I hope England wins - because, why not?

But, I'll just say this - IF England lose, I hope its because Hendo fucked up...

Last night's match was mental - such an emotional roller coaster. I can't remember the last time I shouted at the TV watching football quite as much as I did last night. Not a great game of football but full of incident.

The boys came through in the end. A massive confidence boost and team spirit must be over flowing now.

So pleased for the team and also brimming with pride for the Spurs boys...I'm hoping they bring that winning mentality, grit and determination into the champions league and cup matches next season.

So excited for Saturday...so don't want to go to the wedding me and the Mrs are going to :(
Mrs B booked tickets for TringFest a couple of months ago, I feel your pain....

Your first sentence is a wrong assumption, based on nothing I've actually written. Your second is redundant.

It's a world cup. People can support whomever they want. What I don't get is someone who says they're rooting for England, but then is also rooting for one of their players to fail at the potential expense of the team. It just means you're not actually rooting for the team. That's what made no sense with regard to the poster I was responding to.

I read your earlier post about your own personal views re support for England, and I fully respect it. I have plenty of family and friends that feel the same way as you. There's no confusion with your personal view re where you're coming from as opposed to someone saying, "I'm rooting for England, but I want Henderson to miss his penalty!" That still makes no sense to me.
@ohtottenham! I hear you. I misunderstood the original conversation. I agree, now it doesnt make sense.

The only time Tottenham have come into my mind is when I've prayed one of our players doesn't fuck up and obviously that they score.

Ive seen a few comments from liverpool fans that they are scouse and not English. Whats all that about. Its fucking weird. I mean, if it was possible to cut that city away from our country i would be happy enough but we cant so its all a bit strange.

Been a 'thing' for ages...think it goes back to Thatcher's time in power.

Mid 1960's - Alf Garnet hated his daughter's boyfriend - The Randy Scouse Git, a leftie Labour supporting character (played by Anthony Booth)

That's my earliest recollection of the term 'Scouse' in that respect.

To be fair, I'm English & Spurs supporting but don't really give a flying toss about the national side. Prior to this world cup I'd not watched an England game in years, whereas I've not missed a Spurs game in ages. Even now, I'm only really watching England due to the amount of Spurs players in the team, otherwise I wouldn't give a shit. For me it's club over country every single time to the point where if FIFA killed international football tomorrow, I'd laugh and then piss happily on its grave.

I can't stand Liverpool and their fans as much as most people.

Henderson wasn't playing for Liverpool last night, he was playing for England.

Had this exact discussion with two Arsenal fans I watched the game with, and all agree when it comes to England, forget club football, you support the team. That's what the players have been doing and it shows. Spain became world champions when they put the Barca/Real rivalry behind them

Small minded immature mentality to want him to miss.

Not small minded at all, it's all about Spurs. Thats all some of us care about, hope Jordan Henderson has a mare.

We'll have to agree to disagree there then because I don't understand how you can't wish for your country to do well in sport, unless there is a very good reason.

I don't particularly like long distance running (doing or watching) but i loved Mo Farah winning in 2012.

You've been far too polite there, it's fucking stupid if you support your national team but want a rival player to play bad, the likelihood that if said player plays bad then the team don't win, ever thought of that.

Henderson's was closer to the post but in a good height for the keeper and Ospina made a very good save. Dier's was low and low shots can be harder to get to if they're struck hard enough.

But regardless of the merits of each strike, one was saved and the other went in. That's all that counts.

Plus, On placement, Henderson is unlucky it was saved. However it was a) a proper side foot which is always dangerous and b) there's a reason the keeper is across that far to make the save - JH opened his body up to put it in that corner and it was so telegraphed that it allowed the keeper to go early.

So, in conclusion, Scousers, it was a shit penalty.

Every time he kicks the ball anywhere other than sideways or backwards it is either weighted for a goal kick / throw in or so telegraphed you may as well just pass to the defender.
