'Leader' is spelled L-E-A-D-E-R, not L-E-D-L-E-Y

After every visit I make to this site I am encouraged at some point to voice an opinion; I have now decided it is time to voice that opinion on the subject of leadership.<?xml:namespace prefix = o /><o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
An ancient Chinese proverb states, "An army of a thousand is easy to find, but, ah, how difficult to find a general." How bereft of a general we have been since the loss of Ledley, our leader? His loss has cast a long shadow over the team that has not won a league game since Boxing Day. <o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
Our performance against Newcastle optimised the lack of leadership and character, which has come to typify our side as of late. The lack of a recognised leader, a stalwart who will rally the troops in times of hardship is plain for all to see. The absence of Ledley King has meant the absence of confidence, of calmness and assurity, which is made even more infuriating by the fact that the team as a whole is a very talented team. <o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
Former Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli once said, "Nurture your mind with great thoughts; to believe in the heroic makes heroes." Where are our heroes? Where are our champions who instil belief and inspire courage? <o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
In the game against Newcastle, the overwhelming feeling that I had was that even at 2-1 the players didn't encourage a belief that they were going to see off our injury plagued opponents and win the game. In fact our opponents seemed to have been galvanised by their plight and in true 'Balboa-esque' fashion managed to pull off a dogged victory, which highlighted all our problems. Contrast this to the performance of Man Utd gave in their 3-1 victory over, and it tells quite a different story. <o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
All throughout the match the players demonstrated a hunger and purpose to obtain the victory; the fact that they scored as early as the fourth minute, and the persistent nature of their third goal were a testament as to why they are the best in the country. Great performances from Rooney, Ronaldo, Scholes, Giggs, Neville etc have been exemplary of their success as a whole. All led by example on the field with a demonstration of desire and purpose which breeds a confidence and positive mindset that is tantamount to success and achievement. <o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
The Spurs team's indifferent season is not due to a lack of ability or skill, it is because there is not the enterprising attitude or character which is integral to any championship winning side. Every Spurs fan would be in full agreement that the pool of talent available to Jol has been increased greatly; the purchases of Berbatov, Zokora, Malbranque, Chimbonda and the emergence of Huddlestone have made us a better team compared to last year. <o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
However none of these players appear as if they were bought with the intention of becoming leaders on a field. In previous seasons Spurs had at least bought one player who had a reputation, which garnered respect i.e. Davids and Naybet. Both are experienced campaigners who have played at the highest level at both club and country; their experience and character attributes are priceless on the field. The absence of such attributes has left an indelible mark on both our physical style and psychological mindset. <o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
The form and ability of a number of players has also hindered the club's progress. Players such as Lee Young Pyo and Tainio have not developed sufficiently enough to justify their inclusion in the squad let alone the first-team. Neither seem to be able to influence games or inspire a confidence the way a Gary Neville or Gilberto seem to. Dawson has also been somewhat disappointing in the absence of King's leadership. <o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
Where once I had envisioned a partnership of 'Pallister-Bruce' comparisons, i feel that Dawson is more of a sidekick to King rather than defensive partner. Considering that Dawson is a very good defender and had been club captain at Nottm Forest, I simply expected him to step up to proverbial plate and take up the mantle of defensive martial. To be fair, the problems in our defence should not be left squarely on the shoulders of Dawson, but the whole back four in general; none of our back four seem to express a perception of character or leadership, there doesn't appear to be one player who is prepared to accept any kind of responsibility. <o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
The injuries to a number of key personnel for long periods of the season has not helped our cause, but this should not serve as an excuse for the highly paid professionals on the pitch to perform badly. Put simply there are a certain contingent of players in key positions who have rested on the laurels of last years success and simply have not delivered; for their failure to continue to develop, these players should pay the price for their woeful performances.<o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
My preferred solution to our defensive problem would be to bring in another experienced campaigner into the back four who not only has the required leadership qualities, but will also compete for a place with the other central defenders. My choice would be Roberto Ayala.<o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
Ayala is an outstanding competitor who has played at the highest level for both club and country, and despite his age demonstrated at the 2006 World Cup that he can still perform at the biggest stages by being picked as a member of the World Cup All-Star Team. Ayala represents all the qualities that are absent from our team: he is leader and a winner having captained the Valencia team to two Primera Liga titles and a UEFA cup. His ability and character in the field would prove invaluable to a back four bereft of a leader without Ledley King. Ayala's current situation at the Mestalla offers an opportunity to bring him to pastures new, and grace pitch where fellow countrymen Ardiles and Villa had left such an indelible mark. <o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
At the risk of being a labelled a 'pessimist' (or worse?) I do sincerely believe that the Spurs will indeed turn this situation around and provide a positive end to the season. We are still competing on four fronts and I thoroughly believe that we have every chance of winning the UEFA cup and League Cup, though the return of the King could scarcely come soon enough<o:p></o:p>

I don't quite get the title of your piece. I thought you were going to argue that good as he is, Leders is not a born captain (which I think is obvious). To me we have been captainless for a good few seasons, in terms of a skipper (like Mabs) who is a rock and gets the team off its arse. It's a persistent problem for a lot of teams, not just us. Not easy to solve.

