I went to my first game at least 18 months before he signed, but Klinsmann was the first player I really idolised as a kid. I was too young to have known a huge amount about him before he joined, but older family members were trying to explain to me what a coup it was that he'd signed for us and you could tell that he was a class above.

Ironically though, his signing probably set the club back a long way because of the way he left. There were hardly any foreign players in the early days of the Premier League, but when people like him and Cantona made such a big impact and the Sky money started to come in, clubs started looking overseas to find the next hotbed of talent. However, instead of us kicking on from his signing, Sugar took his decision to go back to Germany extremely personally and went on TV with his old shirt and said "I wouldn't wash my car with this", then refused to sign any more "Carlos Kickaballs" foreigners. So instead of riding that wave and getting in players like Bergkamp, Zola and Juninho, all of which who joined teams that had come below us the year before signing, we were bringing in Chris Armstrong, Andy Sinton and Ruel Fox. By the time Sugar realised what a mistake he was making, our squad had been decimated and there was a clear financial gap opening up between us and the teams at the top of the league, which only got worse when the Champions League started expanding the number of teams involved.

I absolutely loved Jurgen. Even convinced my mum to name our new cat after him at the start of that season. I lived in Belfast at the time and this was the first season I ever attended any games. My first match was away to Blackburn and I went with a Spurs supporters club. Steve Perryman was caretaker manager and we lost 2-0 but I have fond memories. After the game we waited for an hour or so and saw the players as they came out and headed to their coach, got Jurgen’s autograph. Wish I had of had a camera. :/

I was at Anfield for the FA Cup Qtr Final, this time with a Liverpool supporters club and that really was a brilliant occasion. I’ll always remember the Liverpool crowd giving Jurgen a standing ovation at the end of the match. Given we were originally banned from the FA Cup that season, it seemed destined we were on our way to winning it.... and then came Amokachi and his hat trick. I had to work that day. Stuck on the till at McDonalds (I was 18) with the match on a screen in the lobby that I could see.... ?
My cat was also called Jürgen.

He was my favourite player as a kid. I ordered a shirt with Klinsman on the back and the club added the extra n at no extra charge. That was the last bargain I got from the club.

What a player though. The partnership with Teddy was something special.

My parents bought me a Klinsmann garden gnome wearing our 94/95 kit. It was essentially a giant Corinthian figure. Like this, only several feet taller:

Will ask the old fuckers if they can find any photographic evidence.

He was my hero as a kid. I still remember seeing the back pages and finding out we'd just signed the best striker from the World Cup.

I had one of those little figures but of Sheringham. When he left for Utd I strung it up by the neck.

One of my earliest memories was that game. We had a caretaker at school who was a Wimbledon fan so he arranged for kids to go to some games. I went to the Spurs one but was sat in the Wimbledon end. It didn't stop me cheering us on though. That was a great game to watch and Klinsmann was incredible.

Will never forget seeing the back page of the Standard that late afternoon, rubbing my eyes, looking at what was my first pint thinking I’m hallucinating

Happy to see/leave him in Korea now though 😊

I had my Klinsmann shirt on at the game. For some reason I turned it back to front and proudly displayed ‘Klinsmann 33’ all the way home. If only I went home. Left the nightclub at 3am with my shirt still on backwards… Young people are, and always will be, idiots.

Arguably the best striker in the world at the time (with Romario). It was a major coup, seemed to be about timing and Alan Sugar's opportunism and I'm not sure JK had an agent, who these days would alert the whole world and start an auction. I think deals like that could be done now though, sometimes the stars align.

I remember that first home game against Everton, it was one of those times when expectation was met with pay-off- that overhead kick just announced him as a new legend, basically.

I saw that over head kick in person, my second ever Spurs match.

If I recall correctly, Sugar all but kidnapped him 🤣

I was up in the East Stand- had a great view- one of my favourite memories of WHL.

Also remember the triangle of Colin Calderwood ahead of the two defenders at the other end...not a great shape...but happy times...

The real question I want to ask is how far down the relative food chain was this nightclub which was letting people in in backwards football shirts? I've been to some proper bottom feeder night clubs in my youth, but football shirts was always the final line in the sand.

Went home and away that season

Great year in the face of the adversity from the (sweet) FA.

I was adamant our name was on the cup once we got rightly let back in
