Jermain Defoe has told Portsmouth manager Tony Adams that he wants to rejoin Tottenham.

Portsmouth have received verbal offers of between £12-16million from Aston Villa and Spurs for the England striker and the cash-stricken south coast side favoured Villa’s deal.

However, Defoe spoke to Adams yesterday and expressed his determination to link up once again with mentor Harry Redknapp rather than head for Villa Park.

Defoe joined Portsmouth from Spurs last January for £9m and some of the deal is still to be paid.

That would make Villa's straight cash offer more appealing to Portsmouth, who are desperate to alleviate their debts despite selling Lassana Diarra to Real Madrid for £20m.

Villa manager Martin O’Neill yesterday denied making an offer for Defoe, but Redknapp has made no secret of his desire to sign the 26-year-old.

Redknapp was rebuffed in an attempt to sign Craig Bellamy from West Ham, with Manchester City leading that chase, and he fears facing the relegation dogfight without another top-quality striker.

  2. YiddArmy
God i hate the transfer window!!

    Journo checklist:

Which club always has money to spend? Tottenham
Not in the 'big 4', so can link anybody and everyone with them? Tottenham
Big fan base who'll continue to buy papers and believe this rubbish? Tottenham

I'm going to hibernation, see you all in February guys!!

Ah, one of my favourite times of the football season - the January transfer window.

I'd like to think that the truth in this story is directly proportional to the amount of quotes.

Until around one hour ago the best rumour i had heard this window was Pennant goin to Real, now i hear Juande wants to give us 15mil for Jenas... JESUS... sell, sell, sell

I like Defoe but does no one else fancy a change upfront? an for the money being mentioned i defo wouldnt be in hurry to get the cheque book out...

Would love to get Defoe back, should never have sold him in the first place, the price quoted is a bit steep to say the least, but if Real Madrid want to offer us 15m for Jenas, snap their hands off and use to money to buy back Defoe.

I understand that people would want a change up front and not to bring in Defoe however the advantage of JD coming back is that he knows the club and a lot of the players as well as the manager and coaches therefore i think he would settle in a lot quicker, which is something we need.

Buying another £15mill+ player that would be ineligible for UEFA & Carling is a bit extravagant but thats the way THFC do their business....
  9. jolsnogross
It would be great to get Defoe back, but if this is true, he needs his head examined to want to come to us instead of Villa.

You really still interested in the UEFA Cup? Lets be realistic it is fourth priority now. It offers no route back into Europe next year and will take two much effort to win. League, Carling Cup, FA Cup then UEFA is the order, with the later being almost irrelevant if we can win the Carling Cup which we are likely to reach the final of.
  11. Gaz_Gammon
If we get to the Carling final and play Man Ure and end up losing and Man Ure win the Premier do we get into Europe?
  12. The Original Yiddster
nope not unless things have changed....place will go to 6th in PL
  13. jenko
er, NO! place goes to league. If it was the FA cup then answer would be YES. Dunno why....
  14. jenko
uefa cup winners are allowed entry to defend their trophy.

    Another made up story......

actually i think now that neither cup runners get into the new Europa lge (incidentally i believe the inter toto has gone too as a means of qualification)

EDIT - posts crossed with TCO's fuller reply and link

as for priorities i think the FA cup should be 4th priority, the UEFA 3rd

interesting to see what HR does on Fri

I'd go all out for squad/fringe players except perhaps JJ as he's suspended for burnley anyway

however it might be safest to rest him too

I certainly agree that the lge is easily the priority and that any signings shouldn't be influenced by whether people are cup tied or not

it's the lge we have need for urgent reinforcemnets

in the cups we have enough to deal with Burnley if we play to anywhere near our full potential, and for the rest, que sera sera

naturally i hope players we buy can play in some cup game, but that's the proverbial bonus.

we can strenghten our UEFA squad anyway by bringing in the likes of Rocha if necessary

incidentally I'd play RR v wigan on Friday (assuming he's deemed fit enough)

As a point of interest Defoe is not Cup Tied for the Carling Cup....Portsmouth were knocked out by Blackburn n Defoe didnt play. So he could play in that for us.
