Have to agree. For every ferdinand there was a ledley. It is not a position that you certify with talent at that age.
He is good. But it's not a messi or brazilian ronaldo call.

England currently don’t have any centre backs anywhere near that level.

If a Rio or Ledley became available to us this summer would you honestly turn it down?

Not really the point being made. There are probably other youngsters that in 5 years will be on a similar level to de light at 23.

England have some of the best youth in the world. I wouldn't be suprised if some of them weren't stars.

John Stones is the best of the lot, and he is a weak link for City...

Maybe I have been sucked in by the hype, but I think de Ligt is the kind of player you build around. There are not many CBs in the world who are truly comfortable (and capable) playing the ball out of defense right now - which is how Poch wants to build attacks. When you find one - tops teams pounce for a reason - they are a rare breed.

You say, "Wait 5 years for another" But, in 5 years, there will be another City willing to overpay to get the rare commodity. Its time to pick our spots - and I think de Ligt is one to go for (much more so than Sessegnon).

I don’t disagree with your conclusion but Stones better than Otamendi?

Who said Poch wants 3 CBs every game? He's favoured 4231 for most of this season. 3-5-2 creates more problems up the field too with the amount of attacking players we have on our books. We will not keep all of Son, Alli, Eriksen, Moura and Lamela happy playing with only 2 Ams imo. That's not including other players we could sign this window such as Martial. Davies has played in a back three for Wales and on the left of the three would be a viable option should Poch look to use that in the odd game if required.

The needs of the team have to come before any one individual for me. It's all very well Dier wanting to play CM, but he isn't good enough there and he's a far better centre back in my opinion. I think with Toby leaving it's a fantastic opportunity to give him some real responsibility at the back. On top of that he's got some good domestic and European experience under his belt, something that's needed at CB. This would also allow us room and extra funds to bring in a more progressive midfield player that most of us think we need.

If we were to get De Ligt and use Dier as a midfield player, then I think there's a glaring lack of experience too. If Vertonghen was injured, then Sanchez, Foyth and De Ligt would be very inexperienced especially for those big CL games. Who's going to lead? This is another reason why i'd favour Dier being moved back. I really don't think it's as crazy as it might sound.

It seem you enjoy slightly altering somebodies words to enhance your own ability to communicate your views, and that's really not an admirable quality.

Furthermore, in fact we know that Pochettino wants to be able to play 3 CMs. There is a common misconception that all choices Pochettino makes always are the perfect reflection of what would have been his ideal situation if he could pick freely. Sometimes his hands are tied based on what players are available to him, not based on his access to a constant Nirvana-like squad situation.

Look, it's simple. If Alderweireld goes, a CB is going to come in, whether or not you like it.

You must not have been a Spurs fan for long. Personally I'm waiting til August 1st before I make any judgements on that one.

Been a Spurs fan long enough thanks.

If you honestly think we’ll only buy one player this summer then you might want to review our history.

Can’t remember that ever happening in a summer window.

I am talking the england youth that almost won every international competition going.

Tottenham hope Ajax relationship will offer edge in Matthijs de Ligt transfer race with Toby Alderweireld set for Spurs exit

Tottenham hope their strong connections with Ajax will help them win the battle for defender Matthijs de Ligt, as they prepare for life without Toby Alderweireld.

With Alderweireld almost certain to be sold, Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino wants to sign a centre-half this summer and the club have admired De Ligt since he broke into Ajax’s team in 2016.

It is understood there have already been discussions between the clubs about a possible deal.

But the 18-year-old is also a target for a host of top European clubs, including Manchester City, and Tottenham would have to surpass the club-record £42million they paid Ajax for Davinson Sanchez last summer

They are also understood to be keen on Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles.

Spurs would not be able to compete in a bidding war for De Ligt with Premier League champions City, who finished 23 points above them, but they are hopeful that their long-established relationship with Ajax will give them the edge.

The relationship between the clubs dates back to at least 2010, when Spurs extensively scouted Luis Suarez, only to decide against pursuing the Uruguay striker.

Although Suarez joined Liverpool in January 2011, Spurs beat Arsenal to a deal for Ajax’s Jan Vertonghen 18 months later and Christian Eriksen followed in 2013.

Sanchez signed last August, despite firm interest from Italy. All three signings have been huge successes and, along with Harry Kane, were among Spurs’ most consistent performers last season.

Alderweireld, who came through the Ajax ranks, has also impressed at Tottenham since signing from Atletico Madrid in 2015, following a season-long loan at Southampton.

Manchester United are interested in the Belgium international, who has refused to sign a new contract, but Spurs are yet to receive any bids.

Spurs also admire Ajax defender Joel Veltman and winger Justin Kluivert, the 19-year-old son of former Barcelona and Holland forward Patrick.

Kluivert has said he will not sign a new contract at the Johan Cruijff Arena and claimed Ajax tried to sell him to Spurs without his consent last summer.

Spurs are not thought be pursuing him this summer.

Don't see how the relationship will help if another club offers more than us

They aren't going to tell City to keep their extra millions because they like Levy (assuming City outbid us)

This is a good point, but Poch has been quoted as seeing Dier's long term future as a centre back somewhat against the player's wishes. Is there a quote from Poch or ITK that he wants to play three CMs? If so, that's good news as I think our current crop of players are best suited to a 4-3-3 formation in a very similar mould to Guardiola's City. It's the first i've heard of Poch wanting to play 3 CMs.

The one line from that that still really grinds my gears - The relationship between the clubs dates back to at least 2010, when Spurs extensively scouted Luis Suarez, only to decide against pursuing the Uruguay striker.

Thanks, Harry :banghead:

If I remember correctly, that was actually Sherwood's fault. Harry sent Sherwood to watch him and he reported back that he was too similar to VDV.

Spot on. 2 'managers' that clearly know / knew fuck all about a player or his ability. Professionals, you know.
