Depending on what money is involved for Modric, if he indeed is going to request to leave we should certainly look into it.

The AS article suggests his salary is 9m EUR which is around £160-170k, which is now in our pay structure. Even at 33 he's the best CM on the planet and was a machine at the WC. If we could somehow get him he would be the marquee signing that would get the place buzzing again.

Obviously would be based on what the fee is, but I doubt Inter would be willing to pay much, there's been suggestion of a loan even. Does seem like the Croatian contingent at Inter may have turned his head though.

I can’t help shake the feeling that the club don’t see CM as big of a need as a lot of fans do. I think if we get one, it will be a rotational piece rather than a bonified starter. We’ll see.

We've been looking at CM for the last 3 years, I can't imagine with a week left the club all the sudden was like "eh, never mind lets just forget it".

Um...it was such a massive priority we’ve been looking for 3 years? :cautious:

Besides, It’s not necessarily get one or don’t get one. It’s spend the money on a bonified starter e.g. Kovacic, or not e.g. Barkley last January.

Fair enough, think I misunderstood what you were saying. I just can't imagine Poch looks at this squad and doesn't think he needs a good CM.

Come on don’t back track now... you have rated “funny” or “spam” to almost every post I have seen that is not particularly positive. You appear to be the most chilled fan around. Good on ya, you are either far more wise than a lot of us or just refuse to accept the truth. Anyway, we’ll find out soon enough.

I think you'd be surprised at how many of us are completely relaxed about this window. I came into it expecting to lose Dembele, Rose and Alderweireld and not caring at all whether we signed anybody.

Yes, I'd be delighted to see us sign a world class player, but I still don't really care whether we sign anybody, because what I'm actually hoping for is that some of our youngsters get opportunities and go on to prove themselves. I like seeing quality youngsters break through a lot more than I like new signings.

I guess the concern is around the fact that Poch obviously does want to add quality, the fans largely agree that some quality is needed (in CM and AM) and that it’s not forthcoming is an issue.

Honestly, if we end up with Grealish and Martial (even if it means losing Toby) I’d be totally cool with that, as I think it’s what Poch wants. Ideally I’d like another CM, but if he’s happy and focused, all good. I’d love it to be Kovacic, but this feels a bit like Miguel Veloso or Mark can Bommel - they were never on the cards, the fans just whipped themselves into a frenzy about a player they all wanted.

Just look at his latest press conference though. He wants good players, and I’m sure he’ll be casting envious glances at his rival managers who he probably thinks are (in the main) less talented managers than he is

How is this thread 42 pages? Have we had any serious links all summer?
It's 42 pages because people are desperate for a top quality CM, something we've been missing since Modric left.

WTF is all this chat about Modric?

Just in case you've all been sucked into this alternate dimension through some sort of Scouse Portal, our chairman in this Universe is Daniel Levy. Danny Bhoy. I would be more than 'mildly surprised' if he were to entertain this.

Farewell and good travels back to a Universe where the Spurs Chairman has a thick head of hair and enjoys flicking 'fiddy dollah bill' at ageing strippers in Peter Crouchfellow's strip club.

Who is the last player who came through a club's youth system and went on to win the league with that team as a starting XI player? It's incredibly rare, especially for a midfield/attacking player, to come through and be good enough to play for a title challenging team. As you go down the league table and the quality drops, it becomes easier for a youth player to make the jump into the first team, but to have one good enough to come in and be a starting player for title challengers is pretty unlikely. Aside from the freak Leicester team, I think the last player that would qualify as that would be Danny Welbeck.

So basically I think that if we're hoping that our youth players are going to be good enough to fill in the holes in our first XI, we may be disappointed. We should spend some money to fix the gaping CM hole that we'd had the last few years.

People over rate the living shit out of those guys. We've had what 2 come off as legit players capable of this level (I guess Winks counts as that, but I'm not dead set on that opinion) in the last 6 years?

I understand you want to see those kids make it but it just isn't realistic. I've seen the same said about Tom Carrol, Pritchard, Mason (should have just kept him instead of fucking Sissoko), etc. The fact is 99% of these kids just aren't going to be good enough especially for where we are as a club.

I don't think he played for Chelsea in their title winning season did he? Decent example but Chelsea are looking for a new CB this window as well which suggests that they also might not view him as good enough.

In any case my point isn't that youth players don't come through into the first team, but that hoping one does in the position you so happen to need them to isn't very wise. It's better imo to fill in the gaps in the team in the transfer market and then if youth players prove to be at an equal or better level then that's a bonus.

I'm not sure that a bona fide solution to our central midfield conundrum would be at his most effective if he had to play in that condition.
