Southampton keen on Tottenham's Kevin Wimmer to bolster defence - but won't go near £20million price tag

The Austrian has struggled to cement a starting spot at White Hart Lane since arriving from Cologne in 2015

Southampton want Kevin Wimmer to bolster their defence.

Tottenham are ready to sell the Austrian defender who has struggled to nail down a place since moving to White Hart Lane from Cologne two years ago.

Southampton are interested in the 24 year-old though Spurs will have to reduce their £20million asking price before they firm up their interest.

The south coast club are in need of a long-term replacement for former skipper Jose Fonte, who joined West Ham in January.

And Wimmer would be viewed as a potential partner rather than replacement for Virgil Van Dijk.

I reckon a large number of PL teams would want him.

They'd be stupid not to.

Can't see anyone going 20m though, too unproven in the league for that, but starting out with that asking price maybe we can get around 15. I'm fairly certain he's better than many others that are sought after in the transfer market: Maguire, Gibson, Keane

Not to be that guy. But the Mirror fucking got what club we bought him from wrong. lol.

I agree that 20 seems a bit steep for him. But anywhere between 10 and 20 is a good sale imo

Still see a player in there and hope we keep him.

I won't forget his spell two years ago when he made us forget that Jan was injured. He was damn near perfect and had some heroic blocks when he was in.

I for one felt he looked a bit out of shape last year, but I honestly don't think we will find a left footed option for verts that is 1) a cheap option and 2) familiar with our setup

Would be good business if we can sell Wimmer for £14million + and invest in either Ginter or Joel Veltman.

Feel frustrated about this one. Very shrewd signing we made here, tbh, and I feel for him that he ran into a bit of a brick wall with Verts and Toby. As someone said, flawless when he stepped in for Verts just over a year ago or so. Can be hard for CBs to perform well without being able to get a run in the team and build form so I don't blame him at all for some bad games last season.

He's still an absolutely excellent potential player in my eyes, but I guess I have to accept that he is right to be wanting regular football somewhere and that it looks like we will have to sell.

I happen to think 20mill is a very fair price for him in the current market, and would be an astute signing for someone but yeah fair enough, whatever happens it looks like we will at the very least make a healthy profit on him.

I would still consider him a successful signing even if he is sold for £10m-£20m because his problem was not being a badly scouted signing or a bad player, it was more how formidable our first choice CBs are. Toby being a great example of someone who couldn't find his place in the Atletico team for similar reasons

Entirely this.

He slotted in seamlessly in that period and was near faultless.

20m is too cheap imo.

We would then have four right CBs and no proper cover for Vertonghen at LCB. How is that good business?

Veltman or Ginter could be a good signing for us, but not as a direct replacement for Wimmer.

Right/left footedness aside, I also don't think they are necessarily an upgrade on Wimmer. Veltman is 10 months older than Wimmer and Ginter is only 2 months younger, so it's not like we'd be bringing in someone younger with more potential. We would be taking playing opportunities away from a 19 year old with bags of potential though (CCV...a right-footed CB).

These were mostly prior to the new TV deal being announced, so prices were less inflated. Which would we want to swap Wimmer for?

Stones - £47.5m
Otamendi - £32m
Mangala - £40m
Bailly - £30m
Mustafi - £35m
Lovren - £20m
Sakho - £18m

At least in my opinion, this shows £20m for Wimmer would be a good signing for most PL teams.

It's about Wimmer wanting out, not us wanting rid though. And if we're going to allow him to leave then it must be at a price that clubs beneath us are willing to pay - the list above were hyped in form players going to City, United, Liverpool and Arsenal.

Poch has shown that he'd rather play Toby and Dier than have the natural left footed CB (Wimmer) cover from Verts.

If we sell Wimmer for 15+ mill and pick up a CB Poch wants to work with for a relatively cheaper price, then its a good deal. The other stuff you mention about age and potential is not up to me.

Would be a shrewd signing for Southampton for 40% of what they think Van Dijk is worth. I don't think we can buy a player with Wimmer's ability for 20m but have a feeling his preference for playing in a flat back 4 is what has kept him on the sidelines. I wouldn't mind an older, experienced stand in at LCB though - someone in the Hector Moreno mould. Mawson could be a good fit but I'd imagine seeing Wimmer's lack of chances would put most players like him off.

In theory next season we could still have Davies as back up to Verts, even with Rose still playing.

I like him but next season is a World Cup season and I can see him wanting to play more for this reason alone.
He did great the first time he covered for Verts, but was not so great last season.
CCv although untested could be more in our plans next season.
If he stays, trains and fights for his place fantastic, but I wouldn't begrudge him a move for more playing time.
