Thought I'd start this off.

I'm no ITK but Athletico have a strong interest in Reyes (source SSN), which would open the door for us to step in and get Petrov. We've been linked with him now and again for the past 2 seasons or so, it's not exactly a surprise then to see papers/the media to have linked him with us again recently.

If we all dream for just a few seconds too, imagine the prospect of this guy hitting it off with some other Bulgarian at the club Eek

Bit old, might be a bit of a stop gap, just think a long term person would be better, am talking early twenties who will be with us for 5 seasons or so.. petrov doesnt qualify.. but better than no left winger at all so go for it. But doesnt fit the type of transfers we seem to be doing, with Chimbonda being the exception.

We do need some experience and im guessing he is 28. That means he could have 4 years in him yet. Surely worth it and as there isnt anything better available at the moment it cant be a bad decision.

I'd rather babel who can also play upfront. Young, quick and skillfull. Would provide great attacking threat down the left

The Times said:
Tottenham have a transfer budget of about £30 million, with a winger among their priorities. They remain keen on Martin Petrov, of Atlético Madrid, and are open to offers for players such as Danny Murphy and Teemu Tainio.

This is old news, but I thought I'd put it on the radar. This is from today (Wednesday 23rd) and from the Times newspaper which I recommend to anyone who can read words.

From what I have seen of the guy,he really looks like a quality player and even though he is 28,if he can bring Champions league football to Spurs it will be money well spent.
Pederson and Downing have both turned us down pretty emphatically in the past and I really cannot see us asking them again.
I have a hunch that the guy we are after is Petrov and the rest of the rumours are smoke screens.

Petrov really is the nuts. He did have a bad injury but if he's fully recovered, I don't see it being a worry. If anything, he'll be fresh.

I'm not concerned about his age. 28 means he's in his prime and its about time we bought someone for more immediate effect rather then potential. As I said, he'd be a star.

Funny, last summer Ray and I both, separately, ran into a bunch of Ajax fans and got drinking and chatting with them, and heard the same. They'd absolutely love some mug to take Babel, because he's not very good.

I couldn't possibly comment, because I've seen very little of him. How much have you seen?

There isn't point having Petrov unless we have a decent passer in the middle. He is player that thrives on being released early so he can exploit space with his pace. I really like him, but with our current squad I don't think we'd see the best of him. A good passer who has good vision in the middle of the park would be great for players like Petrov and Lennon, but other than the Hudd we don't have that. Petrov was at his best when he played at Wolfsburg and had Miroslav Karhan playing in the midfield. Karhan and Petrov had a great understanding and Wolfsburg would catch teams on the break because of Karhans vision and passing releasing Petrov.

Good comment. However, if I'm not mistaken, Petrov was the main man for Bulgaria last autumn (4 goals against Romania, Holland, and Slovenia), and I'm not sure they have a decent passer.

I'm worried about his form. I'm not impressed with his performances after the injury, especially vs Barca.

I agree with you, but even without someone to release him early, he is still a left winger we desperately need, and would still improve us.

I would still prefer someone in the mould of Pedersen on the left, rather than an out and out winger.
We already have a winger in the shape of Lennon, and having 2 on the pitch playing in a 4-4-2 would be too attack minded.
Pedersen, or someone in his mould would balance our midfield better in my opinion. Someone to be creative in crossing and passing, more than his dribbling and pace would work well with having 2 options on either flank.

petersen is not really needed if we get bale. his dead ball delivery is stunning. an out and out speedy winger needed.

There is a possibility that he will never return to his best, but with modern surgery and rehabilitation techniques, that is much less of a risk than, say, 20 years ago. And just because he's had a bad injury doesn't mean that he is going to get injured regularly in the future.

The risk as I see it, in buying a player in his late 20's from abroad, is that they often take a season or so to acclimatise to the pace and style of Premier League football, and there's less of career to play with after the adjustment. This is what in my view would make Pedersen or Downing a better option. They're both quality players who have no need to adjust.
