From the BBC:

Liverpool rejected cash-strapped Luton's request to forgo their share of the gate receipts for Sunday's FA Cup third round tie. Luton, who are in administration, could go out of business on Monday. (Various)

Heartless or business?

a bit of both, a sad reflection on footie these days, the gap is just too big for lower league teams.

I'm an advocate of a high rate FA tax on Prem clubs which should result in a redistribution of some wealth.

I think this is very sad.

So much for the football community, it may well be business but the sheckles available as Liverpools part of these gate receipts are all but irrelevant to them.

Next we'll be listening to bullshit coming out of Liverpool like and FA mouths complaining about the lack of young English players coming through whilst they stand greedily by and watch a breeder go to the wall.

Modern day football is a very very sad greedy world.

The money Liverpool will get from the game will cover Steven Gerrard's wages this week, or, if they let Luton keep it, Luton could pay their entire squad...

I know Liverpool have no obligation to help out another team, but come on, it's not like they're counting the pennies...

Here's hoping Luton can cause an upset...

The Prem teams would never stand for it, and they have all the power.

FA: Yes, hello, we're going to tax a large chunk of your money to give to lower league clubs.

PL: Fair enough, and we're going to break away and form our own league. And we won't be playing in the FA Cup. Oh, and our players won't be released for England internationals.

I've just dug this out from the FA Cup rules which explains how the gate money is divvied.

(iii) In matches played in the Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Rounds of the Competition Proper, the net gate receipts of each match shall be divided as follows:

45% to each Club competing in the match.

10% to the Pool.

(No, that doesn't mean Liverpool cop for 55% )

(c) "The Pool" shall be a fund held by The Association which shall be divided at the completion of the Competition amongst all FA Premier League and Football League Clubs which participated in the Competition. The 5% payment to The Association for replayed matches in the First, Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Rounds of the Competition Proper shall be divided at the completion of the Competition amongst all the Clubs outside the FA Premier League and The Football League playing in the First Round of the Competition Proper.

If Liverpool are going to give away 45% of their gate receipt then they should give it a leukemia charity or somehting like that. It isn't a kids fault if theya re dying of cancer, but a football clubs finincial mismanagement is their own fault. i have sympathy for Luton and their unpaid players and fans, but just because they are a football club doesn't mean other football clubs should be charitable towards them. If Liverpool or any other Prem club are in the mood for giving a days gate reciepts away, there will always be many far more deserving recepients than another football club with financial problems.

but a football clubs finincial mismanagement is their own fault.

But most of these financial problems wouldn't have come around if it weren't for the contract between the Football League and ITV Digital.

The collapse of ITV Digital meant that the clubs didn't get any TV rights money for two seasons. I think 30 clubs went into receivership because it.

It's unfair that clubs like Rotherham, Wrexham, Luton, etc., are getting punished for something about of their control. A lot of lower league teams can't rely on their fan support because in recent years the glory supporters have increased in number taking supporters away from them.

Also the whole FA investigation and charges on Luton are a joke simply because Premier League teams do far worse and get away with it.

I don't think how the financial problems came about is that important. I have sympathy for them, but if i was Liverpool (or any prem club) i'd have an issue with givng a donation (which is essentially what this is) to a cause like this. At the end of the day this is an appeal to save a business from going into administration and that to me isn't the greatest way to give away money. It all comes down to opinion, but personally if i was a football club chairman and was about to write out a charitable cheque to save another football club, i'd feel a bit guilty. It would just seem wrong to me. Liverpool shouldn't have to give anything and I think they are right no to, but if they are going to give money away, personally I'd give it to a different cause.

Nowt wrong with what Pool are doing as such, but they could have compromised a little, agreeing to take the cash at a later time or something. Not as if they really need it.

Then again football clubs or indeed their boards are culpable for them being in the shit and they really shouldn't expect other clubs to help them out the khyber.

How do you know that they dont give a considerable amount to those sorts of causes as well? This is a football matter and so it could easily be argued that it should stay in football-all of the major clubs give huge sums of money to helping the community so to compare the two issues is wrong.
