His major problem, is that he is athletic managers think he could be moulded to a wide player when its unnecessary imo

His biggest problem is that he hasn't got a natural role. Central midfield in a 4-4-2? No chance. I wouldn't play him as one of a two in a 4-2-3-1 either. So he has to play as the creative influence in a number 10 role. Only he isn't creative. People keep talking about him coming back to Spurs and winning a first team place but in truth I am not sure he is even good enough for the Championship.

I agree. There must be a reason he is not played in 'his preferred position'. This is the third manager that has not consistently picked him in that role. He does have everything that you want but it doesn't seem to work. Sadly I think it's one of those huge lad in youth teams dominating, but then when he steps up he doesn't know how to compete kind of players. If he can work out how to compete he stands a good chance. I think His nonchalant play doesn't transcend to grown man football.

Agree he absolutely needs to work on his defensive game showing he can be relied upon to track runners and hold a decent shape, because he will never make it as a#10 imo. He's got the defensive side in him I believe he just needs to mature, and unfortunately that takes time. People really do need to remember what's it's like to be 21 years old.

Watching the Sheffield derby, and Wednesday is terrible, they can hardly get a moment on the ball. Goes to show these last two years in the Championship we've sent him to two absolutely horrible sides that don't give him the opportunity to play his game. Josh isn't exempt from his poor performances, but his performances arent in a vacuum and we should have sent him to a side of more ability.

This is where I disagree, IMO he is clearly a CM/DM. However you need a manager and coach who is willing to play the style to suit him. Part of this problem is down to our academy, we had a clear idea on how we wanted him to progress and then that has made him less malleable

Mason Mount isn't the typical idea of a CM for 90% of the championship but under Lampard, he is being utilised in CM and having a great impact. We do shit loans and they got worse after Sherwood left!

We should have sent Onomah on loan to Germany or Holland. Or kept him close as we're very light on CM's.

Agreed. It seems only the coaches in the England youth national team setup see it that way though.

I watched a bit of that game, he was on the left as well playing as a winger . Not sure what needs to happen for it to click for him. Maybe we should recall him in January, there's gotta be a better situation/team where he plays and develops as a CM/DM.

Horrible loan, why send him to a manger who cant decide on his best 11.

Hopefully he will be recalled if Lukaky doesn't get replaced with a decent manager before January

Why recall him? If he can’t get a game as a cm/dm at Wednesday he is even less likely here

My full quote read, "Maybe we should recall him in January, there's gotta be a better situation/team where he plays and develops as a CM/DM". Essentially, recall him in January, sit down and explore his options and hopefully find a better loan in January for him.

At what point when we look at the fact pattern here - that being, every manager is playing him further forward than he/we think he should play...do we stop and conclude that maybe he's not got whatever's required to play CM yet?

Everything I've seen in this kid tells me he has the physique and technical ability to become a very, very good CM. It's just that, at senior level, it's not quite working for him there.

We can put it down to the type of manager he's playing for, at least for a while, but at some point the penny has to drop doesn't it?

I'm really routing for this kid, but it's just not happening. He surely has the raw materials. I'd be inclined to say he should really focus on the tactical part of his game and his decision making.

For instance, long term, is he more likely to make a success of it as a Dembele type of CM or a Wanyama? I used to think the former. I wonder actually if it's the latter? I'd be surprised (personally) if he ended up as a winger, but everyone seems to be playing him there. He's still only 21 so there's time but he needs to kick on, and I'm convinced it's the tactical part of his game that's the issue

This is absolutely right - couldn't agree more. I think there's a case to be made for playing him as a focused DM. Give him the responsibility and help him learn that side of the game.

The reality though is that he obviously can't do that here and it's a risk for whoever helps him there
