He's ok for a composed, ball-playing centre back if you are looking to play on the front foot. However he does have some flaws due to not really having a consistent run of games and also playing for a team that has 75% of the ball each game and with such a massive emphasis on technique ahead of everything else. Coming over here he would be tested more physically and in pure defensive skills and I'm not sure how well he would cope.

I'd always prefer a Bartra type of centre back rather than the big, dominating, clogger that some want us to buy, but not really convinced he specifically is the right one.

Hard to find a better CB than Pique in any league whether it be Spain, England or Italy. I'd have a half hearted Pique in our team anyday.

Not at the start of the season he was - which is why he was in an out of the team. He's shaped up recently and found his old self.

From what a lot of you are saying, it seems like he's a smooth, composed football CB, but unfortunately that's something we already have in Vertonghen and not the type of CB we need!

Out injured in the last game of La Liga. Didn't do anything special and is just a back-up for Pique who's been a little bit jaded by the end of the season..

With Dier, Vertonghen and Wimmer, I'd have thought our other centre back needs to be a bit more experienced and a bit more of a physical unit.

Effectively we need an upgrade on Fazio. Not sure Bartra is the man for that role.

Agreed. Like to see a player with mentality when hitting the big games, calm and resolute. We need a experienced player. Naybet anyone?

Seems to be exactly what we already have with Eric Dier. Expecting Kaboul and Vlad to go but with Fazio, Vertonghen, Dier, Wimmer and probably Velkjovic we seem pretty well covered.

Agree with Japhet, we've had 5 CB's this year, but Kaboul has barely featured of late.
RCB - Dier, Fazio
LCB - Vertonghen, Wimmer
Then utilise Velkjovic or Carter-Vickers as 5th choice. Plus, we have Grant Hall on the retained list also.
No need for a further addition.

€12m is not a bargain... he's worth €5m tops. If we're looking at bringing in another centre back it needs to be a quality 1st teamer, not another average much of nothingness.

Played 14 games for the Spanish League champions last season. At 24 years-old has time on his side - and defenders usually take more time to mature than midfielders or forwards. Better him than Fazio...

He's really not very good and would have got a lot less games than 14 if Vermaelen didn't miss the entire season out injured.

You may be right - and I must admit that I've only seen YouTube clips of him - but I would expect that he's much better than Fazio. My hope is that Fazio will be gone by the end of the summer. Better to sell him now (when we might recoup some of the cash already spent on him) than to wait another season for him to be totally found out in the Premier League.

I suspect that the player acquisition was a terrific 'sell' job by his agent to a club desperate to acquire another central defender when the Musacchio deal fell apart. He's tall and he's from Argentina.

Federico Fazio is 28 years-old and he's slow as molasses. Despite his height he's a poor header of the ball and his passing is atrocious (remember some of those heart-stopping moments last season?) and even when he 'successfully' passes to a team-mate you might find the recipient of the pass immediately under pressure. So poor decision-making skills as well.

He's a poor back-up to Dier and both for his own sake and the club's I'm hoping he returns to Spain where the game might suit him better.

JJ says no Bartra. I just hope that we're looking at someone else...
