21 July 2011

Share

We have reached agreement for Kyle Naughton to join Norwich City on a season-long loan.
The former Sheffield United right-back spent last season on loan in the Championship with Leicester City where he played 36 times and scored five goals.

Came on at left back today. Shit move for the kid if he's going to keep getting shoved out there.

Why? he can play Left Back and Right Back. Im sure that when Walker came into the Sheff Utd team, Naughton was playing Left Back ?

He's a right back, he's right-footed. How many other fullbacks play on the opposite side to their natural foot? They only stuck Naughton there so they could fit them both in.

Y-P Lee? I'm sure there are more, but I can't think of any right now.

It can help to play on the "wrong" side, as it does with wingers. Benny is very left-footed, so every pass he makes to Bale is either a chip over the top, or with the outside of his boot. A right-footed LB would be able to come infield and play a right-footed, angled pass into the space in front of Bale, for him to run onto. I'm not saying that's why Naughton is being played there, just that it isn't always a stupid idea. Buying two young RBs when you already have two international RBs, and good backup for the position, now that is a bit stupid.

Dennis Irwin was right footed and played left back and he wasnt bad was he! Fabio ended last season as Man Utds right back and he is left footed as well.

Fabio is right footed. You going back a decade to find a player that fits proves my point. He's a right back.

Phillip Lahm. And Fabio has played left and right back for United.

It all depends how he is deployed, and what the team looks like. If they have an out and out left winger or play with a 4-3-3 then there might not much chance for the left back to overlap, so he'll be more useful cutting inside and getting involved that way

It just doesn't work, especially from a defensive p.o.v. Lahm sucked at LB and he himself said he didn't like playing there, they've moved him back to his natural side now.

Whose his competition for the right back spot?

Can't remember his name, but he was pretty much an ever-present for them last season. Martin or something?

EDIT: From Russell Martin's wiki: On 7 May 2011, he was the runner up for the Norwich City F.C. Player of the Year award to winner Grant Holt, in a season where he played every minute of each game.

Actually he has been moved back to LB for this up and coming season. Lahm is a great Left back he has played there most his carrier

doesnt prove your point at all - infact does the opposite as Fabio has played the vast majority of his career at LB, he played a few games towards the end of the season @RB but thats all. As said above as well, Lahm has reverted back to LB where he has spent most of his career.

That's their loss then as he can be got at when playing LB.

Either way you've given me about 0.08% of top flight fullbacks that have been a success on the opposite side to their natural foot, congrats.

Salcido has always looked nifty to me...

Ferrera as well... Look it is an advantage to be left footed and a left back, but by no means does being right footed stop you from being able to be a left back. Infact many right footed offensive fullbacks find it easier to go forward going down the left side.

Were QPR is for him?

Maybe he was crap in pre-season so they're playing someone else? Either way, just because he's not starting today doesn't mean he won't get plenty of game time the rest of the season.

He was all set to join QPR but then I think Norwich offered a larger loan fee, obviously a few extra thousand is more important than his development.
