Luckily they have not been miles ahead of us on the pitch, you know where football is played.

Infact I seem to remember a Spurs team who were basically playing away all season finishing above them last season.

We even played Sissoko in some of those matches.

Seriously, preparation and player acquisitions? Does this give them a 3 goal lead when we play them? I must be missing something.

I think they are again being over rated as a team, I still feel their defence is their major weakness, It improved a lot last season on the previous but I thought defensively last year we were awful.

I should be clearer:

- Their player purchases in the recent past have been miles better than anyone's, let alone ours
- As such they have caught up massively on the lead we had previously
- Their pre-season preparations, with some good new additions, brought on board in a timely manner, have enabled them to have a proper pre-season
- They go into this new season with what feels like a lot of momentum
- Their performance vs. West Ham was impressive, irrespective of how bad West Ham may have been
- Ours against Newcastle was poor, even though we got the result

It feels like their trajectory has been upward, fairly steeply in fact, whereas ours has been flat. Frankly I think the general (not uniformly, but general) performance level of the team is worse now than we were in the majority of the run in two years back.

I don't think much of that is particularly controversial.

Do you remember when we played Roma in a preseason game and we won 5-1, it was the final game before the start of that season?

The optimism, the euphoria, we were ready, we had spent, we had star signings... What happened?

Optimism, positivity and those types of things mean next to nothing.

When will I worry about Liverpool? When it's after a CL game and they play a tough home game against a difficult low end opposition and grind out a win.

Spurs didn't win pretty, but considering the WC, the lack of preseason and a tough opposition, I would say it was a fantastic win. See, I now have faith that Spurs can grind wins out, I don't think Liverpool have that ability or not as consistently as Spurs.

I'd be worried about their Gk as well.

It's not just about the personnel, it's the way they play.

Although I won't be writing them completely off, they won't win the league.

There's a video of a bunch of kids trying to get Salah to wind his window down and give them an autograph. He barely acknowledges them, types some stuff on his phone and drives off.

Fair enough. A footballer's entitled to his privacy and can't be expected to stop on a dual carriageway to sign various bits of tat. But then...

:D

Not only did Mo help Liverpool earn 3 points at the weekend, but he's likely to have earned himself an extra 6 into the bargain.

Still, if he's good enough for you
Then he's good enough for me

No, I'd agree they're unlikely to win the league, but you'd be hard pressed to find many impartial observers who think we'll finish above Liverpool this year.

If we'd strengthened CM we'd be having a different conversation, but we look short of genuine quality that we can rely on being fit there.

A fit and firing group of Winks, Dembele, Wanyama etc. is great, but it's not looking great right now

It's a pity really that their fans including the entire media are such horrid ****
Otherwise I'd rather enjoy that club for the football they play

It's going to be tough to stay ahead of Liverpool this year. Maybe they are short one center back, but every other position looks great for them. And the approach is so aggressively attacking that they can cover up the odd blip at the back. We really need Moura to contribute at Sonny's level, and we need Winks to get fit and firing again. There's no reason we can't go on long runs of victories, but it is less assured than Liverpool's emerging ability to swat away lower league sides.

They’ve already got more points than we had after 8 matches...

As much as I want to doubt them, I think they'll finish well clear of whoever comes in 3rd. I'd be surprised if they get less than 85 points.

Press are going after Salah today.
United fan shared a video online of him texting while in his car.
He wasn't even moving - stationary traffic. Granted, you're still not supposed to text, but this is just as bad as someone videoing Carragher while goading him, then sharing the (disgusting) reaction.

Thought the behaviour of the fans looking for a selfie was pretty stupid. No defence of what Salah did though.

I wonder if this incident will bring the fans and Merseyside as a whole, together. Will they stop buying mobile phones or maybe even cars in protest? Some would say the majority of them haven’t paid for a phone or car for years anyway. Nevertheless, I expect to see thousands of pro Salah t-shirts with BAN NOKIA’S on the back (Liverpool are 20 years behind the rest of the UK)

Think people in here are sadly underestimating Liverpool.

It's not just Keita who will add a new level to their midfield, but the fact they actually have a pretty decent goalkeeper for the first time since Reina left.

Also, their options in defence they do actually have good options now.

They have Clyne back to compete with Alexander-Arnold at right back, the excellent Roberton at left back (who I wanted Spurs to get from Hull), with Moreno as back up or Milner in emergency.

And at centre back they have Matip and Gomez back, both pretty decent players and would like to see Gomez break through for England (if Klopp has any sense they'll play over Lovren).

Hate to say it as I REALLY don't like Liverpool and two of my mates support them so gonna get so much smugness from them, but it's true they have an excellent squad now.

We may possibly be able to compete with them still, but a few of our long-term injury players (like Wanyama and Rose) need to show they can reach levels they had pre-injury and one of our best midfielders, Dembele, has to be managed very carefully now. And Winks is also worryingly injury-prone at the moment, and we REALLY need him back.

They do have an easy start to the season, which will give them some momentum. That wont be good. Had they a tougher start then I'd be happier.
