I've tried (and sometimes failed) to stay awake because these programmes are on from 11.30 pm until after 3 in the morning but what I have seen is fascinating.

They are on the history of football and various teams and have included topics like fascism and politics that have affected teams and players, with some incredible film footage. Last night Brazil was highlighted and there was some breathtaking stuff from Pele and Garincha as well as personal stories. Also some great footage of Lev Yashin in World Cup games and as clips of Sweden and Hungary.

The night before was about Russian players, some of whom were sentenced and sent to gulags in places like Siberia because they lost games or because they upset high-ranking officials. In particular, the story of Eduard Streltsov is amazing and Wikipedia have an article on him:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eduard_Streltsov

He's a legend of his time and the film clips of him showed just how good he was.

I wish these programmes were on a bit earlier as they are superb watching and a real insight into football history. They aren't on every night of the week but I'll be looking out for them and trying to stay awake. I hope they'll be repeated at earlier times eventually.
