Tottenham: Mauricio Pochettino uses "incredible" detail - Jose Fonte

Putting a bib on in a bit of a sulk? Looking miserable while eating your pasta in the canteen? If you're playing for Mauricio Pochettino, he'll notice.

West Ham defender Jose Fonte, who played under Pochettino at Southampton, has given an insight into the Tottenham manager's "incredible" attention to detail.

Fonte revealed behind-the-scenes analysis of his players' body language is one of the secrets Pochettino uses to unlock their potential.

"Everywhere in the training ground there are cameras," the 33-year-old told MOTD2 Extra.

"If he was giving the bibs and you were not in the team, and your body language was bad, he would call you in the office and say 'Listen, this is not the right way'."

The Argentine is one of the most highly-rated managers in the game having built on his impressive 16 months at Southampton by guiding Tottenham to higher finishes in each of his three seasons in charge.

After a fifth place in 2014-15 they finished third the following season having challenged Leicester for the title, and were runners-up to relentless Chelsea in 2016-17.

Spurs sit third in the Premier League and have won both of their Champions League group games against Apoel Nicosia and Borussia Dortmund.

Fonte believes this progress is stimulated by Pochettino's constant scrutiny and planning.

"In the canteen? Everywhere. He is watching you everywhere, your body language, everything," said the Portugal centre-back.

"He is meticulous, his attention to detail is second to none. He would watch everything you do."

Yet Fonte also revealed Pochettino - who has developed the games of England superstars Harry Kane and Dele Alli at Spurs - also shows warmth that endears him to his players.

"He would put an arm around you and make you feel special. It's good," Fonte added.

"I remember Luke Shaw was like a son to him. Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and myself all had a great relationship with him. He was tough as well when he had to be."

Clearly a man who's comfortable at Spurs and sees his long term future at Tottenham which is great news.

Sometimes I just think all of those hard times we went through when we were shit. All of those Spursy moments, near misses etc was worth it just to have a manager like Pochettino, he's an absolute class act and we couldn't ask for a better person to manage our club.

https://www.fourfourtwo.com/news/redknapp-spurs-boss-pochettino-could-manage-real-madrid

Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp heaped praise on manager Mauricio Pochettino following Tuesday's 1-1 draw against Real Madrid.

Forget Harry Kane, Mauricio Pochettino is good enough to move to Real Madrid according to Jamie Redknapp, who believes the Tottenham boss could manage any club in the world.

Pochettino oversaw Tottenham's 1-1 Group H draw with Champions League titleholders Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday.

England star Kane has been linked with Madrid but former Spurs midfielder Redknapp said Pochettino – who guided the club to second place in the Premier League last season – could swap London for the Spanish capital as he continues to impress.

"Everyone's talking about him. He's up there with the best. He could manage any club in the world make no mistake. Tottenham are very, very lucky to have him," Redknapp told Sky Sports.

"They have one of the best managers in terms of his development of players; he improves footballers and also tactically he's as good as anyone.

"You want to look after him. People are talking about Harry Kane maybe going to Real Madrid, but maybe someone like him as well, unless he gets looked after.

"I'm sure we'll be talking about him in the same terms. He already is, probably."

Tottenham are level with Madrid atop Group H after three matches, while the Londoners are third in the Premier League as they prepare to host Liverpool on Sunday.

Poch: "I'd happily sign a contract for another 10-15 years if Levy wanted me to".

2 days later......

Redknapp: "He needs more money or he could leave for a bigger club".

It's as if they need to be controversial just for the sake of it, because they have nothing else to say that people want to actually listen to.

F365 says: Pochettino shows Mourinho a real masterclass…

http://www.football365.com/news/f365-says-pochettino-shows-mourinho-a-real-masterclass

...Mauricio Pochettino has transformed Tottenham into genuine title contenders and Champions League stalwarts, earning considerably more Premier League points than Mourinho since he became Manchester United manager, whilst having a net transfer spend only just north of bugger all. On Tuesday night he took a team lacking Dele Alli, Victor Wanyama and two international left-backs to the Bernabeu as equals to Real Madrid and emulated Bobby Robson, Rafa Benitez, Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson in returning unbeaten...

Besides, it's not as if Real M. are in a hurry of sacking Zidane any time soon (but at Real M. one never knows). I may be (totally) wrong but Real M. doesn't strike me as a club Pochettino wants to manage, as they not only want but demand instant success - and even winning the CL is no guarantee they won't sack the boss.

There's so much interference and politics at a club like Real Madrid

I'm sure he'd rather stay at Spurs where he could rule the roost like Ferguson or Wenger did at their clubs

Plus if we're challenging for the PL and CL season in, season out, then there's no need to move

The team have improved year on year because of him but also he has really improved!!! The games against Dortmund and Madrid has shown that he can adapt tactically. Last season we went away to Monaco with a suicidal high line and it could’ve been a cricket score to them, this season we beat dortmund at Home and could’ve snuck a winner away at real! Tik a bow poch, bit by bit we are improving to the top top level! Amazing manager. Best since bill nic easily.!

One of the most impressive aspects for me is how he has improved us mentally. It's remarkable to see really.

We have always been this flaky team who even when winning 2-0 with 10 minutes to go you never ever felt sure of the result. Now we are looking relatively comfortable against the best team in Europe with ten minutes to go in their own backyard. It's almost unthinkable!

We've been taking great mental strides for a long time and our game management is utterley superb. When we played Chelsea last year and beat them 2-0 I knew we were more than ready for the big stage, the mentality and intensity that we showed in that match was telling.

just give him whatever he wants to stay. he's our fergie for sure and can cement a real dynasty here, just oozes class in everything he says/does. I wouldn't swap him with any other manager/coach in world football.

Was going to mention that game. I said to my mate during it that i didn't feel nervous at all, he agreed. Strange feeling for a spurs fan.

Something he repeated a fair bit in his first season was about changing the personality of the club. He has succeeded with that and then some.
