Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has apologised “wholeheartedly” after being charged with drink driving.

The World Cup winner was charged following a routine patrol stop in the early hours of Friday morning and will appear in court next month.

Lloris said in a statement: “I wish to apologise wholeheartedly to my family, the club, my team-mates, the manager and all of the supporters.

Thankfully, no one was hurt. I'm not going to make any Alonso jokes here.... no, I won't.

Does anyone know how high over the limit he was? Anyone would think he’d turned into Tony Adams and driven the wrong way up a motorway, from some of the reactions on here.

I’m not defending him in any way, but neither am I condemning him until I know the full facts.

Well I fully respect and appreciate the example the club wishes to set to the fans - particularly the younger age groups. But $&%$ all that this weekend - its United away and we have never been able to get one over them at OT.

He simply must apologize. Nothing happens without that. Can you imagine the media (and fan) furor if had he not said anything? That aside, it's the right thing to do.

No way should the captaincy be taken from him on account of this. There are other reasons for not giving a GK the armband, but frankly captaincy in football is not the same as in cricket.

Whilst it was a very irresponsible thing to do, and the club should rightfully consider a form of punishment. What I can't buy into is the linked article stating that we could drop him for United game.

Yes there could well be punishment from the club, but I'd suggest highly unlikely in detriment to our on-field ambitions.

Totally agree with the need to apologize - but my point was that if it is the intention of the club to drop him for a game or two, please not this weekend.

More importantly I hope he knows that he has let himself down. A cliche maybe, but whether he likes it or not, as a club and country captain he is a role model, not just to the kids that sit in the stands, or watch on TV, but to the kids or young players in our academies as well.

Hopefully it'll all be dealt with sensibly by all parties and he can get back to concentrating on his football asap as he is so important to us.

That doesn't really send out the right message though. It's either an important issue that requires him to be dropped in order that it sends out the right message or it's not considered appropriate to drop him. To pick and choose which games to drop him dilutes the issue.

He's going to court for it. No need to punish him twice. The only times clubs do that is when the player faces community service or prison so the players lawyers can say he's all ready being punished to try and get the punishment reduced. Idiot though.

I don't believe it is that significant an issue. The only reason it has made this much news - and hence prominence of the redressal - the is because of his position in public. In other words a PR exercise because he is a role model. Therefore, drop him for a minor game and tick the box.

Being over the limit when you are driving a car is not a minor issue but if it's just a question of making a gesture out of dropping him for a game then they might as well not bother as it makes a mockery of it IMO.

I don't understand the calls to drop him, if he doesn't play it hurts us, it makes no sense.

How many other teams dropped their star players under similar circumstances?

What I don't understand is how a guy worth £30 Million doesn't have a personal driver or even use Uber! Even I can use afford Uber when in London. I absolutely detest drink driving. My friend was killed by a drink driver when he was only 12yo. These guys really should know better. Can't believe Hugo was so stupid but thankfully nobody was hurt and I'm positive that he will have learned his lesson.

Also I don't subscribe to the calls to have him dropped. Yeah strip him of the Captaincy but dropping him will serve no purpose. I'm just thankful that nobody was hurt and as I said I think Hugo will have learned a lesson from this! COYS
