Puyol, effenberg, seedorf.

All good but I never saw them as being on the level of other European elite players of the time.

When it comes down to it outside of Spurs and England I don't watch a huge amount of live games. So I am open to accepting that those I am about to criticise are probably not correct just my limited experience while watching them.

Steven Gerrard: fantastic number 10, action man and all-round assist maker and goalscorer. But as a midfielder he was limited. Gave the ball away a lot and could only play at full pace. The amount of time England went 1-0 up and wanted to hold on while Gerrard just tried the spectacular was ridiculous. Often described as the midfielder who could do everything, he couldn't.

Raul - played for Real Madrid for 16 years and as a result broke a lot of records. But if many others were at such an elite club for such a long time they'd have destroyed Raul's record. He wasn't a bad player but not a true great and it's no coincidence that Spain were nothing special while he played for them.

Haha, my mates have a bit of an in-joke about Puyol being woeful

To be fair, I've only ever seen him play on TV 4 or 5 times, but every time he did something crap and generally looked a bit clueless

That said, everyone else seemed to rate him and you don't stay for many years at Barca without being a good player

Probably just unlucky to see him when he's having a few bad days

Puyol was overrated tbf, basically a Spanish Collocini (based on hair alone) that was always surrounded by world class players.

Seedorf was good but never considered elite, really. Raul was a brilliant striker.

I honestly can't get on board with Seedorf not being good. As Spurrific's just said, he was never seen as the best of the best, but I think he was an absolutely fantastic player. Judging from the many charity games in which he's participated since his retirement, he hasn't lost an ounce of his ability.

Ronaldinho.

Well, I do see it with him - but I don't think he should be mentioned in the same breath as Zidane, R9, Messi, CR7 tbh.

Just seen this, bloody hell... Scholes was a tremendous player. Technically very good, had that nasty streak though that meant he could mix it in the centre of the park, and also, more so in his younger days, had a wonderful timing of his runs into the penalty area and was a good finisher (head or feet), and his career stats don't really do that aspect of his game justice.

I'll be honest that I think the plaudits of his latter years when he solely played as a deep playmaker were a tad overblown, a lot of the time you'd hear 'there is Scholes dictating the game' etc. when it was just a standard cross-field ball to the open fullback, but he was late 30's at this point and his legs were well gone, in his prime what a player.

As for others mentioned, Seedorf struggled for consistency and to find a home for some of his career, but was a classy and real team player for Milan. Puyol was never the best at anything, but scrapped his way to the top and was a leader. Still two very good players.

He was also exceptional for Schalke though.

Like I said I wrote what I did open to being wrong as my viewing of him is quite limited.

But I will maintain my view that he wasn't up there with the very best number 10s of his era.

Yeah man a lot of you need to have a fucking word with yourself.
Partially agree, partially don't understand why this would come as any kind of surprise to people just going round disliking every name. Its hardly going to be a list of shit players, considering they wouldn't be rated highly in the first place.

I said I saw "it" with Ronaldinho, but that he didn't belong with the other players. He was undoubtedly up there, but just outside the top tier I'd say.

Tbf, he's the original YouTube pundit babe. Those that didn't have the true eye for a footballer raved about him and his stepovers, whilst purists such as myself knew that Zidane and Ronaldo were the best.

The thread is about players you just didn't see the fuss about.

We all watch a limited amount of football so it is not hard to understand that sometimes you'll watch a great player and not see what the fuss is about.

I remember Ferguson talking about Raul as the best number 10 in the world, so I'll take his word that this was his position even if he also played others.

Ronaldinho was the best player in the world for a time, no doubt about that.
