Even the pundits almost said Spursy - Spurslike was close.

No kneejerk here although disappointment, as always when we lose. Early days yet and time for Mopo to work on weaknesses. The team also has to learn how to recover quickly from mistakes that cost us points and re-find a rhythm much earlier than a few minutes before the game ends.

And yes, we know it, everyone knows it - we need more fire power up front and absolutely must sign another efficient striker. Oh for another VDV-like player who can assist AND score goals...
We have a player who can assist and score goals but we never seem to want to play him just off Kane where he can do that. I won't compare Lamela to VdV but their best position is the same and so many of us have been saying this for many, many months I had hopes that Poch would try it properly in a league game

Uh-oh! here we go. One game and it's all doom and gloom. Man U didn't play us off the park.
But, Man Utd were very poor yesterday and I think they would probably have lost to some of the teams I mentioned and it would have been the big story of the day

The positives - I know it's only the opening game, but we did not look as defensively vulnerable as we have done, it's early days and let's hope that remains the case and it was positive that we strengthened in this area during the close season.

The negatives - we looked woefully short on attacking threats and options. Frankly it is bordering on the negligent when the fans, everyone and his next door neighbour Poch, our entire coaching staff and the the board must have known since at least January that Adebayor and Soldado would be playing no real part in our future plans and they are both still here and not being brought along to even make the subs bench. We seem to have one plan Harry Kane and Erikson being the creative link and if that goes tits up or they are injured we a well and truly up shit creek without a paddle.

And all this BS and false hope about Ade going to Villa, only for him to say he wants to stay in London, again why wasn't this basic geographical nugget flushed out sooner rather than delays and us being led on for goodness knows what !!!!

If we knew we didn't want then we should have shift em earlier ! Again every man his dog knows we will have to take a loss on them so why not take the loss on them sooner and make a real effort to find replacements instead of procrastinating and doing the square root of sod all with them. Once again points will be lost in the early games because of our inactivity to improve and be bold and decisive in the transfer dept in areas we clearly need to improve on. FFS even Palace appear to have better attacking options than we do, have things really come to that ?

A very unmemorable game. Both sides were mediocre but perhaps that was to be expected coming right at the start of the season. We started quite well but I was disappointed by our response to going behind; we relinquished control of the play for most of the rest of the first half and we didn't really start threatening again until the final part of the match.

To me our weaknesses seem clear - we need more pace, we need to have the option of being more direct and we need more support for Kane. The good news is these problems are not insurmountable and 2 or 3 astute purchases during the remainder of this window could solve these.

I wold also like to see more of the high pressing game Pochettino achieved at Southampton. Hopefully this is something we will improve on as the season gets going.

But they weren't poor because of how effective our press was?

I guess us and Man U are getting relegated then.

We should not have lost.

I blame this on Daniel Levy, who once again failed to get us prepared for the season in favour of getting his balls going trying to sign players at the last possible minute.

It's called mismanagement not intelligence.

To be fair we did go for Anthony Martial but he decided to do a u-turn and sign a new contract with Monaco. Unlike previous season we can't blame this one entirely on Levy, he's not been haggling as much as he used to and he's cut losses on may players that we've sold. The plain fact of the matter is that we have a budget for both fees and wages and we still need to adhere to it.

we were a pretty average 5th last season and at the moment have huge holes in our squad, we played without any imagination or attacking flair today and ended up playing players out of position
Why is that short signted

I think we secured fifth on the last day of the season ans may well have ended up seventh? Some people make is sound that we were robbed of fourth rather than struggled to get fifth.

We created very little and Kane was isolated for much of the game, and for me i am more worried about the three players behind Kane than the two in front of the back four.

Therein lies our problem. No pace of creativity.
Maybe Townsend should play then?
Clinton looks exactly like Townsend except on the left.

Chadli got in a couple good positions but got it all wrong. I still like Dembele in the team but we need proper players like Dembele not just those who try like Lemala, Townsend and sadly Lennon is not interested in Spurs
You mean the guy who creates the most goals?
Who works his ass off and presses well.
Don't apply for the managers job please.

[QUOTE="JAYSTAR, post: 4719507, member: 231Dembele naturally drifts back into the middle and retains possession. He's generally strong under pressure and can bring the ball forward. I prefer him in the middle of the pitch and next to Bentaleb against Chelsea, we saw a very decent double pivot with those two. No he will not always immediately instigate some amazing attack, but he will protect the ball out from our keeper and win it back when we are defending. Ideally he needs to play next to a more visionary, but similar CM and unfortunately we don't have one. Someone who can pass, put balls over the top, release the ball early... Mason is not good enough at that, nor is Bentaleb. Carroll is the best at releasing the ball, but too weak and Bentaleb is having a crisis of confidence after his recent pay rise I reckon. Kramer and Dembele would boss the middle, but not likely to happen apparently.
You mean he will do 2 or 3 pivots, let the opposition get back into position and pass it sideways 5 yards.
No thanks, part of a front 3 or nothing.

Why do people have agendas when they have a different view to you, and people see games differently, why does that mean they no nothing about football
Whole point of a message board
