The problem I struggle with is that people like Carragher are TV sports figures and not everyday people. They earn their high salaries by living in the public spotlight and as such are expected to behave with a little bit more decorum in such circumstances. You simply cannot have it both ways...if he wants people to listen to his opinion and respect his views then when the cameras switch off he is not allowed to.

Whenever these celebrities are out in public there is a certain code of practice they should follow. They give up the right to anonymity the day they sign a professional contract with a football club, TV company or any other such corporation. When that guy 'intimidated' him with a chant of 2-1 he should have simply waved, smiled, wound the window up and then called him whatever he wanted to under his breath.

Not for one second did it enter his mind how spitting at someone would affect his career and the people/family around him....it also strongly suggests he has done this type of thing before when provoked. He carries a responsibility around with him to behave in a manner suited to someone who has millions of people watching him on Sky...he has shown scant regard for it and in my opinion should resign.

That again is only my perspective and I too don't have any problem with people having alternate views.

How many people have ever spat at someone? It's a really weird and extreme thing to do, teenage girl or no teenage girl. If he'd been caught on vid telling some guy whose hassling him to Fuck Off, that'd be within normal boundaries. But spitting ain't that.

I note Carragher is getting support on Twitter from establishment types like Gary Neville, Michael Vaughan and Piers Morgan. My hunch is that he'll survive, but I'm not at all convinced he should.

Always felt he was pretty dense and whilst you could view this as a moment of madness it tells me he's a bit of an idiot. I'm sure this happens plenty of times to many player (see the Son/West Ham fan incident) yet very few respond like this.

Regardless of any provocation, just get your window up and drive on. A quick fuck off would have been fine as well but he's resorted to a form of response which is one step up from monkeys flinging their shit.

If he'd utilised the brain he had, he'd still have a job and this wouldn't be in all over the media.

I just watched the whole interview. I mean, it’s funny because he’s done something pretty vile and been suitably embarrassed because of it but I didn’t like the style of the Sky news presenter. She did her best to make him quit Sky on live tv.

She read out tweets from Joey Barton and Vinny Jones - blatantly trying to get a reaction from him like ‘well they can talk’. But he handled it quite well. When you end up feeling more sorry for the interviewee in an interview like this, then something isn’t right. Another Kay Burley wannabe.

In my opinion, it’s quite harsh that someone could lose their livelihood over this. Maybe he should be suspended for this season on no pay and possibly given a chance next year. He’s made a massive fuck up but it’s the first (proper one) in his 25 years of being in the public eye. However, I think he actually will be sacked because a) it’s vile, no getting away from it and b) that interview has mugged him off and won’t be forgotten in a hurry, but everyone with good previous deserves a second chance (depending on the crime of course....). And although what he did was disgusting and completely OTT, it was still someone else who started it. It’s not like he did it for no reason. Not excusing him obviously but there’s context for everything. Barton stubbing cigars out in player’s eyes and Vinny Jones assaulting people week in week out on the pitch is much worse and without goading. ITV and Republic of Ireland hire Roy Keane and he’s admitted to wanting to, and ending, someone’s career. Cantona kicking someone in the crowd - goaded and reacted, banned for 9 months. That’s about right.

The other driver should be punished for his part too.

It's an interesting view. One I personally disagree with.

Sorry to take this a little off-tangent here but I remember watching Steve Coogan talking at the Leveson trial. He talked about how he felt he was a talented entertainer and lived within the law but not a role-model. He spoke about his adultery and how the press hounded him so much he stopped wanting to entertain. Damn shame, as he is very talented.

I know that is slightly off topic but I think the point stands with footballers. I want good pundits to give good insights into tactics, analyse the actions of the game and a look into a player's mindset.

I don't really see them as role-models and wouldn't hold them to the same moral standards as a politican.

There is of course a line to their behaviour and can be punished for stepping out of line. This is a tricky case as spitting is disgusting. But I believe him when he says he didn't see the girl and he was provoked. So a punishment but not firing is approriate in this case.

What do you think is more common: a person using there phone whilst driving or a sky sports pundit spitting in a girls face?

It isn't a case of whataboutisms, as they are both wrong. The driver should get 6 points and a fine, Carragher should get sacked.

I don't disagree, that Carragher should face some sort of consequences as it's disgusting, although I have never known anyone to be killed by being spat at.

Spitting is disgusting and there is just no excuse for it.

Especially if it was at a 14 year old girl, no matter what the verbal provocation.

He should be fired.

If he’d have just mouthed obscenities back a suspension / final warning would have been enough but spitting is a big no no.

Too easy in this country otherwise to do something really stupid then remorsefully apologise afterwards.
I honestly don't think he saw the girl or was she in his eye sight of rage.
If he apologised immediately after, it could tell you that he realised that the girl was there after he spat.

Quick check of the PC flow chart...
Q: Were the spat upon family white and British?
A: Yes, it appears so.

"OK Jamie, quick suspension and back to work mate."

Seriously folks, imagine if the girl was black or wearing a hijab, this discussion wouldn't be happening he'd have been sacked immediately. Get on with it Sky.

Still shouldn’t have spat though.

Spitting is just plain wrong.

Seriously bringing race into this?

Probably start whining about how a foreigner will likely take his job.

Oh I agree entirely about that. Doesn't make it right. It's just the way the media are dressing it up like he spat directly in the girls face

Maybe double standards? Just can't believe some people are condoning this when if the scenarios I'd mentioned had happened he would have been sacked.

What double standards? You are coming off like a Britain First nutjob bringing race into a subject where it has no relevance.

Irrelevant.

The "family spat upon" were an innocent 14 yr old girl and her dickhead of a father who put her at risk, by shouting out the window and filming it on his phone whilst driving, much more than any fragment of spit that may have landed on her.

If it had been a racist attack by a Sky presenter then that's a different thing altogether.
