According to my memory and the match report on Ceefax, they only had one shot on goal?!

Just because their finishing and ability to turn a very good chance into a header or shot on goal was so inept shouldn't take away from the fact that I saw at least 3 occasions where a wigan player won a free header or missed his header when totally unmarked.
When the oppo has a great chance but nothing at all comes from it, it doesn't mean they never had chances.......if you understand what I mean!!

Sounds like a pretty solid performance all in all. Obviously we have to put it in perspective that it was against Wigan but it is a great way to go into the international break, lots of goals, a clean sheet :) Also, our back 4 should all be at the lodge for the next 2 weeks and putting in some serious work!

Thought it was a very good performance all round today, except for Lee, who to me is just hopeless. He gets in good positions, but every time he has the ball he displays his inability to cross, gets shaky and just passes the ball back to any on rushing Spurs midfielder to put the ball in for him. He has no left foot so cannot play left back. Simple. On at least two occasions today he literally passed the ball out of play.

Lee was never beaten - and he intercepted very well 3 or 4 times.

LEE is our most consistent defender who enjoys defending and very rarely gets beaten by his man. It's not his job to supply crosses etc, he's paid to defend and keep a clean sheet, first and foremost. People should remember that, especially with our defensive record lately.

Very rarely gets beaten by his man? So we'll forgo all his stand-offish behaviour. But what about the cardinal sin of turning his back on the ball?

Dont even go there about what our defenders do well and what mistakes they make, we haven't got all night but i'll guarantee Lee's made less mistakes (not including Ledders) than any other of our defenders in the last 2 seasons

I'm not sure why people are ranting and raving about Berbatov so much- perhaps he looked great on the streams or something? From WHL, he looked good but didn't contibute a whole lot.

.....

You can't rate somebody highly just for being a great talent- otherwise Cronaldo would get a match rating of 10 every game...

The 2 sites I checked - Skysports and Eurosport have Berbs MOTM. You sure you watched the same game we did?

His touch is exquisite and his vision is brilliant- I'd say he's the most talented player in our squad, by a good margin. However, he spent alot of time whinging and standing with his hands on his hips. His pass for Jenas's second was good, as was his touch to set up Lennon, but he contributed nowhere near as much as Jenas (or maybe even Lennon, for that matter). You can't rate somebody highly just for being a great talent- otherwise Cronaldo would get a match rating of 10 every game...

Berbatov mom without a shadow of doubt. Truely world class performance. 2 goals and an assist from Jenas, yet he doesn't come close.

some fella on 1089 rang in claiming to have been a spurs fan and supposedly was at the game today, he said berba was uninterested and should leave in January!!

some people hey!!!

Sorry mate you are wrong. Lee was easily and has been all season, our best defender last night. He rarely gets beaten and put in some timely challenges.

I thoroughly enjoyed the game today. Some small differences were starting to emerge in our play. First off, I just want to say that previously Wigan had been pretty unlucky when I'd seen them. Often deserving more out of games than they got. That said, they were pretty shite today but a fair bit of that was us. The first thing I noticed was our pressing of the opposition when they were in possession was improved. It has previously been a refular grumble of mine and was fucking good to see. At times we played our best football of the season so far I thought. Big reason was that a few of our players had they're best games this season I felt,\all on the same day. Berbatov was at his best. Jenas was outstanding, Lennon had his best game this season. Chimbonda the same. Malbranque & Keane also played well. The move that led to Jenas missing his hatrick chance was the best footballing move we have put together all season - maybe some of last too - if only he'd fucking scored it would have been one of the goals of the season so far. On the negative side Dawson was poor. He lost his man twice from set pieces totally, and was really lucky not to et punished, and his distribution was absoloutely awful all day. I think if he can look this bad on a day like today it should be clear that he is just not good enough. Ratings:

Robinson 5 - SFA to do

Chimbonda 8 - Great game. Attacked particularly well and no problems defensively

Dawson 5 - Only two times he had to concentrate, he couldn't.

Kaboul 6.5 - Much better with the ball than dawson. Much more of a threat in the oppo box. Still has plenty of defensive learning to do but did OK today.

Lee 6.5 - Tidy, no dramatics.

Lennon 8 - Great game. On the ball much more today and worked hard too.

Jenas 9 - This is what frustrates the fucking hell out of me. Jenas has all the attributes to be a Viera. Mentally he just doesn't always bring it. Today was one of those days when he was at his very best. All over the park and most importantly supporting the attack.

Zokora 6.5 - Pretty tidy, worked hard covering ground, and actually hit a shot on target. Also played Chimbonda in.

Malbranque 7.5 - Played well.

Berbatov 9 - This was one of his best games in a spurs shirt. He was everywhere. His hold up play was outstanding. Skillfull, industrius, imperious at times. he now needs to bring this game with him every week.

Keane 7.5 - The first goal was vintage Keane. First hald he was on song, buzzing around. Second half he faded a bit.

Bent 7.5 - Took his chance well. did ok.

We must sort out the defence. Dawson is not good enough. It is that simple. Because even if we have 4 or 5 players on top form we will still be undone by individual inadiquacies against more lethal opponents. But the last word should be what a great performance in general by the team. They looked fitter, worked harder and earnt the right to play some terrific football.

