    RUMOURS:

Spurs striker Robbie Keane could be set for a shock move away from the club to Aston Villa when the transfer window opens in January if reports over the weekend are to be believed.

    Source: all3points

The People newspaper yesterday claimed that Keane has been lined up as the number one target for new Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill.

The paper claims O'Neill will launch a £7 million bid for Keane and because the player has lost ground to fellow striker Jermain Defoe in recent games, after the Englishman has scored 7 goals in his last 9 games, could be the reason why a deal is allowed to go through.

However Spurs boss Martin Jol has publicly spoken of Keane's significance to the team and any bid is likely to be met with some resistance.

Looks like DM was right about the Defoe stories stopping and the Keane stories starting.

Here we go again ..... Defoe's starting games now so its Keano's turn to leave in January, even though the guy is injured!

    Between 7-9mill would be ideal...

IMHO keane just isn't a top for player. At times can be amazing (tearing Boulharouz to shreds at the lane), but on other occasions (more often then not) is far to wasteful in front of goal.

For me Defoe is a definite starter, so if we can get 7+mill for Keano, i'd take it. Its either him or Jermain neither will be happy on the bench, and somethings got to give.

Dear sports editor at The People,

Thank you for the nice story, but sadly you have about as much credibility as your mates at The Sun!

These Defoe/Keane stories are getting a bit tiresome, aren't they? I suppose this one is taking it to a new level in that Keane hasn't even been dropped yet -he's inured! Defoe and Keane have coexisted in the same squad for 3 years now. Personally I think it's working out okay.

First off, I don't think this is a credible story.

The fans love Robbie and, being Irish, I think Robbie's been a great player for Spurs. I'd like to see him stay.

Having said that, I think Defoe is more of a natural striker and is more likely to score. It was a shame that he got dropped in the second half of last season. It dented his confidence, and cost him a World Cup place (which maybe cost England the World Cup).

I would prefer to see Defoe as the regular strike partner for Berbatov, with Mido and Robbie as back-up.

I don't know if Keano would be happy with that - remember the time he stormed down the tunnel? It's to Defoe's credit that he has never reacted in this way.

while i agree the article is toilet...

i cant help but feel that while squad rotation can work at times, in certain areas or when new players are brought in stability and building working partnerships are key.

i think that shows with the good form of both defoe and berbs at the moment, also our defence always looks strong, why because if fit and avaliable robo, king and daws will always play at the back.

no doubt our mid field would be all the stronger for having a settled '1st choice' four, we have enough games this year to rotate only in 'lesser' games or when players look jaded or out of form, or for specific formation/tactical reason.

therfore, while the article might be pish, even when keano comes back i would keep defoe berbs at the partnership, if kean is willing to start from the bench and wait for defoe to 'lose' his place then fair enough i would love to keep him, but he might not be hammy with that and i wouldnt just rotate strikers to keep everyone happy, as results will suffer.

We should swap him for Father Christmas

    WHAT DID I SAY??
    :duh:

Actually, I said "I give it 5 days".

    It's taken them 2 days.

I think we can only say we've had a form striker partnership for maybe a week or so, which incidently has coinsided with Keane's injury. Jol, rotated the strikers earlier on in the season to try and play the strikers into form but none of them were playing particularly well, now you can say both Defoe and Berbs are playing well and I would be very suprised if we started rotating now, even when Keane comes back it would take injury or loss of form for him to get back into the side.

Saying that I would rest players for this weeks game against Southend as for me this is a squad game not a form game.

How could you possibly be content to see Keane leave. We would have to double your asking price 7-9m to regain his quality in today's transfer market. I admit that I'm frustrated by Keane as he is not as prolific in front of goal as we would like but he makes up for it with his work rate in coming deep and introducing his creativity from further back - how many assists does he have to his name? How many times has he come off the bench to save us? How crucial was Keane in the latter part of last season in our push for Europe? Has he not proved that he is willing to adapt to Jol's rotation policy?

Involvement in Europe and progress in domestic cup comps will mean more starts (more goals) this season for Defoe and Keane.

 We're all dreaming of a team Robbie Keanes... a team Robbie Keanes...a team Robbie Keanes...

While i agree that its probably just another one of those 'Defoe/Keane goin when there not in the team stories' its well documented that O'neil is an admirer of Keano and its not the 1st link he's had with him, if it were true i reckon we should sell for 7m and spend it on Darren Bent or Dean Ashdon, asuming either were available of course.
Keano does have his good days but is worse than he is good, theres much better options out there and we should be looking to improve as and when we can, that said, we musnt sell before we buy.

While were here, my mate, who's a Liverpool fan, reckons were going to swap Defoe for bellamy, I laughed and said 'yeah k' but he said its what he'd heard.

(note, i'm not dreaming of a team of Robbie Keanes)