The fact that we're in for Rocha is a testament to the managament's recognition that we need an alternate partner for the King/Daws combo. Gardner's howling error against Fulham shows how brittle we are without another quality CB.

That sentence I dissagree with and has coloured what i may have thought about the rest of the article. Then nothing else in the article made me sit up and say 'I really agree!'.

I must admit that I feel quite strongly about this and do not think that we possess a leader apart from perhaps Davids in our squad.

We really do need someone to rally the troops and get in the players faces when they are not doing their jobs. They don't even have to be the captain to do that. In the past when Steve Perryman was captain it didn't stop Graham Roberts from letting the others know that they were not pulling their weight!

These type of players do not grow on trees, but the truely great ones like in recent times Roy Keane at Utd for example, can make the difference to the whole way the team plays and battles as a unit. They can inspire the team on the pitch and leave the Manager to inspire them off of it.

Sometimes these players don't have to be the most gifted, but have the desire to win games or fight with everything that they have got. At the weekend Fulham with 10 men still took the game to us and they were driven on by an old Spurs boy Michael Brown. He doesn't have the skill and natural ability that many of our current players have, but his drive is infectious on the other players and his team gave what they could. That is why Jol was sad to see him leave.

Surely rather than spending huge amounts of money on players that could be good in the future (Davies & Young) it's time to get a fighter who will push us on when we need it and never give up. It could mean the difference between us winning something and progressing in the league or ending up empty handed again!

Must say I was confused by the title of the piece too! I was prepared for a bit of Ledley bashing or something!

I think it's fairly obvious to all Spurs fans and general Premiership viewers that without Ledley King we are a different team. Dawson looks like a different player when he is alongside King, and our lack of clean sheets this year has been testament to the amount of unrest at the back in terms of a "solid back four".

When everybody is fit and on form we have an awesome team. What we are lacking is high quality cover in certain, well talked about, areas, and some time for our foreign players to really settle in England and Spurs, and gel into a consistent unit.
  5. dontcallme
Good article but some important factors have been missed out. Us with Ledley is the same as Man U without Rio and Chelsea without Terry. All three of us had our forms deteriorating before our eyes as soon as the rocks in defence were out. Unfortunately for Dawson as a result of his very impressive partnership with Ledley he has been over-rated. Dawson is very talented and has huge potential and even been linked with call ups to the England squad but it has been shown that he needs a little more experience yet.

This is not a criticism of Dawson and I believe in 3 seasons time we'll have thhe best CB partnership in the Prem. The signing of Rocha if agreed looks highly beneficial to our squad though.
  6. AJ
Exactly. To suggest that Tainio and Lee haven't done enough to be members of the squad, is ridiculous. Tainio starts every game when he is fit (ahead of Zokora I might add), so it's fairly obvious that Jol values his contribution. And quite rightly so. Lee has played better than Assou-Ekotto this season, so it's unfounded to single him out also.

Why mention only those two, but leave out squad members who have done less "to justify their inclusion in the squad let alone the first-team"? Such as Murphy or Davids, or even Zokora, if you consider his rather large transfer fee.
  7. bigspurs
I think you have got it pretty much spot on here.

Fans who cannot see that Tanio and Lee are weak links in this side, clearly have no idea about football (which makes me worry about our management sometimes)!
  8. alchemission
Your bigger picture is spot on, but in straying from the point by sledging YP Lee and Tainio, for example, you have missed the real solution to the problem...

    ...a string-pulling midfield captain.

The back four is now covered, although you wouldn't have known this at the time of writing. The shortfalls in drive and leadership are in midfield.
  9. michael.thfc
We are disorganised at set pieces and corners scare me to death. Robbo lacks confidence, heads go down and we have no one around to pull the lads together when they need a leader on the field.

Why is that a left back and a left midfielder have NOT been recruited while meanwhile we turn over ten 'average' centre midfielders, of all the ones that we have moved on I don't see much better replacing them, Brown and Davies out and Tainio and Ghaly in.....is that upgrading?

The exception being Huddlestone and Lennon who have come in and made a huge impression which is great BUT I can't help thinking without a real CAPTAIN in the middle, a mature in the trenches (I know this is old hat but a Roy Keane style) Quality player that will organise the team and pick them up kicking and screaming and turn away points like Fulham and Pompey into away wins!

