Loan update

Just thought people might be interested in how loan our lads are getting on.

Phil Ifil is a first team regular at mid-table Southampton. The defence there is leaking goals at a terrific rate, but this seems to be due to problems in central defence. At any rate the Sunday People (yeah, I know) report that Southampton are keen to make the signing permanent. I hope that doesn't happen, as i think he could still have a future at Spurs.

Jamie O'Hara is playing in a truly shit Millwall team, but seems to be turning out decent performances.

Charlie Daniels has been involved throughout for Orient, but with the team in the promotion spots has had to be patient when it comes to starts. He has now made the leftback spot his own. This weekend he made the team of the week after scoring a Luke Young like effort.

Lee Barnard has returned after another unhappy loan spell. He scored two in five appearances, but struggled with injuries, illness and the inability of the Crewe midfield to keep the ball on the ground. On his sixth outing he was clattered in the opening minutes, taking a heavy knock on the ankle. He is now back at Spurs recuperating and is not expected to go back to Crewe. A truly unlucky player.

According to the Daily Mail (yes, yes I know), Kieran McKenna is being linked with a loan move to Barnet. I would have thought he was better than that, but I suppose that League Two, if not necessarily a technical step on the reserves, will be more of a physical and mental challenge.

That is as much as I have been able to glean. Interested to hear if anyone knows more (or has heard anything different.)

Poor old Barney. Finally persuades Jol he really is worth a shot in the squad and gets crocked for the whole of the next season, makes a fine start for Crewe and gets crocked again. He has to be one of the unluckiest players we have.

Why are we still loaning players to Millwall?

I hope Ramos keeps tabs on Ifil. I remember him keeping Kewell pretty well contained on his First XI debut (some idiots will say 'But he almost gave away a penalty!').

One of my nephews is an Orient fan and has been impressed with Daniels.

I watched O'hara in the Millwall v Bournemouth game, gave a pretty good account for himself, scored a good goal, although didn't do much else. Not very quick I noticed.

Thanks Eddie.
What do you reckon arre the chances of any of them making it to the first team (for more than a couple of appearances)?

Don't we also have Yeates at Colchester? Heard he's scored a few goals. Think he's on loan unless its now permanent

I saw Bristol City beat Southampton 2-1 a few weeks ago (the Bristol right winger sproule scored a quite incredible goal - ran from halfway and top cornered it). Ifil played at right-back and I wasn't particularly impressed. It's obvious he's a decent dribbler of the ball but I didn't think his defending was great. John Viafara (yes, that one) was incredible in centre back next to him so he got away with a lot of bad positioning. He looked like a midtable championship fullback. Bradley Orr for Bristol was much much better, probably best player on the pitch aside from Viafara (who looks a completely different player to when he played in midfield for Portsmouth)

Up to a point you can spot the contenders, but so much depends on how players are nurtured, and on the breaks. At one point the club almost gave up on O'Hara, but, thanks in part to Super Ed, he turned it round. He now he needs to push on and make the next step. Ifil is another who has not quite made the progress expected, but could yet turn it round. Barnard probably could have made the step up, but his luck has been terrible and time is against him now. Three years ago you would have had difficulty picking Daniels out as anything special, but he has made the most of his chances and is now perhaps the man most likely.

Yeates, who has now been sold, could yet prove a cautionary example. He had a terrible season last year, with two failed loans, and the club gave up on him, letting him go for around £100k apparently. That is starting look like a poor bit of business. I always said with Yeates that he would either end up playing in the Premiership or the Ryman's. It all depended on whether he sorted out his decison making and his temprament. Judging on the glowing reviews he is getting at Colchester it looks like his career path could well take the upwards trajectary rather than downwards one.

Every week in the desultory 15 minutes they give the Championships on Malaysian telly, there's always a goal either by or resulting from Yeates. Pleased for the lad, as I can't imagine he'd ever have made it with us.
