Just announced a few changes to the tournament for next year:

  • No seeding (previously rounds 1 and 2 (before we come in) were seeded, so now we're more likely to see League 1 and 2 sides in the first couple of games we play
  • No extra time except in the final - drawn matches go straight to penalties
  • ABBA penalties scrapped, back to the old ABAB system

I like the removal of seeding but the other changes are a bit of a shame - just makes it more reliant on pot luck. Not clear what they'll do with the semi-final either - hopefully introduce away goals after 90 minutes at least rather than just go straight to penalties for an aggregate draw.

The announcement I was waiting for was scrapping the second leg of the semi. It's a pointless addition to a January that is always jam packed for the teams involved.

Shame about scrapping the ABBA penalties too. I like that system and thought it was here to stay.

Surprised they scrapped the ABBA system, would like to know the reasons behind that.

I think it was a concept that was just far too complicated for simple-minded players and fans alike. People are reluctant to change no matter how much sense it makes.