Why are we always two or three players short of challenging for the top four spots....? I can think of several world class players at Spurs that I would not trade at any price, but we do need vital positions filled with quality to round it off and make a challenge for top four! starting with a Captain......WHO could we sign, does anyone have an opinion???????
  10. AJ
Your failure to spell Teemu's surname correctly tells a lot about your expertise in this matter.

Obviously you know more about football in general than Jol, who has earned a very decent living from football for around 30 years now and has earned very high praise as a manager. Also, you, who at most see our players around 90 minutes per week, know more about our players and can judge their contributions to the team better than Jol, who sees all of our players on a daily basis in practice.
  11. dirtydave
    i prefer ekotto to lee.
i prefer malbranque, jenas, hudd, zokora, lennon to tainio
i want an ex international (european) captain or something to sort us out in times of need. imagine a stam, terry, schemichael, kahn, even bryan robson.
i want a young lw and old lb or visa versa.
i want a team of 28 yr old huddlestones too.
  12. dirtydave
looks like we just got Rocha....
  13. worcestersauce
    Keane

Quite a few people have used the example of Roy Keane as the kind of hard working fighter to get the team going, well much as I disliked him I think this does him a bit of an injustice, Roy Keane was not just a fighter he was a great player too so if people are saying we need someone like him we really are doomed because there ain't any more about. I take the point about needing a natural leader on the pitch but these days players just don't reach the top by just being a born leader or a hard nut, unfortunately they've been outlawed. Maybe Terry at Chelsea and Nolan at Bolton are in this mould but Who fills that role at the emirates or at Liverpool or even come to that at Man U now?
As for Tainio and Lee, they aren't great players but they are better than Brown and Edman not to mention atouba.
Our problem is our away form, if we had just won a couple more games we would still have been in with a shout of a CL place and pretty certain of Uefa, it shouldn't have been hard for a team who have been so good at home, perhaps Watford and one other!
It has to be a mental problem surely because we cannot really be that bad, we really do start every away game expecting not to win for some reason.
  14. UbeAstard

And your opinion means you have more idea about football than others who disagree? How silly and narrow minded!!
  15. octavian
We need Joey Barton for 5.5million,and give him the captaincy
  16. Sanj
What everyone is asking for is sitting at the club waiting for a call.

Edgar Davids, whilst not at the peak of his powers still has an infections desire to win, tackle harry etc. Partner him with Hud in the middle. Ask Davids to hold and get hud pushing up further where his passing can be more penetrative and he can get into shooting positions more often.
If Davids can't do 90 mins, he could've come on against the toon and given the experience and leadership required. He could have set the tone for some of our away games actually pushing the team on, rather than waiting to see what happens (usually the other team scoring !).
He is a leader and he would be invaluable to our young team, and even more invaluable in helping hud take his game to the next level.
  17. gloryglory
I don't think it's contradictory to say that:

    - Tainio and Lee are the weakest players in the current first 11 by some distance

    - Tainio and Lee are decent squad players: Tainio was excellent last season and Lee has been our best left back this season.

    - We would be better off with a left footed left back if we could find one of the right quality

    - Tainio does not have as much talent as Zokora or Jenas

Personally I have seen more to impress me in Tainio than in Ghaly, but Ghaly deserves time and Tainio is clearly off form at the moment.
  18. spurs_viola
Finally someone sees the obvious (to me) answer: Edgar Davids. Yes, he may not be as effective for the whole 90 min as he used to be, but if he was given due respect for the hardworking and competitive attitude as well as his vast experience he would still be able to provide the leadership and drive we so sorely lack in the team now.
And this may be an internal problem not talked about much outside WHL: perhaps by being too competitive and demanding of his younger players he has put himself on a collision course with some of them or with Martin Jol himself.
And Jol has probably decided that it is safer for him to alienate aging Davids rather than risk antagonising younger players in his first team. So Davids is not even given a chance to get his place back in the team, while we don't really see a better alternative on the pitch right now. Zokora, Tainio, Ghaly, Jenas, Murphy (all of whom had much more playing time this season than Davids in similar role) have provided none of the competitiveness and drive that Davids can still offer - given at least some support from the management and the team.
And added to the loss of Carrick, the self inflicted loss of Davids seems to me one of the main reasons why we lack positive results this season.
All the narrowminded people who jeer Davids now that he has slightly slowed down and occasionally loses possession (and because he is so distinct and doesn't shy away from the ball, his mistakes are easily noticed) should just pause and think about what Davids brought to the team last season and why is the team so toothless now without him this season?
  19. JoeT
Has anyone out there noticed (and I realize that it did mean reading all of the article before jumping in), that there was a suggested solution to our defensive problems...namely going after Roberto Ayala....and it hints that his "current situation" (whatever that is), means that we may be able to get him. I would be most interested to hear your collective views on this - and I am sure 'greywizard2020' would as well.
