He can't expect Leicester to accept a bid they believe is below his value without having time to find a replacement. Also none of that is an excuse for going awol from training before your team play a match. Four days running he hasn't turned up.

Agree - If City had come in at the start of the window, with a reasonable offer, I think Leicester would have let him go.
However, they had no interest in him until Sane got injured, and then only moved for him on the final day of the window, when Leicester had no potential replacement. If Ulloa hadn't already been shipped out, maybe they would have done a deal, but he had already gone.

As Mahrez is a French born Algerian maybe this is another example of the 'African' thing I keep hearing about ?

Funny how that dude from West Ham got suspended for saying that on the same day that West Ham tried to sign Slimani.

Not on the last day of the window with 10 hours to go you don't. He had plenty of time to move in the summer and January as well. You can't sign a contract for x amount of years doubling your wage and then demand to be sold at the last minute of the window, seeing as Leicester need time to get a replacement in, they weren't afforded that time which is why they put a high value on him.

Also explains why they were looking for a player as part of the deal.

Fined £200k for missing training apparently.

What was it Puel said the other day? Something about the club helping him to come back to training with a smile wasn't it? I don't think the fine is going to help with that.

City seem hell bent on causing as much disruption to rivals as possible.

They are a malignancy.

Has now taken to the media: (EDIT: Noticed it is from 1 feb, but anyways)

And that has led to an unhappy Mahrez making a statement through a friend expressing his 'depression' at events of the last couple of days.

The friend said: "Riyad is very depressed this evening over the events of the last two days. He doesn't understand why Leicester have behaved in the way they have.
"This is the fourth transfer window in which Leicester have said they will allow him to leave. He feels very strongly that he has done everything in his powers for the club.
"He played a huge part in Leicester's promotion in his first season. He then helped them make history in winning the Premier League title and he has done what the chairman has asked of him, which is to stay at the King Power and secure the club's Premier League safety.

"They have let N'Golo Kante and Danny Drinkwater go. He would have been the record sale in the history of the club and the record purchase for Manchester City. By my calculations, Leicester would have made £59.8m profit on the player they bought from Le Havre for £350,000.
"He's been told by many of his former team-mates that, to get out of Leicester, you have to go to war, which he has tried to avoid. He's given his all for Leicester this season so that he could leave in this window.
"Joining Manchester City would have been a dream for him. Playing for Pep Guardiola is something he is still desperate to do. That seems a long way off right now. He's very down about how he's been treated by a club he has served so well."

He'll find out how much they really want him when Sane is fit again by the summer.

I am a little uneasy with footballer contracts. In most jobs you can give a month's notice and work for whoever you please.

I think there is something wrong with a system that allows a company to hold a registration for a 17 year old for 4 years.

Mahrez was very hot property in 2016 after their PL win. He signed a new contract bringing his wage to £100k. He happily took the pay rise when surely he could have gone to a better club for similar or more money.

In this case he made an incorrect decision and is now living with the consequences.

Football is very different in that every player is very much in the public eye and the good ones will be head hunted. Industry relies more on word of mouth to target recruits. Clubs are generally at ease with this since it is a major revenue stream and some clubs survive on it. Holding the registration of young players in many ways help smaller clubs to at least recoup the development costs of young players. We all know that the contracts aren't really worth the paper they're written on and players/agents have plenty of power too.

I understand that but it doesn't make it right.

I don't think it is right for any company in any industry to hold a registration on a teenager for such a long period of time. How much you pay him does not change this moral point.

Maybe, but there are some industries where if you leave, you are expected to repay a proportion of your training costs (e.g. HGV drivers). Clubs need a bit of security when they're bringing youngsters through and it also shows a level of commitment on both sides.

I agree it is a minefield.

If young players can be developed then just leave the result will be clubs are less likely to put time, effort and resources into developing youth.

On the other side if a young kid grows up in a small town with a league two team and dreams of playing as a professional footballer he is likely to play for that club to enhance his chances of going pro.

In my view it is not right for him then as an adult to be "owned" by that club and not allowed to go to the club of his dreams if his current club want extortionate money.

There is no easy answer but I maintain my view that "owning" a player for such a long period is not morally right.

But in this particular case Mahrez signed a long contract for much more money when he was hot property and in his prime. He has created this situation himself.

Awwwwww Mahrez is depressed because he isnt going to be able to play on Man City’s bench for a month until Sane gets back and Bernardo moves back to the bench? Boo fucking hoo. Chris almighty. You’re that desperate to leave that you want to go somewhere where you wont be playing?

It's not comparable, imo.

When you sign a contract at a company, there's no stipulation for how long that is expected to be for (unless it's a short term one or FTC). Footballers sign for 100s of grands a month, with hefty signing fees - obviously they can't just put their notice in.

I think that’s his point though. He’s missed another chance to go to a big club. I guess he shouldn’t have signed a new contract with Leicester then though if he intended to just ship so soon

Seems to happen a lot where a player seems destined to leave but then signs a bumper deal at their club. A few months later they're moaning and bitching at not being allowed to leave. IMO, agents talk them into all sorts of situations that aren't right for the player but make the agent a load of cash in the short term. I'd like to see more players fire their agent when this happens.

If you read my next post you'd see I acknowledge that and have not asked for it to be changed.

I've merely said that I am uneasy with any company in any industry holding a work contract over a human being for such a long period of time, especially a teenager. The amount of money involved does not change a moral standpoint.
