Usually 3.

CL final they played Kroos, Casemiro and Modders in a midfield trio.

Zidane has favoured a three, but you can add Isco to that list to for that role.

For what it worth, Madrid supporters on Reddit are claiming that Kovacic has firmly established himself as Modric's heir and won't be going anywhere. Ceballos is seen as a signing for the future that won't affect Kovacic's role of rotating with Modric.
As I thought. Modders isn't getting any younger and they must have an eye on replacing him. I think there's space for all of them given how many games Real can expect to play over the course of a season.

Illaremendi: so Spanish that every time I read, wrote, uttered or heard the name I reached for my Rioja and cold meats
Yet, ironically, Basque and as such would probably prefer not to be though of as Spanish.

Fucks sake- you just woke me up from blissful ignorance. Now I've got to feel like a dumb twat. Again

So AS have supposedly said we had a bid turned down for him. €23mill

I would guess that maybe upping that a bit would get him, certainly the kind of player who could take this team forward. Right age, good attitude, technically very good, can play different roles, ticks all the boxes.

Fingers crossed on this one from me.

Just looks like such a no brainer to me. Plenty of games to go around and with Dembele hitting 30 and his injury record this would give us great depth and options in CM, with a view to him being an AM option also. Would worry a bit for Winks, but he has a different skill set to the other two which adds variety.

Price and wages seem affordable, and we seem to be keen on the odd Real reject even if our record of sealing the deal is poor!

Would be a statement signing too, for fans, media and players (which would be a bonus, we shouldn't hinge a deal on this).

This is another example of Twitter accounts twisting things because either:

1. They can't be bothered to read the article properly, or just can't read
2. They want more RTs

The AS article merely linked a previous report where they mention the Daily Star's report that we had bid, which wasn't true.

Sorry to bump up this thread for no reason but I didn't know much about Kovacic's playing style till I viewed the video in the below article.

He is exactly what we need! Picture Dembele's dribbling ability but with a bit more pace. It also seems as if he is more effective and a better passer It's a pity jj has said it's fake news but this type of signing would be brilliant for us. Young, room to improve, just below elite level but affordable.

I believe @ryantegan said he was being hawked around Europe. I don't know why we aren't interested as it seems as though he has a slightly different playing style to Winks. Maybe they want to blood Onomah?

Don't even want to think about Kovacic to be honest. Seems such a great opportunity to get a top drawer player in who would (imho) fit like a glove and be a natural successor to Dembele. He could also easily cover for Eriksen or play alongside Winks. Absolutely convinced it's a non starter but not the faintest idea why we're not testing the water. Kovacic has a level of awareness and footballing intelligence that Ross Barkley will never have IMO.

Personally I find it appalling that we haven't identified a true successor to Dembele. Kovacic fits the bill perfectly. He's got age, passing range, the ability to dribble and hold the ball and the physical attributes to go with it.

We have always needed a player that can hold the ball and move it through to the opposing half for the occasions when our passing and ball movement is suspect against certain teams that disrupt our flow (ex. Liverpool). In the past it used to be Modric, when he left, we got Dembele to fill that void and he did it with aplomb albeit with a limited passing range. He's already 30 and with his injury record, it's not like things are looking up in that department. It shocks me that we still don't have a back up for him.

To be fair, you don't know they haven't got someone eyed up who they want to bring in. Poch and Levy are certainly not stupid, so I am pretty sure they know Moose has a couple of seasons left in his peak and he will need a successor
