Headless Holtby runs a lot. Tell us something new. :playful:

Crucial game right now with Stuttgart for relegation relevance, and he's played very well. He just made an impressive goal line save on a corner.

And Maxim buries Hamburg with great composure in the box to slot in the easy assist. Really think he'd be an excellent option to provide competition for Eriksen as well as provide another wide alternative.

Hamburg lost. I think there's a very real chance of him choosing to stay with Spurs as a result of only picking up one point against two fellow relegation scrappers in the last few days.

I hope he does. Could be a good squad player for us.

It wouldn't be awful to sell off Dembele, Paulinho and Capoue and bring back Holtby simply to give us some numbers in midfield. Doesn't take anything from the available transfer funds and the money from the aforementioned 3 being sold could really go a long ways to acquiring a real good player (Schneiderlin?).

Is he quick enough and does he provide enough width when wide?

No. If we're looking for specifically wide options, I'll certainly concede we should look elsewhere. He's a quick player of course, but he doesn't have that sheering pace we're lacking. Also, if Poch thinks Winks or Onomah are close to being ready, that would also negate any purpose for bringing him in.

If we sold Dembele, Paulinho and Capoue and bough Schneiderlin, we wouldn't need another CM imo, we would have Schneiderlin, Bentaleb, Mason, Stambouli with Veljkovic, Wink and Onomah backing them up.

Winks and Onomah would be for the CM 2 rather than AM, but at the moment, we have Eriksen, Kane and Lamela who can play in the AM and, when he is back from loan, we will have Pritchard who can play there too. For the attacking 3, I would rather we went for a fast winger and fast wide forward.

Agreed on the necessity for pace, wholeheartedly. Top priority criteria IMO.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was of the impression Onomah was best suited to the CAM role?

Pritch would certainly be blocked by Maxim though as they would be the same kind of player for the exact same positions.

All that aside, big fan myself of Maxim's. Still think it incredible how well and quickly he slotted into the Bundesliga.

One thing I noticed in pre-season was that Holtby was surprisingly good playing in from the right. I would bring him back as an option at RW just to give us another option. IMO Lamela at RW just isn't working.

He has played both CM & AM for the academy, but he only really played AM for the U21's due to lack of options and being the most competent in attack out of the CM's. Cebellos was playing AML due to Oduwa being injured and hen he came back, Cebellos played AM for a game or 2 with Onomah dropping into the CM 2, then Cebellos refused to sign a contract extension and was dropped, so Onomah went back to AM.

All my just my opinion of course, but I see him as a CM long term.

Yeah, but I wouldn't be surprised if Holtby was brought back to function as a depth option for not just a Central Midfield position but in a more advanced role behind the striker. Hamburg's season is looking like a complete shitshow, so maybe Holtby would want to return (should we want him back) in January. It'd give us another option to play in behind the striker as well as in midfield and if we're shifting off guys like Paulinho and Dembele, who have found match minutes in positions that Holtby could cover, maybe it makes sense in a money saving but not quite a decrease in production move.

That being said, I really have no idea how Holtby and our club is looking at his current situation. Perhaps Holtby is only really focused on match minutes at this time and he'll stick it out with Hamburg. Or, maybe he's over it and looking for a way back to us and perhaps Pochettino might think of him as an upgrade to his current options.

I guess time will tell, but I think you could make a strong case for either decision.

You make a good point, but I think he will struggle even more to get in the AM position. Personally, I think we need to bring in a pacey wide forward (that can play striker) and a pacey winger than can stretch a defence and with Eriksen, Kane and Lamela being able to play in the AM position, he would find himself far down the pecking order.

I've always got the impression that Paulinho and Capoue (since he was dropped) have just got game time because they are there rotting on the bench, rather than because Poch thinks they are a good option and I wouldn't be surprised if he would rather give that time to academy players. Also, look how little game time Stambouli has had and I think he would be ahead of Holtby if he came back.

Do we have a recall clause in his loan contract?

I would like him to take Benteleb place while he is off at ACN.
