Ajax are no longer at that pedigree that I'm talking about and you know that. Sure they are one of the most storied clubs in world football but they aren't that anymore.
Lost the Europa League Final to Man Utd 2 years ago. They are hardly Celtic.

...assuming that the team around De Ligt in 5-10 years time is as good as the team we have around Toby now though! It's not an easy, no-brainer decision, but I'd probably take the bird in the hand now rather than the two in the bush later.

Stupid proverb. Clearly, if you can get your hand in the bird's bush, you do it.

Ajax "are at this point refusing to let De Ligt go this summer" (According to the Ajax watchers at the papers) . They'd want at the very least a sale-lease back type deal whereby he would stay in Amsterdam for 1-2 more years.

I can't see us spending 50m + on a defender only to receive him 1-2 years later. I know Liverpool did it with Keita, it just doesn't seem like our way of doing things.

Maybe we should just leave this then and maybe get him next summer or after as a Vertonghen replacement?

Wonder if they’d accept CCV?

Or we could send them Foyth on loan for a year. Would probably benefit both. We have high hopes for Foyth but he he needs to get more match time under his belt and Ajax would be somewhere his skills on the ball would be appreciated.

If De Ligt gets close to reaching his potential then the prospect of as many as 10 years with him is better than a few more with an ageing Toby.

I think that age and injury concerns are the main reason to go with De Ligt over Toby. In a perfect world we would have both, but that's not an option. Yes, De Ligt is young, but he has showed maturity well beyond his years as he has worn the captain's armband on multiple occasions for Ajax. The prospect of having a De Ligt, Sanchez, and Foyth as our CBs for the foreseeable future is quite impressive. Not to mention that Vertonhghen still has a few good years left in him.

For me, Foyth desperately needs matches. Hopefully he can get more than he did last season, whether that is with us, or loan. Though it only makes sense for me to loan him out IF we get De Ligt.

It will be tough to see Toby leave, but hopefully we can get the deal done for De Ligt.

Not even if we activate the year on Toby's deal and keep him until next summer (or even the end of his contract the following year)?

If a loan-back gave us the edge with Ajax in getting the deal done I could see a case for it. Although City are much better equipped at CB to pay and wait than we would be. Keeping TA when he doesn't really want to be here doesn't seem like a great idea and not something MP would fancy much either, I expect.

The latest chat is that Toby is trying to re-commit to the club, so maybe he'd actually play his bollocks off to convince Poch and Levy to keep him.
