusting to the loss of carrick (now covered by Thud) and the integration of the new key players - Berby & Chimbonda. Add to that the injuries to lennon, king, jenas.... and thats your reason for inconsisancy.

    This article is really bad.

By 'more English' he means we have to battle more, show more fighting spirit. They have turned that around and stated that this is a sign that we need more English players.

To prove their point they've mentioned Carrick, who has really been replaced by another Englishman in Huddlestone, Assou-Ekotto who has replaced L.Y.P, and Chimbs who's replaced Stalteri, as far as I'm concerned that's 1 Englishman out and 1 Englishman in.

Typical bad journalism and a terrible article although a typically good point by Jol, lets show more fight and grind out those results away from home.

BTN1 and Kinger have already said it, so I won't bother.

I think Jol's point is that our squad has the potential to be higher than 7th, but certain players are still adjusting to English play so they haven't performed to their full potential.

When he says we should be more "English" he means in style of play... not player passports. Malbranque and Chimbonda are already "English", and Berbatov has got to grips with it very quickly.

But yeah, classic noddy journalism making it look like Carrick was the greatest disaster since 9/11

I think its a good sign that Jol seems a little unhappy at how the seasons going, 3 years ago we wold be very happy that we're not looking at the drop zone, thinking whether we have an outside chance of europe. Where Jol seems unhappy we're not top 4.

Like everyone has already said a terrible article, Jol saying we need a more English mentality to compete in the Prem and it will take time for new payers to adapt to the physicality of the Prem does not mean we need more English players.

Especially when as already pointed out we have

    Robbo
    Dawson, King, Davenport
    Huddllestone, Lennon, Jenas, Murphy
    Keane, Defoe
  8. BTN1
    keano for england then??!!
  9. dontcallme
didn't mean Keane is English but Britain and Ireland have the same mentality on the pitch and he has played English football professionally since he was 17

Quite agree that he's looking for an English style of play, not more English players. Having said that, can any club pick an all-English team to compete with:

    Robbo
    Ifil*, Dawson, King, Davenport/Gardner
    Lennon, Jenas, Huddllestone, Murphy
    Barnard/Barcham, Defoe

    with Routledge to come back?
    * ya he's on loan at mo
