If De Ligt has proven himself in two years, we will not be able to compete for him.
How much higher could a player from the Eredivisie fee possibly be? To me De Ligt is worth that number from now until he moves to a bigger league and performs against better competition.

I’m thinking that if a player of his potential does prove himself, then he’ll be off to a superclub.

How much more can he prove himself though is what I'm saying? He's done it in Europa League, the highest Ajax is going to get, done it two years in the Eredivisie, doing it now in the national team, etc.

If he carries on at the same level I guess, and proves consistency. If we are seriously interested, we should pay up and sign him now. Otherwise, we should get someone else in.

My ideal scenario is to buy him and loan him back, isn't that what Ajax want anyways. Keep Toby for another year and then whatever happens with him happens.

That sounds great in theory, and I would love that. But it seems Toby has burned his bridges here, which is a shame.

Yup. He won't be 19 until August, and young CBs always need time to mature and learn. Typically CBs don't peak until 26 or 27.

Crucially though de Ligt is a ball playing CB, and nearly all the top clubs, apart from Mourinho's Utd, want CBs with his passing range, technique and ability to bring the ball out.

If he continues to develop, de Ligt is Pep's dream CB, and Shitty may well pay a world record fee for a defender to get him. Unless Raiola vetoes it, because his hatred of Pep is greater than his love of money.

That is clearly not the ideal situation. Pochettino doesn’t want Toby, and next year he will leave for a cut price. In fact this is clearly a f**king stupid scenario
That's my ideal scenario and should be for the fans. You're right it would be so fucking stupid to keep one of the best CB's in the world and then have the best CB prospect in the world waiting in the wings.

That would be horrible!

You all can continue to cheer for the great transfer fees, I want to cheer for the best team we can possibly field.

Why do people keep saying he is one of the best CBs in the World? You have to play to earn those plaudits and he couldn’t get into the starting line up last year. Also money clearly does matter so throwing away probably £25 million to keep a player the manager doesn’t want is absolutely stupid.

Cause when's he's played he is one of the best CB's in the world. If half a season out of the lineup has made you forget, you should go back and watch some games from the beginning of the season cause he was amazing.

Like I've said before, if 25 million is that big of an issue for this club we really aren't going to contend for major trophies. We had 40 mil net spend last year, we aren't freakin Brighton.

No he is not one of best in the World when he plays. The reason he didn’t play is because we had two better players occupying the positions. Yeah for first season he was incredible and would has deserved that plaudit, in his second less so but you would get away with it, last season he was poor anytime he got a game.
Don’t re-write history.

£25 million is a huge sum of money, and could make a huge difference when it comes to signing a player. Yet hey ho you think it doesn’t matter?

This is all well and good in theory, but what if Poch has no plans on playing him, even if we keep him?

If we can shift Alderweireld for de Ligt this summer, regardless of which club Toby ends up at we should. Getting an extra £25m for him this year means more to Spurs than where he ends up, after all, all Man U will have to do is wait 12 months and force our hand.

If we can get an extra £25m this time around and invest it in other areas of the squad we should 100% be doing so

Alright, you clearly can't be reasonable if you don't think Toby was great in 16/17 either.

He's played him a few times since the contract dispute. Time heals all wounds, isn't that the saying?

Yeah, that's clearly not what he said when he said:

If you are going to post every 5 minutes in every thread then you should perhaps not be so sensitive to someone calling your opinion out.

@heelspurs 15/16 was his first season, 16/17 was his second where he said in his second season he was "less so but you would get away with it".

Not sure where I was sensitive? Simply responded to someone who said it was a "fucking stupid scenario".

Marc Overmars came out and said De Ligt and Frenkie de Jong are not for sale...but left the door open saying
“They are still only 19, 20 years old. Frenkie de Jong, Donny van de Beek and Matthijs de Ligt are not for sale as far as we are concerned, not even for an insane amount.
“Of course, Davinson Sanchez’s move [to Tottenham] last year showed that it is not always easy to stand firm."

He definitely left the door open with that last comment he made. If Toby leaves he's surely on our radar
