Maresca on Sevilla's success

Maresca is an under 21 Italian international who was signed by Sevilla when Juande was their coach.
This is what he had to say to Gazzetta dello Sport about Sevilla's success in 2006.

"One of the reasons of our success is Monchi, our DOF. He knows where to go to get the right players for little or no money, like going for Poulsen this year or for me the previous season".

"The other reason for our success is our coach, who arrived last year. Technically and tactically he is top notch. I have worked with both, Capello and Lippi, and I see the same winning mentality in him. One of the reasons for our success is that we are a very balanced side. We attack and defend very well. We play a 4-4-2 formation where everyone knows their roles. That helps the new players to adapt quickly to the team. We may change the players but not our style of play"

I think it's safe to say that so far under Ramos our players don't know what their positions are. Particularly when he makes his mental substitutions.

However it seems to be working so meh.

Commolli has signed also some very good players and a top coach. I rate him higher than Spurs fans seem to do.

I hope he can find a good replacement for Berbatov, that won't be easy, I hear Kerzhakov is a possibility.

The only similarities would be their Slavic names. Kerzhakov is just a forward, not a forward playmaker like Berbatov. The only player Sevilla have that could do a similar job but at a lesser level is Kanoute. If Juande loses Berbatov he better spends well on a top second stiker. Berby is by far Spurs best player.

I agree about Sevilla's strikers. Kanoute is the only one like Berba, except he's obviously not as good.

As I've posted in the Kerzhakov thread, I don't want Kerzhakov for Spurs as he's no better than what we already have, and he doesn't provide any more forward options in terms of striker combinations.

If Berba goes, I'll be furious and p*ssed off. And since our remaining strikers probably can't play together, we'd either have to buy a less good version of Berba, or an ACM playmaker (a Riquelme type) to provide the bullets for Bent/Defoe/Keano.

Juande you make obviously an excellent point about Berbs being very difficult to replace and we would have to spend well to do it.

Do you see any players in La Liga that could do it for us?

Ricardo Oliviera is on loan I believe at Zaragoza from Milan and seems to be doing very well, he also seems to have no future at Milan?

Luis Fabiano has obviously worked with Ramos at Sevilla and is having an excellent season.

Who knows even somebody like Aguero (i know i'm being a bit stupid) at Atletico but he could be the next big thing couldn't he? And he supposedly has a buy out clause which is in the area of Berbs value?

David Villa would love it but no chance, probably less than Aguero.

I know these are all pretty much different in style to Berbs but we can adjust our own style.

Who do you reckon we could get from La Liga to replace Berba if the worse happens?

None of them mate.

The silly thing is if I was to pick the most likely out of all of them at the moment, I'd actually say Villa. That's how rediculously unlikely it is to be honest.

The only reason i say him is due to the current situation at Valencia. I dont think Kun Aguero would fit in too well in England just yet, he's still in that falling over phase a lot of foreign players (C.Ronaldo) go through. Don't think Fabiano would be a success, Oliveira....hmm, a success at Real, but i don't know, it just doesnt give me the feeling that he could translate that form to the EPL.

Like I say, maybe Villa if he really was fed up at Valencia, but thats ridiculous, and let's be honest if he was deffo available, would we be at the front of the cue?....Nope!.

Kanoute was one of the most entertaining players at Spurs during frustrating times and , on his day is , to quote David O'Leary "unplayable" .

Not quite Berbatov standard but works well with pretty much whoever you pair him with which is rare .

Hard to lure a better replacement but won't happen .

Edit : Juande_Ramos , quote "If Juande loses Berbatov he better spends well on a top second stiker." .... unless the management structure changes it will be Commoli deciding who to buy , not Ramos .

Can't think of anyone to be honest. There are some skillful advanced midfielders or second strikers but most of them may be too lightweighted for the Premier League.

Deco seems to be on his way out of Barca. I'm not sure he'd come to us, but he's definitely strong enough to play in the EPL.

He does a lot of simple central midfield passing, a lot of harrying and ball winning, and yes, from time to time he plays defense splitting passes like an advanced midfielder would do, but I see him more as the attacking player in a three man CM formation. Not sure he would fit withing Ramos 4-4-2. I think Ramos is more likely to go for someone more similar in role to Berbatov. After all it was him who wanted Kanoute, and curiously enough he Mali player may be the closest thing to Berbatov playing in the Spanish league.

I agree that Deco probably couldn't play CM in a Ramos 4-4-2.

I really really hope Berba stays, but if he goes we have a real striker problem: Defoe and Keane do not seem to work as a pair; I'd be amazed if Defoe and Bent could play together; and Keane might be able to play with Bent, but we simply don't know.

So we either sign a Berba (Kanoute) type of striker or we play a 4-4-1-1 or in Spanish terms, 4-2-3-1 (with two holding CMs, two attacking wide midfielders and a creative ACM behind one striker). Deco could play that ACM role.

My absolute 2008 nightmare is that we sell Berba and sign Peter Crouch. :bang::bang::bang:
