Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill may turn to Darren Bent in his search for striking reinforcements in the January transfer window after facing stiff competition from Manchester City and Tottenham for the signature of Portsmouth striker Jermain Defoe.

Villa are reported to have expressed an interest in Defoe to Portsmouth as they seek additional personnel to contribute to their attempts to reach the Champions League qualification places.

However, Defoe has also attracted the attention of Tottenham and Manchester City, with the player himself keen to join up with former manager Harry Redknapp at White Hart Lane.

Redknapp gave Defoe his Premier League debut while the pair were at West Ham and signed him for Portsmouth from Tottenham.

Defoe remains O’Neill’s preferred choice but his desire to return to Tottenham coupled with City’s prohibitive spending power means O’Neill has been forced to reassess his options.

The Villa manager has long been an admirer of Wigan and England forward Emile Heskey but the former Liverpool striker, who has been in exceptional form for club and country this year, is ready to run down the remaining six months of his contract before leaving the JJB Stadium for free in the summer.

With Redknapp set to make major changes to his playing squad in January, Bent has emerged as a viable option for Villa. The 24-year-old, who moved from Charlton for £16.5 million in June 2007, has never truly established himself at Tottenham and would relish a move.

O’Neill is also pondering a move for Newcastle United’s unsettled left-sided player Charles N’Zogbia.

The Former French Under-21 international has indicated that he wants to leave St James’ Park and though he is still valued at the club, Joe Kinnear may be willing to offload him to generate funds for his own squad building next month.

N’Zogbia would act as cover on the left-wing for Ashley Young as well as being able to play at left-back, a position he has filled for Newcastle in recent weeks, including the second half against Liverpool at the weekend.

O’Neill needs defensive cover due to his complete lack of confidence in summer signing Nicky Shorey, who continues to reside on the bench despite the former Reading fullback being fully fit and Villa short in numbers at the back.

If we get our money back you have a deal!

-Subject to us actually having 4 strikers by the end of the window!

I'd be happy to give Bent away and be rid of paying his wages. Only my opinion but we'll never achieve anything with him in the side. He can't play with anyone esle up front as he doesn't know how to pass the ball and despite what people say he actually has no pace at all, can't head, can't read or anticipate play. Sadly just not good enough.

Totally agree. Get rid of him but only when we have a replacement.

thats a bit harch on the boy,but 2 seasons at the lane he hasnt really repayed us!

i wish him the best of luck where ever he ends up.

Unfortunatley selling Bent won't be an option if it leaves us with only Campbell as a striker in the uefa cup.

Well its been a good news day for me, Gerrard gets arrested for assault in my home town, and now Villa could be set to sign their second Marlon Harewood! I like Bent but clearly we need someone better, although that applies for various positions within the squad at the moment!

Funny hearing all the bent haters...... Not moaning 6 weeks ago when he bagged 8 or 9 goals in 6 games were you? Not moaning when his goals lifted us from 2 points upto 14 points and out of a relegation spot were you?
Give the lad a chance. For some strange reason, he's had to make way for a useless lazy talentless russian pile of shit over recent weeks. If we are to get rid of anyone in the window, it shud be pavlychenko.

Selling bent would be a massive mistake, if we get him service he will score goals. we need another striker yes but we cant sell him!

Anyone but a world class striker is going to find things challenging if we carry on with 4-5-1.

Can't see us selling him at a loss and can't see Villa spending £16m on him (he's not worth it). All-in-all, can't see it happening.

If either Bent or Pavlyuchenko are sold, whatever you think of them, it should only be if there are replacements lined up and perhaps even already signed. We can't have a situation like the sumemr window. If both are sold, highly unlikely, then 3 forwards must be lined up. If one is sold, two forwards must be lined up.

I don't think we are going to continue with 451. Harry made the telling comment recently that in the right system Modric can play behind 2 forwards. Either Bellamy or Defoe will sign for us I am certain, and if Bent or Pav leaves, a number 9 will come in to play with Bellamy or Defoe. To make the new more attacking outlook possible, either a RB will come in to allow Corluka that midfield berth that he asked for a couple of months back, or a DM will come in, a really good one.

wouldnt be gutted if he was sold but would be nice not to lose a lot of money on selling him.. but is pointless talking about it as spurs would then need to bu 2strikers as we're stuggling at the moment with 2 1/2..(frazier a boy and pav cup tied in uefa!)

Reading these comments reminds me of some of the things that used to be said about Kanoute. Kanoute is a first rate striker, yet nobody had a good word to say for him. How many of you would like him back now.

I wish I am as optimistic as you with respect to the signing of Bellamy or Defoe, and the 'really good' DM. I believe that we do need the players highlighted by you and most importantly, a really good DM. We are definitely in a relegation battle, and from what I have seen of our players so far, there is no prima facie evidence that they have the required mental toughness to survive the battle ahead. I am extremely worried and I have spent my Xmas break analysing the league table as well as hoping that those around us will keep dropping points like us. Hopefully, Middlesborough will drop 3 tonight just like Blackburn dropped 2 yesterday! I am beginning to sound pathetic.

It's great to see you back in full flow BBLG!

10 mill and he's yours..........i know he ain't worth it but perhaps we can fool them

I don't know why people want to blame Bent for everything that is wrong with the World but you know what Spurs fans are like .

Selling our top scorer doesn't make sense to me , even if it finances the purchase of the preferred strike partner of the aforementioned Russian .

We may have to resort to route-1 so I'd be looking at poaching a target man like Crouch or Kevin Davis .

Your telling me that you are excited by the prospect of having Bellamy at the lane? I would rather keep Bent and Pav, after all Bent is still one of the leauges top scorers at the minute .... how many has Bellamy scored?
