The thing that stands out to me in that video - Onomah's confidence

That was the one thing I thought was missing when he played with Spurs - you could see it when he played with England U21s, but he seemed to lack that confidence with the 1st team. Glad to see he is growing into his talent.

Spot on. His body language has changed and his foot work, body work, and general verve is turned up to 11.

from the Villa forum

Spurs are a title chasing team, with one of the best strikers in the world. If anything they will buy another ready-made world class striker to supplement (llorente already?), there's no danger here on Davis.

Onamah is surpluses to requirements, they have; Alli, Erikisen, Winks, Deir, Dembele, Lamela, Benteleb all ahead of him for the CM & CAM. We will either buy him if we get promoted, or he will get sold for a nice english-driven transfer fee

They’re still playing him as an advanced midfielder oddly, wonder why club managers can’t seem to play him in his correct engine room role?

Maybe managers see something that some fans don't.

Maybe they think he has a higher potential there, or its a position that will improve his game in the long term, or it might be to do with in my mind legitimate concerns with his overall defensive play. I mean he is a good tackler, but when I've watched him there his positioning and whatnot is somewhat lacking.

I don't mind him as a no.10. I don't think it's his strongest best role but it is a role he has played plenty of times in the academy and played well. He doesn't play it in the traditional sense but he can play it well. While I think he'd be better in CM I think he could play no.10 for us or in the 2 behind the striker. Especially if he is showing that he can do it at first team level at the moment, then as he settles he may be able to move to a deeper position in the field.

It's not surprise that if he is played in one of his 2 best positions he looks good. Out on the wing or as a striker he'll look like a fish out of water

I think he’d fit in well in one of the 2 more advanced cm positions in the 352/3511 formation we’ve been playing lately

This boy frustrates me, because he has all the attributes to be a really good player, size, pace, good on the ball, but somehow it hasn't quite come together. For me he needs to impose himself more on the game & get involved more consistently.

Can’t imagine Josh has had many worse games so far than this.

Barely getting the ball, when he is giving it away, jogging about in no mans land between the forwards and midfield.

watched the 2nd half of this game. he clearly has no love for that floating 10 role. seemed a bit lost. not sure what the manager is thinking. each time he's been in CM, he's looked good. so why not continue to play him there?

Maybe Poch has asked Villa to give him games in specific positions to continue to develop him in the way he wants?

Villa are pushing for a promotion place.
I don't think think Josh's personal development
is high on their list of priorities.

He undoubtedly has the physical and technical ability to cope at the highest level, but his decision making is the key thing he needs to work on.

With the in mind, it just feels like his brain melts down when he's not in CM. He doesn't react quickly when he's given the ball further forward, and he tends to make poor decisions. That's possibly why various teams have persisted with him there - it's taking him out of his comfort zone to make him a better player in what are still formative years.

It's clear as day that he's a much better CM, I'm sure the club have recognised this too, but maybe they're trying to develop his all round game.

He still has too many poor games IMO, which is a real shame. It's quite difficult to say how he'll develop really, but i remain convinced that he's a premier league standard CM, just certainly not further forward

Playing in forward positions is the hardest thing in football. It's much easier to stop play than to create and make things happen. Most CM players basically are stoppers who perhaps can then offload the ball to someone else to use. Not a problem really as football is a team game. Not sure how Josh will develop but our players who have gone out on loan have very rarely ever made much difference to the teams they have gone to. We all hope for more Harry Kane's but the truth is that very few players ever make it to the very top in the game and Spurs are one of the top clubs in Europe so making it with us is harder still

If Bruce is gonna keep playing him in more attacking roles we should just bring him back
