    SPURS NEWS:

A relieved Martin Jol was delighted to book a place in the semi-finals of the Carling Cup after we were pushed all the way by Southend at the Lane on Wednesday night.

    Source: Official Site

The Championship side, conquerors of Manchester United in the last round, defended stoutly all night with goalkeeper Darryl Flahavan in fine form to deny Jermain Defoe and Mido. When he was beaten in the first half, Mido's effort came back off the crossbar.

Having gone into extra-time at 0-0, the quarter-final looked to be heading into penalties when Defoe struck with five minutes of extra time remaining, sliding in to convert Mido's cross.

Martin was quick to praise our opponents afterwards. "Southend made it very difficult for us and you never know, we lost against Grimbsy and Leicester in the cups last season and came back in the dressing room in a state of shock," he reflected.

"That could have happened again because I felt Southend played better than those teams last season and we went out on those occasions.

"They looked a good footballing side and it's amazing they are bottom of the Championship.

"I felt we lacked urgency in the first half, as if we had enough time to score the goals - but you have to score against teams like Southend, because then the game opens up.

"We didn't do that and made it difficult for ourselves but we showed character.

"I would have preferred it if we'd made it easier for ourselves because it meant we had players out there who played 120 minutes and will play again against Newcastle on Saturday.

"I'm thrilled to be in the semi-finals though. Two seasons ago we had quarter-finals against Newcastle in the FA Cup and Liverpool in the Carling Cup, when we went out on penalties. Now we are in the semi-finals of the Carling Cup, so that's a great achievement."

Major crap performance all round though.

Mido took a lot of stick. I thought that he tried hard, but looked well rusty from lack of games.

As Jol says - a great acheivement - when you consider how stretched our squad is - to win our 11th game in a game - and to reach our 11th semi in 40 years in this competition - tremendous stuff :)

whoops meant - 11th home win in a row-

    Can we edit these threads?

Just delighted to get through, if ManU can slip up against these teams then anyone can. est not to think too much about it and hope the team can ready themselves proper for the Newcastle game. Hope Tainio's ok. Another away win in the league could really be the start of something.....

Whens the draw to see who we play in the semi's?

    Hope its Wycombe. :)

For me people aren't giving enough credit to Southend even tho they dint really test Robbo they made it hard for us and these games are always tricky. Yes we could've been better but we had a bit of a makeshift midlfield and things just dint go for us early on.

If Mido's shot pings in off the bar we'd have gone on to rout them I'm sure. As it happened the ball wouldn't go in but lets stop giving players loads of stick, we won the game in the end and our form in general has been excellent of late. Lets get the win on saturday now, COYS!

well were through and thats all that matters in cup games.have said all along davids is passed it and hearing MJ shouting DAVIDS from the dugout when he gave the ball away (without any pressure) in a good position gave the feeling he feels the same.he shouted his name turned to hughton and said for f*** sake.Im sorry for all the people who think hes a legend and spurs through his blood but his not, remember he turned us down for barcelona thats when he shouldve come if he liked us so much!for me hes only here for the pay cheque after yesterdays performance he dont deserve it.you might say hes helped younger players come on but thats not his job thats the coaching staffs hes paid to play and he cant cut it against bottom of the championship side.

My friend go easy on David because anyone will see that he was and will continue to try to win for us. Maybe, he has pass it and maybe he has not. It is well documented that he has had an eye problem in the recent weeks. It does affect you in a number of ways.

Forget the performance for a minute I am just chuffed that this team has a winning mentality that means results can sometimes be ground out. Plenty of previous Spurs teams would have lost last night. All credit to the manager for that. He is not perfect though. Once again the lack of cover for Aaron Lennon was exposed. Not saying that Wayne Routledge will ever be a world beater but last night was made for him.

    Wayne Routledge is pants.
  12. DCSPUR
we probably would not have got Steed without loaning Routledge to Fulham for the season....worth doing I think
  13. sliding_daws
well, he cant even get into Fulhams starting lineup.

Nor did he manage to do so at Pompey...

Now a few things about last night whilst I was freezing my arse off in the West Upper:

    - Malbranque and Murphy can't play together on the wings. They both drift in towards the centre and give us no width. There was an over reliance on Slateri to get forward like Chimbonda does. Slateri is no spring chicken and lacked sharpness.

    - Mido - just constant moaning and the same applies to Defoe slightly less so. My nan could of lost their markers quicker than those two. No movement/spinning from Defoe and Mido's headers weren't very productive either. 76 mins couldn't come quick enough when Berbatov was brought on.

    - The majority of the midfield - esp Murphy - just looked like they couldn't be arsed on a cold Wednesday night. Hudd looked tired and Teemu lacked fitness. Malbranque was full of effort but he tried to dribble the ball into the back of the net. The lack of pace and urgency about our play was slightly worrying. Promising cross field passes would then lead the ball being played backwards to Robbo for the hoof up field towards Mido who wasn't getting much off Sodje.

    - My final thought was the bench.... it was too defensive for my liking: Gardner, Lee, Davids, Berbatov.

Slateri, Dawson, Davenport, Ekotto have not been overly played in the last couple of months. Gardner for Dawson would of been nice but Daws missed the Man City game.

When the midfield showed that it clearly ran out of ideas, there was no options apart from putting Mido on the left flank and Mido was just in one of his moods. I'm sure that a youthful and hungry O'Hara/Ziegler would of provided a better option than Lee and would of loved a chance to prove their worth.

When Teemu started limping - I thought I'm not going to be in bed any sooner and we're in for a long one. It meant Davids and the Hudd in the middle - who was going to be the attacking midfielder? With Huddlestone tiring, the answer was Davids. He tried and was very out of sorts to say the least.

The defensive element of the subs annoyed me the most. It was like we were playing the Scum, us trying to sneak a 1 goal lead and then play 5 at the back and hold on. I expected that from Southend. We knew that they had nothing to lose and was going to be hard to breakdown.

I've waffled far too much and can't be bothered with a conclusion. Roll on the 2 legged semi's.........

We won, that's all that matters, it was the sort of game where we could have scored early and stayed comfortable, but we did make it hard for ourselves by not pressurising their goal as much as we could have.

We've had several tired performances this season and there will be plenty more. In these situations Davids is invaluable even when playing far from his best.

    left winger

you are right, we did not play good on the wings, if we had we would have won by 4 or 5, we do miss lennon, and we do need a natural left winger, let us spend 10 mil on Taylor, who can play at left back or left wing, just think about us taking a free kick with Matt Taylor and Huddlestone standing over the ball
  18. Bixo
Rather we bought Gareth Bale then.. him and The Hudd standing over the ball for the next decade when Spurs are about to take a freekick is mouth watering...

Besides that I really do think Bale would make a great signing besides the freekicks...

some times you have these sort of nights. I think that the team were a little complacent about our chances of winning. Coupled with the fact Jol made changes and the team was a little disjointed, so attacking wise we didn't flow as we have done in recent weeks.

All in all, a win is a win. I couldn't care less if we play poorly as long as we win games - thats when you know you are progressing as a team, great teams can have off days but still win.
