Nah it got them before others could come in more than anything. Coutinho was a January deal... Mane' early May i think.. Salah talk or leaks/tapping up started in April if im not mistaken.
If Saints thought they could get more than £75m for VVD or what was deemed a very high price for Mane at the time they would have waited for other offers.

No point in waiting around when you have already been offered what is obviously going to be the highest bid.

Tapping up has nothing to do with the selling price.

I'm not convinced personally...if their business was so good how comes they still have glaring holes in their team they haven't addressed yet? It took Poch 3/4 transfer windows to sort us out, it's taken Kloop 5 and they still have holes at LB and GK.
Shady....He started a full year after Poch give him time.

We would do well to follow their lead. Especially this season and particularly as it is a world cup year and all it's complications.

But it is the overpaying for players that allows for quick and early deals.
Exactly, yet weirdly he thinks that approach should be applauded.

He let his guard slip when he wrote 'This season i think we stood still'
This is what's driving all his comments over the last few days, it's got nothing to do with Liverpool, it's to do with us.

Mane' was a brilliant price £38 Million or so. Deal done and sealed early. Negotiations started in March/April which is what i would like us to do.

Like when we signed Modric/Vertonghen etc. Vertonghen broke in like March April but done somewhere in Hune/ July.. Memory fading on that one. But thats the gist of it. Get business done early !!!

Time? Like I said Poch did it in 3, Kloop is still having to fix holes and he's on his 5th, that wasn't my point anyway, it was in regards to you praising their business and its taken them much longer to address it, that's not more impressive than what Poch did however you want to dress it up.

So what you're suggesting to 'follow their lead' is that we overspend and pay massively high wages to compensate for our best player leaving the club?

The only thing that should be applauded is he is getting many of the signings right.

Mane and Salah were questioned by some at the time but they have both been excellent signings. I personally think VVD is an excellent defender. While he won't be worthy of a world record fee he is going to do well for them in my view. Not to say there haven't been a few flops of course.

But to think the inflated fees they are paying for these players has no bearing on getting the deal done early is simply embarrassing.

Well for starters it seems oddly timed praising their business since you're doing it in the wake of the VVD transfer which the jury is still out for.

As for their current approach, it's not bad by any stretch. It's also really not much to write home about. I really don't see anything particularly special that they're doing. Nothing really praise worthy. Yes they've got some great players in like Mane and Salah etc... but others clubs have got other players in that have worked for them (all of Man City's buys etc...).

In terms of doing business early kinda, everyone tries to get business done early but unless you're willing to pay a premium it won't happen early. Liverpool didn't get all their players in early. Not all have hit the ground running etc...
Also Liverpool pay some fairly high wages (that's what took us out of the running for Mane IIRC) so that helps them get players in and it also depends what players they're going for. For whatever reason many other clubs weren't that bothered by Salah seemingly so that made it easier.

So I say again, I really don't see what the big deal is. They've made some pretty good transfers. Yes. As have other teams. Liverpool also have some pretty big weaknesses in their squad that haven't been addressed for years.
Okay i respect you view... I still like how and who they identified and yes they have weaknesses but smacked us with their weaknesses foe the last 4-5 swasons. So a lot of what some of you are using as a stick to beat them with is said with Spurs blinkers.

We matched price on Mane, he chose them because they offered more than double what we offered. 135k a week

Mane was certainly not a brilliant price. He was not that highly rated at the time and the fee was extremely high which is why they could get him unopposed.

Modric and Vertonghen were bought from leagues where the fee is lower and we paid a fair price for them.

We would love to get players in early. But we are looking for high quality. We could go down the Liverpool route and massively over pay, embarrassing that you don't think they have, but we have been more successful than Liverpool doing business our way.

No... Mane' was not an overpriced player.. Definitely not. 2 seasons prior we paid 30 Million for Lamela or was it 26 million.
Oh Mane was already smoking hot at Southampton.

You think Mane was more highly rated in world football than Lamela?

A signing turning out to be good doesn't mean the fee wasn't high.

It's like saying if we'd bought Alli for £20m it was a good price because he has done well despite us being able to get him for cheaper.

....... includes Coutino (who was bought ages before Klopp arrived), and conveniently ignores the £60m+ they spent on Wijnaldum and Chamberlain.......if Coutino goes to Barca this window then they'll be back down in 6th/7th.

What they have done reasonably well, is sold a load of old shite for good money, which has gone some way to balancing the books.

It's alright keep banging the Liverpool are great doing their business early drum. That they identify an area of weakness and go out and address the problem.

Last two seasons have seen them pocket £124.1 million and £134.1 million

Yep, £258.2 million, a quarter billion more.

The big hitters like UTD and City only rush their buying if there is a threat to the deal, otherwise they just sit back and blow everyone else aside with mega wages on offer usually good enough to get the deal done.

It's been said no others were in for VVD, so why all the cum fest because they signed a CB.

Whoopy feckin do.

Quarter of a billion more than us over 2 seasons, higher wage ceiling. We might pay the premium early if we were in the same bracket.

Let's concentrate on our team as opposed to praising a team for buying a CB early and a player who will join next season.

If this is somewhat a struggle, have a cheeky smirk and remind yourself how little we paid for Alli.

Now that's what you call feckin business.
