Mauricio Pochettino: Spurs want Premier League, not domestic cups

he's right about what though, that they won the cup and got relegated? is this a legitimate concern for us?

By aiming for that, they ultimately didn't survive by not concentrating on the priority I suppose. Which would.have been.survival. in our case, competing for the top prizes and Europe.

His comments, in context are about prioritization. Just my take.on it. Take.it or leave it.

He isn't right though, because it's just one example, and a terrible one with no relevance to us. We're not in a relegation fight, we're not going to end up in League One because we won the FA Cup.

We're a team that needs to win something, and soon. We're realistically not winning the league or CL in the next two seasons with the stadium move and Wembley, and winning a cup doesn't mean some kind of automatic finish outside the top four as is being implied.

Context as I've said above. It's about priorities.

Trust Spurs fans to be so precious about something like this, he literally hasn't said anything wrong if read the article in context, it's all about priorities which is something we know about anyway PL/CL -> FAC/CC

That isn't what he meant at all.

TBF the fact that he doesn't come onto SC and run his intended comments by us first before uttering a word is a bit poor :woot:

Obviously, so why use Wigan as an example?

As I said, his comments don't do him any favours - and the fact is the media have predictably bitten his head off, regardless of any actual subtle meaning he may have intended.

prioritization is fine, but Wigan really aren't relevant here. by bringing them into it, it suggests it's not possible to try to win a cup and still be competitive in bigger competitions, yet the other big clubs manage it. those are more relevant comparisons to make.

There. I'm sure that's what you meant :wideyed:

It's happened to him a few times now to be honest, he's still learning how to play the game. You don't see other managers saying similar things - one day Poch will learn (he obviously doesn't care what the Sun thinks or writes, but the club PR department does).

Then the club PR department should prep him. And I think they do, but you can't legislate every time for everything, they could (and do) literally spin everything they can, you'd end up saying nothing at all. Ever.

EDIT: TBH I think we worry way too much about what he says and how it's taken.

DOUBLE EDIT: It's in danger of taking on a life of its own, much like the anti-Spurs bias we're told that we see in the media all the time. Which also isn't there.

Not the lucrative one.

we've qualified for the CL less times than we've failed to, and still managed not to spiral into oblivion. Chelsea, Man U and Liverpool have all failed to qualify for the CL recently and been ok. Arsenal aren't in it this year and will continue to be ok. but we'll somehow be set back years if we don't qualify?

So which one would you like to put most of our eggs into?

It suggests that merely winning an FA Cup or League Cup has less importance for your overall progress than winning the league or CL...why are people hanging onto the Wigan statement when he clarifies his words when he says "OK, I would love to win the Carabao Cup or the FA Cup for our fans"?

@Trix knows far more about the club's runnings than me and I can see his point.

What players would sign for a.club that doesn't compete in the wages bracket, without champs league? Etc etc. The new stadium to pay for. Might not break the club but it would certainly delay things by years without the finance it offers.

Back on topic, i still don't know why people are all precious about what he says in the press. Bit over sensitive, especially when he's talking sense

It's simple really.....we don't pay OTT extortionate wages in order to offset no CL. We might get by one season in the EL as far as retaining our better players was concerned but remember the bulk of them will be on bonuses based on achieving and playing in the CL. Without it we will have far more vultures circling than we have ever had in the past.
