Martin Jol has made an inquiry for Matthew Upson - because West Brom do not want to sell Curtis Davies.

Jol had made Davies his top January transfer target and was confident of landing him as West Brom had hinted they might sell during the window.

But Spurs are now considering other options because West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace has so far told interested clubs that he does not want to jeopardise any hopes of promotion this season.

That has meant them looking towards 27-year-old former Arsenal defender Upson, who looks likely to leave Birmingham.

Upson, fully recovered after a ruptured Achilles, has told Birmingham that he will not sign a new contract and only has 18 months on his current deal to run.

Not any better then Garner, let us save the cash for a new leftback or left winger

Waste of money. I see Gardner and Davenport as better back-ups for Daws & King.

Yep waste of money buy a left side player.

    Davies yes - Upson no.

it may even be possible to offer Gardner and cash for Davies or possibly "buy" Davies but allow him to finish the season with WBA.

Perhaps i'm living in a dream world. Who knows?

Upson is a miles better centre back than davenport and gardener, he is composed, mature and would be a very good back-up. I remember watching an interview with Henry saying that over 10 yards that he could keep up with him. I also know from a friends of Davenports family and he wants to leave, not us pushing him, he just wants to play more.

Davenport - 23 - young, reasonable potential, could be worth keeping, but if hes not happy in role as backup 4th centre back for this year and maybe the next, then he'll have to move on

Gardner - 26 - potential not being realised, capable of lack of concentration, sell him while he still has a value

Upson - 27 - Strong, quick, a hell of alot more football experience than the other 2, very reliable, mentioned in england squad not to long ago. Would be perfect 3rd centre back, as Davenport not quite ready for the big important games coming up, if we can get him on the cheap would be a great buy

I believe that Davenport should be allowed to stay as third choice, but Gardener is a problem as forth choice he is o.k. but he is never fit, and because of this would anyone risk buying him ( Charlton would not remember ).

I am sorry to bring up my gloom-laden prediction once more...but I really fear that ledders is seriously screwed long term. As all the posts rightly point out - why shop for Upson if you have two perfectly competent squad players in Davenport and Gardner?

The reason is that Ledley's knee MUST be screwed - he has been playing with an injury now for something like 18months. I can only imagine we are looking for someone to do a job while he submits to surgery. IF we sign a centre half - do not be surprised if Ledders goes straight on the operating table.

In that situation Upson would be a great pick and would be really motivated to shove it to the goons - I mean, they sold him and bought Cygan!!!!!!!!

I have absolutely nothing to back this up or inside knowledge - it is merely my hunch...I really really hope I am wrong.

If his knee was that screwed I doubt we would have waited so long to give sugery. Knees are not something you mess around...

Plus if his knee was very badly I doubt he wold be able to play full stop.

if his knee was really screwed up, he wouldnt train normally.. carvalho havent trained with chelsea for months, he only playes the matches, because they cant afford to loose him right now.

think upson would be good. all i know is gardner and davenport are a pile of shit. never seen any good games from either of them and when they play they make me panic as they are dodge. especially davenport!!!!