Robbo - 6 Nothing to do.
Chimbonda - 7 Better.
Dawson - 6 Bit shaky at times, passing left some to be desired.
Kaboul - 7 Much better, won nearly everything in the air.
Lee - 6 One of his poorer games, still pretty solid.
Lennon - 8 Much better, running at defenders and having a go from range.
Jenas - 8 Much more energy, faded in second half. Took goals well, should have had 3.
Zokora - 7 Much more energy, faded in second half.
Malbranque - 7 Standard Malbranque performance, shame about the injury.
Berbatov - 9 What a player this guy is!
Keane - 6 Great assist, little else.

Tainio - 6 Did alright when he was on.
Bent - 7 Took goal extremely well, looked enthusiastic.
Defoe - 6 Nothing of note.

Excellent first half, decent second half - Wigan really didnt stand a chance.

Defence: Lee very good defensively, Chimbonda excellent going forward. Daws/Kaboul handled Bent good, but are still suffering from lack of coordination/communication at crosses and set pieces. The marking just aint good enough.

Midfield: where did that display from Jenas come from? Rellae excellent going forward, could have had two more. Fantastisc display. Zokora was also very good in the first half, but went a bit uninterested in the second half. Steed proved once again his attacking skills, while Lennon - tough not as good as steed or back to his best - got a good performance and an excellent goal. Tainio is a good squad player, and did a decent job. But he is not comfortable at the
wing

Strikers: Berba back to his best. He still lacks the finishing of last season, and he still doesnt move enough around. He keeps standing still when he should have made runs. but his touch was really, really good. Kickstarted his seasons vs Wigan last year, might have done the same this time around.
Keano good as always, deserved a goal - but really good assist for Jenas. linked up well with Steed, jenas and Berba.
Defoe didnt do much, Bent got a Bent-goal - speed, strength and lethal finishing. really good to see him scoring that kind of goal!

Ramos - Nothing controversial. Interesting to see that he doesnt just rotate; both Lennon and Keane were subbed after they went a bit quiet. Berba was kept on because he was producing the goods....

actually that git Gale was pretty accurate, you couldve driven a bus through the middle of our defence at times, it was probably the result of robbo demanding that they let him have room in the six yard box. there was one moment that they had 2 men free 8 yards out and both our cbs were out jumped by Bent to nod the ball down, which fortunatley he did badly.

:eek:mg:

I've been quite a big critic of Berbs this season, but he was simply magnificant yesterday. On par with his Bolton performance last season. He played a big part in 3 of our 4 goals. How is that not contributing?

Admittedly I watched it on FF, and yes there was the obligatory sulky as well as silky moments, but that's Berbs and we as fans have have to get used to it. I don't think this side of his game is going to change....ever.

He looked to me to be pressing the ball much more than usual, as were the whole team, even when 3-0 up.

Close MOTM between Berbs & Jenas for me, but Berbs just shades it.

The set up for Lennons great volley (and here I was thinking he didn't have a good shot on him ), was moment of the season so far for me. I could watch that goal over, and over, and over...you get the idea.

Oh and staying On Topic :

Robbo 6 - Not a great deal to do but a clean sheet is a clean sheet
Chimbo 6 - good going forward, but left Lennon exposed once or twice
Kaboul 6 - Taming his Hollywood tendancies, looked more solid, but still a couple of errors that could cost us.
Lee 6 - A couple of dodgy moments. Think his days may be numbered.
Daws 6 - Needs experience beside him, having a difficult season.
Lennon 8 - looked lively, and looked like he was enjoying himself. Great volley
Jenas 9 - Almost MOTM. Hopefully Ramos can put some consistency into him.
Zokora 6 - Jury still out for me. Good run and actually got a shot on target!
Malbranque 7 - Looked good, and seems to be enjoying life under Ramos.
Keane 7/8 - Lively, and a typical Keane performance. Our most consistant performer so far.
Berbs 9 - MOTM, fantastic display and as Robbo has said, is unplayable on his day. Hopefully the start of things to come.

Bent 7 - Very well taken goal.
Tainio 6 - Did nothing wrong but didnt get very involved
Defoe 6 - not enough time

starting XI:
Robinson 6.5
Chimbonda 6 - Good going forward but still not conviced in defending.
Dawson 6.5 - lost his man after 1-0 despite Kaboul was there, they almost score but did well in the air after that !
Kaboul 6 - was ok
Lee 6.5 - ok in defending but poor clearing and long passes.
Zokora 6 - ok
Jenas 9 - scored two, 1 assist plus good work.
Lennon 8 - decent attacking runs plus good goal. should do better with crosses and long shots.
Berbatov 9 - nice touches and 2 assists. loved him when he went back in corner kick for Wigan and cleared it by his head :)
Keane 7 - vital assist in vital time and worked hard as everytime.

subs:
Tainio 6
Bent 6.5
Defoe - not enough time

manager:
Ramos 7.5 Good result. Also, I liked his subs & attemps to change the system latter in the game because it was long time since doing it when we are up !
