I think people understand the logic of cashing in on a player at his peak with clear technical limitations for a sum that on an absolute basis at least looks ridiculous but "to the outside" we are selling the premier league RB of the year to a direct rival in a their weakest position and sorting out their defence which was their weakest link vs. their world class attack

I would much have preferred to sell him elsewhere, preferably outside the Premiership. But that wasn't ever even a whisper. Walker plainly would only accept a move in England, preferably in the North, nearer where he comes from.

It's actually further evidence that we're pushing him out as much as he is trying to leave.

And, of course, we would have got less money selling him elsewhere. English players in the Premiership generate daft transfer fees.

Big mistake. Best right back in the league, weakens us, strengthens a direct rival. Wrong message to the rest of the team.
This is the best team i have ever seen at Spurs, going since 1969, keeping it together is our best chance of winning the league, let's not throw it away. Trippier is decent and more than decent attack wise but Walker is the best and any more replacement for him is therefore less good.

The reason he was sold, will for definite send a message out to the rest of the team as you put it, but for all the right reasons.

Walker was not their first choice.

Think about that for a moment, well, think about that while Levy counts fifty million quid.

Levy for sure has pulled Pep's pants down and shoved a rather large cucumber up Pep's ass over this deal.

i get the sentiment, but ultimately that leaves us weaker than last season, and City stronger as a direct result of us weakening.

If we're selling a starter to a rival, then we need to sign someone to improve the first team, otherwise we're going backwards.
Be patient, and have faith in our management team.

If we go into August without signing a replacement, we will have definetly weakened our squad. We ideally need two players for every position in order to compete in four comps and get past injury problems etc.

We would be weaker if players heads are turned by the salary that Kyle walker will reveal when he joins man city. Ultimately, only Harry Kane is true Spurs.

50 million is a great price, I do wonder whether we could have stretched to 60 in this inflated market. Walker has reached his peak, it's dowhill from here. I reckon he wiĺl last not more than 2 seasons there.

£50M for a fullback who will probably not be a first choice is good value for money. Its not the fans who decide whether Walker or Trippier is the better of the two. It's Poch's decision, and he has obviously favoured Trippier, even giving him a contract extension. The writing has been on the wall even before the end of last season.

TBF I think Walkers head had already been turned by then.

Kind of highlights what we already know though right - Walker better defensively and Trippier offensively

Really?! He's pulled Peps pants down?!

Regardless of first choice or not he's just sold him a top level RB that is defensively v sound, can get up and down the pitch with a great engine and can also contributes to an already devastating attack in a position where they had zero players a couple of days ago

Doubt city will be losing much sleep paying £10-15m over the going rate when they have materially improved a starting position and money is no object to them

And you nail it on the head. Whilst Levy counts his £50m. As someone that would like to see us move closer to winning trophies vs further away and having just come above City in the near term at least this levels the playing field and sets us back on the pitch.

Let's see how the money gets reinvested but to think we have shafted Pep somehow is ludicrous

He is a great premiership player, but I don't think he is ever going to make a mark at CL level. And for a wealthy side like city with ambitions at that level, this could be a problem.
But it is great value for city as it strengths them in the prem, and weakens us. I like Trippier, but he is a little fragile, plus him and Rose in defence leaves us a little short.

I posted this on Walker's player thread. It belongs here, too:

@Gaz_Gammon was raining heavy hints to this effect a couple of months ago, but no one really picked up on any of it and he never provided any proper details.

So we don't know why, because the club doesn't leak the way it used to. So this side of the tale seems, for want of gossip, not to have shown up on anyone's radar. The narrative has been about "losing Walker", not about "getting rid of Walker".

I had supported some of Gaz's comments during the season that Walker would only leave on the club's terms. The manager had made a decision that he was going to be sold and it was in the team's best interests. And that some players in the squad would support the decision and the rest would hear the message loud and clear. There is more to come out on this when the time is right.

I know it may seem like a case of what message is it to go to Man City and have wages doubled, but Pep won't stand for any nonsense either and Walker could find himself on the fringes in a World Cup year despite being a £50m player.

There was no market for Walker so for the club to get the money they did is impressive. City have overspent for a player who can be replaced. City have overspent on a player who had stopped developing and was no longer improving. Another Aaron Lennon. He was not City's first or second choice player, so they have spent big money on a right back. Their Moussa Sissoko.

We won't lose some of our bigger players because they are settled and don't want to risk not playing well in a World Cup year.

Did he not have a best mate at Spurs? That's why he's gone right?
