I would be really happy if we signed Jones, as I rate him as a very good player. He is quite similar to Adebayor in his playing style, I think.

He would be a good player together with Defoe, for sure.

Yeah, he has that Adebayor/ Kanoute aura about him. He is good with his feet, I am not sure why people think he's an oaf.

I think he would be a very good signing actually, the money is extreme but frankly I would be suprised if Sunderland would sell to us at all (if they did they would want top dollar because we are rivals with them for the drop)

Bottom line is any of the teams down the table with us are not going to want to sell to us now because it makes no sense to strengthen your rivals and weaken yourself for the run in to a relegation battle.

The only way we are going to draw players from these clubs is by offering over the odds (offers they can't refuse*not in the Godfather sense)

14m sounds alot but in todays market it really isn't that extorsionate!...besides we all sit here and say "not for that price" but it aint coming out of our pocket! if he is a player that improves our squad who cares what price we pay! What annoys me is spending 16m on D Bent when he didn't/hasn't improved our squad!......as someone has stated previously players like Modric, Lennon, Defoe will not flurish unless there is a Palacios, Jones type player to have that balance!

Why doesnt Harry get jones and give bent in return, if jones wanted to come then sunderland wont be too disappointed as bent aint the worst replacement for jones. I like jones, we need a real target man for the likes of defoe and pav

the fee Bent, whether he was needed or not or he has delivered value or not, could have a semblence of justification as he scored a hatful of goals at Charlton and looked a decent player. Jones doesnt score many goals at Sunderland averages at about 1 in 4 doesnt have great touch. I would say £14m isnt just extortionate its taking the piss big time

Kenwyne..?? I can't go on anymore...!!

I must be honest I haven't been on SC for some time now as I can't handle the pain that the Lillywhites are causing at present, and from the look of things it isn't gonna get much better any sooner. Anyway I’m still just about reading bits and bobs here and there, but when I stumbled across the following gem I was amazed.

Source: BBC Football Gossip
Spurs are set to make a £14m offer for Sunderland striker Kenwyne Jones after their move for Inter Milan forward Adriano was scuppered by the Brazilian's wage demands. (Daily Express)

There is no way in the world that Kenwyne is worth a fraction of that amount, but the worrying thing is I can see us paying it as the rot continues to eat away at what is left of a once great football club. Without doubt we have become the laughing stock of top flight English football and I’m not sure I can go on any longer.

I fear the worst and I can’t even see Harold be thy name getting us out off this one…..

its now on BBC Ceefax with it's own page, saying 15 million now... how is he worth anythnig near that, and why are we going after plaers in the mid and lower parts o the tables?

maybe we need players like that to help us get up the table, but what about when we are up there, will we really want to play Kenwyne Jones next season when (if) we are challanging for a top 6/4 position?

at present our side is suffering as we dont have a forward able to hold the ball up for the rest of the team to play off? i've watched jones & what i like about him is the opposition defenders never have it easy like a strolll in the park with our current batch, he holds the ball up well enough and with better players around him could be lethal.

arry does'nt seem happy with the midfield balance and if he thinks palacios could add the positional awareness currently missing in centre mid to allow modric to struct his stuff then i see no probs in shelling out £12m-£14m on him(held his own against the mancs last night) if he brings something jenas & zokora dont posses.

I think we've bought too many players over the past 4 seasons. I don't mind if we pay over the top for a player if he is the right player and someone we will stick by.

I don't think Kenwyne Jones is that player mostly based on a good friend being a Southampton fan and saying he isn't that good even when he was playing for Southampton.

I actually think he would be a really good addition to our forward line, someone with real physical presence who puts himself about and can challenge effectively in the air and hold the ball up.

However, and its a big however, we have more improtant areas to address, and the price he will cost would be excessive.

We could do a LOT worse than Kenwyne Jones in out current situation.

I wouldn't be surprised if he would have the same effect for Defoe as Heskey has had for Owen.

Let's worry about that if and when we get there shall we because last time I looked we were 3rd from bottom and deservedly so. We've been poor for 20 years or more apart from a couple of seasons. There's nothing states that top 6 status is ours. The team has to work for it and it simply isn't at the moment. Why would a top striker want to come to join a relegation battle? 14m is more than I would want to pay for him so I agree with that but let's not get elevated ideas of who we should be signing due to a scenario that is simply beyond us at present.

I think we all need to face facts. How are we going to attract top players from top teams when we are in a relegation dog fight?
Don't get me wrong I don't believe for one minute the players that we have bought recently and the ones that we are currently linked with are worth the money that has/ will be paid but this is a result of the position we are in, not just in the league but financially as well. Other clubs see us as desperate and with a few quid to spend so the price shoots up.
IMO Harry has had time to assess the squad that he has and has obviously identified what a lot of us have know for some time, we have a soft centre. If you look at the players that he is linked with (baring JD) they are all big, strong and athletic with battling qualities. This is exactly what he done at Portsmouth. Then when he sees us as a strong side he will try and add that bit of attacking influence, hence him buying Defoe and Crouch. Look at the tactics at the weekend. Baring Modric he put out a team that he thought would battle and fight for at least a point. Lennon has been one of our better players this season but was dropped in favour of playing Zokora on the right. Dos Santos could have easily benn brought on on the left but didn't get a sniff.
I can see free flowing attacking football being compromised over the coming moths in favour of getting points on the board, but if it work, and its a big if, and we stay in the EPL then I will be happy.

Same could be said about paying 10 - 14 million for Wiggy's Wilson Palacios. I'm afraid in this ridiculous current transfer climate the prices are well over inflated & Man City aren't helping matters.

I saw somewhere that Arsenals biggest transferfee was £12M for Wiltord. Is this true?

If true it just makes are signings and potential once even more crazy
