I thought FFP was over a 3 year rolling period and Newcastle spent absolutely nothing under Ashley and therefore have quite a bit of room to manoeuvre

I'm getting mixed messages everywhere but came across this -

I think it's a bit of both. Mike Ashley's tight spending controls do mean they have a bit of room to go out and invest in the team. However over the 3 year rolling period they will need to increase revenue to prevent from reporting too big a loss. Champions League is a great start for them but they will have to keep it up as despite a large ground I don't think matchday takings are huge. They'll need to sell lots of shifts, sponsorships and runs in Europe to keep it up.

Similar to Everton and Leicester they invested heavily in the squad but didn't progress the commercial side off the pitch or have any sustained success on it.

This is why Levy (positive post alert) put so much priority on the commercial side of things. The state of some of the on field and recruitment decisions in the last 3 years could of been absolutely devastating without it.
