It gets said again and again on here. Some people won't accept it. They see someone that can run fast and score and think it's the answer to our troubles at breaking down teams that sit back.

But teams are sitting back against Man City and they can't handle thier pace.

Teams have sat back against Liverpool and Salah and Mane have caused them problems with their pace.

I'm not saying pace is a guaranteed answer but it can certainly help.

It’s mainly just people looking for possible gaps in our squad. An alternative to our options. If we had a Darren Bent style striker plenty of people would bemoan our lack of a good hold-up player who is strong in the air.

There was a brief period where we had Lennon and Bale on the flanks (though they didn’t play together all that much, in reality) and suited our counter attack style. As soon as clubs started sitting back against us more often, Lennon became next to useless and Bale got moved into a roaming number 10 slot to make the most of his other abilities.

We want (not necessarily need) a player that most clubs on the planet would want; someone who can run at players in the final third and beat them. Obviously there aren’t many Messi’s available on the market.

Exactly What we really need is someone who can beat a man rather than just someone who has pace. Obviously even better would be someone who is skillful enough to beat their man but is also lightening quick, but as you say, those sort of players don't grow on trees and the ones that exist are well out of our price range unless we unearth some hidden gem. A player with just raw pace like Salah wouldn't improve us much IMO as pace and pace alone is not the answer to our problems.

That's the thing though, they haven't necessarily. Generally speaking under Klopp Liverpool have had the most success against the better teams who come at them and struggled most against the weaker teams who sit back. Obviously there are exceptions to both of those but by and large that has been the trend.

As for City that's different because they have an unrealistic super-squad that a club that isn't funded by dodgy money is never going to be able to put together. Also I don't think they rely on pace, they have quick players but those players are also very skillful, which is a deadly combination, especially when combined with people who can thread a pass through. They just have everything so aren't really a fair comparison.

I think it’s the main reason behind the clamour for Edwards to play. In a few amateur videos and youth reports he sounds and looks exactly like the sort of player you describe; quick, tricky, and can dribble past a player. In his one cameo for the first team against Gillingham he did all of the above and almost scored to boot.

I think this is where idealistic optimism (not from you, but some others) kicked in. I can understand it to an extent because on paper he seems like the kind of player who could mix things up, but I think Pochettino might have a better understanding of his readiness than me or the Edwards fanboys!

Agree he's more the kind of player we need but like you say, if he was ready then I'm sure Poch would throw him in. He's already shown that he's not afraid to give the kids a chance if he thinks they're ready so clearly he doesn't think Edwards is at that level yet. There have been rumours for ages about Edwards having a bit of an attitude as well so maybe that's been holding back his development and he hasn't yet progressed to a level where Poch thinks he can trust him.

Not saying you’re wrong but what’s gkn shown to say he can be trusted?

Nothing, that's why he almost never gets to play :D

In fairness that's also not really a good comparison because he's not a kid, he's been playing competitive first team football for several years whereas Edwards is a kid just coming out of the academy.

Eh, teams have sat back against City and can't handle their skill and passing.

Teams have sat back against Liverpool and walked off with three points time and again.

Eh, teams are getting points of Liverpool due to their terrible defending. Every team is struggling with the pace of Mane and Salah.

Also don't see how anyone can deny Sane's and Jesus's pace isn't part of City being clincical.

Apart from the games where they have shitloads of chances and fail to score? Suggests craft is at least as important as pace. We have a skewed view of them due to often getting done by a fast runner, and even their goal against us the other week was textbook, good ball and a straight foot race. Yet they're not exactly free scoring at the moment.

In a bizarre twist of fate, Simply Red frontman Mick Hucknall has become the Liverpool physio. Upon hearing the news that his Senegalese talisman has injured himself on international duty and returned to the club, Jurgen Klopp rushes in to Mick's office and asks:

"How is his hamstring?"

To which Mick replies

"Mane's? Too tight to mention"

:sorry:

Heard on the radio last night that Clyne has had surgery on his back so he's out for at least another 3 months. Big loss for them

Yip, he was the next Kyle Walker-Roberto Carlos-Marcelo-Maldini apparently. TBH he is a good WB & they will miss him. Who is their back up WB?
