Is there a footballer who the media and people in the game used to rave about or currently do and yet you just don't see why ? If so tell us who it was/is. For me it was Paul Scholes.... All my mates who support Man Utd (sad people) reckon he was one of the world's best but I just don't see it myself.....sorry.

Be interesting to see who are your choices........

Paul Scholes was one of the best players this league has seen. Technically superb, terrific reading of the game, and one of those rare players who could play at his own pace and affect the game around him rather than vica versa. There are genuine reasons why Fergie says he was his best player in his 25 years at Old Trafford, and why he was an idol to the likes of Xavi.

Easy for me, though he does get a bit of stick anyway ... Benzema.

Completely average striker who gets goals handed to him on a plate by far superior teammates. I literally cannot recall a game I've watched him in where he was particularly good, yet he's still in Real's XI more often than not. What am I not seeing?

I agree but Scholes' career has been subject to a lot of revisionism thanks to the tiki-taka revolution, he's thought of more highly now than he was e.g. when he left the England setup in 2004. For a great bit of analysis on his career "The Mixer" by Michael Cox is a superb book on PL tactics and players since '92 with a good chapter that deals with all three of Scholes, Gerrard and Lampard.

For me it was always Paul Scholes....I have watched him play on numerous occasions and he always struck me as a precocious little sod who would just whack anyone that outshone him. He was talented and scored some fine goals for club and country but in my humble opinion by no means deserved the accolades he was given during his career. All my mates who support Man Utd (sad people) reckon he was one of the world's best but I just don't see it myself.....

If you were my best mate I would unfollow you on Facebook with pathetic comments like that about Scholes!

Also could you let me know where your sitting this season so I can ensure I'm nowhere near you?

I can thoroughly understand and appreciate you disagreeing with my opinion, that is your prerogative and one you are naturally entitled to. I wouldn't worry about sitting next to me at Wembley...the odds are astronomical and I don't do Facebook...so relax (y)

My apologies but I really didn't see what made him stand out as such an exceptional footballer. I shall delete my 'opinion' of how he played and simply leave it as the thread title implies....I just don't see it myself....how's that ?

James Ward-Prowse. There seems to be this assumption that he's the future of English football, when as far as I can see he's no better now than he was as a 17-year old, and doesn't have much about him beyond being fairly neat and tidy and being good (very good, in fairness) on set pieces.

I'm up for opinions and can understand people favouring one of Scholes, Gerrard and Lampard but he is my favourite English player ever and the one that I constantly talk about to my 7 year son and show videos of him on YouTube.

He is still the only English midfielder that could dictate the tempo of a game something Lampard and Gerrard neither could. Biggest problem was the 99 per cent of English fans who are morons and thought because he stopped scoring for his country he should be replaced with Lampard when in fact he is the one player we should of been building the team round.

To be fair the one current player I think is overrated by the media is our very own Dele Alli. He is a very good young player who's strengths suit the way we play under Poch but if he ended up at Real or Barcelona playing a complete different tempo, He would be so far out of his depth he would last one season and return to the premiership.

That is not saying he could never reach that level but at the moment it is very premature in my opinion.

Gerrard, Muller and Coutinho. The last one is what really irks me, a 1 in 5 game player, pops up with a worldie every now and then but actually contributes very little.

Cantona for me, good, sometimes great but never in the best of all time category some put him in. Maradonna, Pele and now Ronaldo and Messi. I'm not even sure he's in the Zidane, Figo, Puskas, Greaves, Best, Ronaldo (9) category behind the GOAT contenders. Maybe in the Gascoigne, Shearer, Klinsmann level imho.

Of course, I may be wrong but it's an argument I regularly have down the pub and his stats just don't live up to the legend and there were many games I watched when he hardly had any influence at all.....
