Ledley King insists he will not allow the constant speculation surrounding his fitness to derail Tottenham's bid for European football. Spurs are just one point off the Europa League places with three games remaining following a remarkable transformation under boss Harry Redknapp. And skipper King says he is still stunned by the level of coverage his chronic knee problems receive, despite Tottenham continuing to hit the headlines for all the right reasons.

"It does surprise me how much it is talked about," said King.

"I think that some people still hope that its condition will improve, but I've had enough time to come to terms with it now - what it means to me, and for the rest of my career.

"It's frustrating of course, but it has made me a different person and in many ways a different player.

"I have to look at the positives and the capability of what I can still do in the team."

King rarely trains with the rest of his Tottenham team-mates and instead relies on swimming to keep himself in shape.

But the 28-year-old is adamant he can continue to star at the heart of the Spurs defence, despite admitting his frustration atmissing out on the constant banter around the training ground.

"If I can't train with the other guys I am missing out on a lot," he added.

"I realise that - fitness primarily, but also some of the camaraderie that only comes with time on the training pitch.

"But I make up for it in other areas by preparing and consistently assessing my game mentally, more than I ever used to."

"My physical gameplan over the last couple of years has become more limited, so I'm working on aspects that are within my control.

"I'll still go into challenges wholeheartedly, as would every good footballer."

    gotta love ledders.

Most talented player we have produced for so long. Remember the hype about him before he'd even broken into the first time. Everyone at the club knew Ledley was going to make it long before his first game.

Nostalgic, but I remember one of his first spurs games when he started with Alton Thelwell. Lol. Long live the king

    Yea i have to agree,what a Spurs legend - Ledley King's not bad either!
King is a top top player for us & is Spurs through & through, just wonder how many games he gonna play next season though is a worry.

I think the rest of the team, on one day of the week, should all join Ledders whereever he does his swimming training, just as a show of unity and respect for their club captain. I'm sure they'd all enjoy it and be happy to do it and it would give him the chance to still feel much more part of the banter and not out there on his own!

    Long live the mighty King!

Not sure Levy would want a whole team having a pool party in his back garden!!

It would be good when Spurs get a pool at their training ground then at least he'd be able to get in on the banter at lunch or over a game of table tennis. Hopefully this won't be too long as i'm good friends with one of the contractors who have put a bid in to build a pool

I remember that too. They were both thrown in against Liverpool as we had injuries and they both did well.

Poor Alton has just been released by Leyton Orient.

The full interview this is from is in this month's Hotspur magazine, I read it last night and I have so much more respect for Ledley than I did before...anyone else would be so defeatest and possibly even consider retiring, but not our Ledley - he has got such a strong mentality and that just goes to show why he has been club captain for the past few years. For people in my age group, when we're 50+, we'll probably talk about Ledders in the same breath as people who were around in the 60's talk of Blanchflower, Mackay, etc.

The King is Led, long live the King
