According to prior ITK, De Ligt was our number 1 option at CB - with other teams that could have been in for him (Barca-Lenglet, Juve-looking at Godin, Bayern-Pavard) seemingly out of the running, perhaps we're free to make a run at him again with the same terms as before. Ajax have a player on their hands who has asked to leave and a shrinking market at the moment.

Wish we would have been more interested in this guy. We could have plugged future left CB and Fabian Ruiz for CM from Betis for the price of what Ajax are asking for De Ligt.
In principle I agree but one thing I have learned from this site over the years is that often times deals like this happen because 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, whenever ago someone from clubs like Barca tapped up him and/or his agent and put the workings of a deal in place and there never really was an opportunity for anyone else to come in unless Barca opted not to go through with it.

We're probably waiting to see if United come back in for Toby, but I really hope we hurry up and make a move for him.

Also according to prior ITK- this is one we have been in touch w/ Ajax about for over a year and unclear whether we have or do not have first option on him.

I'm sure just think for opportunity with cost, clubs to negotiate with, level of talent, etc. those would have been really good acquisitions.

I have no idea how 'first option' would work. Surely it's an open market and we can put in a bid, like anybody else, and it's up to Ajax whether they accept it or not. They owe us nothing and have no reason to give us preferential treatment as far as I know.

I very much doubt we have a first option. We’ve probably just asked to be kept informed on his situation

I think it works as we agree w/ player for wages just as any other club can do and Ajax negotiates with every other club and gives us option to match the agreed upon fee. I don't think they're doing this out of goodwill, I thought that I read it was something discussed during the Sanchez transfer.

With Blind going from Utd to Ajax, Toby potentially going to Utd from us. Looks to me more likely that we have a good chance at De Ligt, compleating a nice 3 way that leaves mostly everyone happy.

No Spurs fan should be happy with losing Toby. We might be making the best of a bad situation by signing De Ligt, but our defence will still be weaker over the next 2-3 years than it would be if we kept Toby.

first Tadic now Blind, unlike Ajax, they're already spending the MDL money I tells yer

Doesn't mean he's gonna be ours, just he's leaving

I was thinking the same but they've been slowly falling further and further away from the top of the Eredivisie so it could just be a way of them trying to appeal to the fans and show they're serious about chasing the title this season

I really think we’re over-egging how vital Toby is to the squad tbh.

Yes he’s brilliant, we all know that, however it looks very much like he no longer wants to be here, and on that basis alone we need to let him go.

And let’s not forget that he’s barely played for us in 2018, and we’ve done just fine with Vertonghen and Sanchez.

I’d be worried if we lost the Toby of 2016-17, but the Toby of 2018 isn’t the same.

Give me the choice of Toby who doesn’t want to be here and MDL who is 18 and on course to be the best in Europe, and it’s a no brainer.

Eh, they have just bought Dusan Tadic for 11.4m euros so they definitely have spent a chunk of their money.
