Surely City want de Ligt as a replacement for the ageing Kompany.

Exactly this & Otamendi & Stones can't be relied upon all the time. They want a squad to be able to win everything, and with their riches, they can afford to buy mega expensive squad players

With reports now coming out of Argentina that we don't want another centre back instead we are promoting Juan Foyth im getting worried for this deal...

We've seen how this ends. I'm not being kneejerk or pessimistic, just being a realist. We never get our top targets so let's just move on if he's gonna cost too much. Give Toby the contract and spend the extra money on a CM

"Auction" could also also simply be tactics. "Thank you Danny boy for sharing your thoughts. We will now call the top three clubs you hate the most to see if we can make you offer more than a tenner up front"

Don’t want to ask Herc questions because it’s also frowned upon to ask about ITK but very curious if we are posturing or the bidding has gotten beyond our comfort level. If it starts going into the €60m-€70m range, hard to see us seeing it through. Pessimistic maybe but that’s my opinion.
Obviously I have no idea.

I suspect that Poch has an overall budget - within reason he can spend that as he sees fit. So, it becomes less about what one player costs, and more about how do you fill all the needs - if you over-spend on one player. I think we could spend £70M on de Ligt* - but that comes at the cost of not having those funds for other areas.

*and, just because we "could" does not mean we "should", though I feel like de Ligt has a much lower risk of failure than many players.

Title challengers always go for the best available talent.

Mid-table squads go for the player "who doesn't need to start every game"
A fair and correct point but this isn't an empty cheque book scenario and in my eyes i'd rather that £15m+ gets spent on a centre midfielder. All philosophical of course.

If Verts twists his ankle or gets sent off again next season, who is going to fill in if we want to play 3 at the back? Dier can be horrid in defence as much as he can be good.
Another fine point but we can't plan for every single player in our squad to get injured and to have a 40m+ backup just in case. We aren't Man City.

Soooo... you're saying we haven't been trying to bring in de Ligt?

Take it up with Poch... (y)

de ligt won't be backup, if one of the starting cb is injured i think we would change to back 4

Probably an unpopular opinion but IMO Foyth has shown nothing to suggest he's ready for the step up to premier league football.

If this De Ligt news is true, I hope that's a sign of keeping Toby - because if Jan gets injured we're quite simply ****ed

I'm not ITK, i'm just saying I don't agree with the principal of paying £40m+ for 18yr old centre half in our squad scenario.

de Ligt won't choose where to go based on what they'll pay him, if he doesn't think City is right for him at this time he won't be convinced by their wages, that said I don't know that he doesn't think they are right for him at this moment.

If it makes any difference he'll be 19 by the time the season starts..
