Agreed and I think a few people being agahst at this comment are a bit head up their own bums about football. So much happens on the pitch that you could call "cheating". Players yapping insults at each other, sly jabs, "accidental" trips, tactical fouls, throwing the ball away on free kicks/throw ins, the list goes on and on. To him all of that is football and part of what he loves and I think whether we admit it or not the game we love as well. If you start micromanaging evsry bit of that then the game loses its passion. It's just robots peforming preset algorithms and seeing who coded better.

Exactly this. Some of the people calling out Poch's comments for condoning cheating are the same people who'd call "leaving a foot in" or "taking a yellow for the team" all a part of the game.

Poch is gonna get crucified as football fans around the country get on their high horse about diving but it's all bullshit, people only care about diving when it affects them negatively. Salah dived for lpool against WBA and lpool fans didn't give a fuck.

He's right aswell. People celebrate players committing cynical fouls to stop counter attacks as "clever" when it's cheating but then when it comes to diving suddenly everyone's the epitome of morality. Doesn't make sense.

I think he is being honest and all current managers and players would agree with him. Doesn't make him right. It's cheating.
I don't see how it's any worse than, say, applying for handball when there is none. I don't condone diving, but I think the outrage over it is way over the top. Besides, it's incredibly easy to sit in the stands and take the moral high road. It's something else entirely to be out on the pitch with adrenaline pumping.

I couldn't agree more. There are so many cynical fouls in the game which are often seen as clever. I don't like diving but I don't like professional fouls. Personally I never understand why players are allowed to put their arms around opponents in the penalty area, how defenders get away with so many blatant fouls. Were I a ref there would probably be half a dozen penalties in most top level matches

Havnt read exactly what Poch has said but if it’s along the lines of 'Dele keep diving, its ok' then you can’t come out and say that in public, not here in England. It’s just not cricket. Conning the Ref is a Badge of honour in most other leagues

He’s said a few odd things in the last month or so. More than the rest of his entire time at the club

I do hate all this high horse cheating bullshit. The same people who go crazy over a dive or drawn foul are usually more than happy when one of their players commit a cynical foul in midfield that stops a breakaway or a defender pulls a shirt in the box. It all counts as cheating and I do have get why one is considered worse than the other.

Poch also still remembers Owen diving against him in the World Cup.

Did everyone get on their high horses against Owen then? Doubt it because it benefitted the England football team.

Meh, can't say I particularly agree with him, but he has to protect his players, and we're all hypocritical when it comes to football.

And Poch fouled Owen ;)

Agreed. The British superiority complex at play. "Look at those cheating Jonny Foreigner types with their dastardly ways whereas we British are whiter than white, purer than pure." It's laughable.

Similar to how people frown upon the corruption and tax evasion in Latin countries, forgetting that there's also corruption and tax evasion here in Britain. It's just that we tend to hide it. Hypocrisy.

It's got nothing to do with any British superiority complex and or foreigners IMO. You get this mentality all over football, you're right about the hypocrisy, that's exactly what it is.

You could be right but after surveying the coverage in the media over the last few days, one can identify an undercurrent that associates cheating with foreigners. Not by the majority of outlets/journos, granted. Maybe I read too much Twitter :p

Definitely listening to Brazil on TalkSport this morning there was the attitude "We" don't (or shouldn't) do it because we're British. In fact more than an attitude, I'm pretty sure he just came out and said it.

Re the diving comments. Poch is just being honest. He's saying everyone does it but the English have a thing about saying we don't. And he's right. Owen, Shearer, Gerrard, Rooney, Rashford, Young, Dele etc, etc. have all been known to take a dive for the team. English players have been 'diving' for at least 20 years and probably longer. We get all sanctimonious about it and go into denial because it doesn't fit with our vision of ourselves as above all forms of cheating and corruption but it's time to accept it's as much a part of our national game as anyone else's.

he is but his comments aren't going to help us getting 50/50 decisions in our favour

Yep. Brazil and some of the others on Talksport are still living in the 1970's it seems.

Agree with Poch in a way. Diving has become this crazy taboo in England which is seen as a completely despicable act, almost treated worse than awful tackles a lot of the time. It’s against the rules, it gets punished. That’s enough. It’s not a vile evil that’s ‘ruining the game’, and players who dive aren’t morally reprehensible.
Spot on, its no different than when the ball goes out for a throw in and both players appeal for it, 99% of the time they both know who should get the throw, but they do it to deceive the ref and get a decision.
For some reason that example of trying to deceive the ref is fine and acceptable and it never gets mentioned.
Its exactly the same.

They dived in the 70's, it's just that they didn't have as many cameras watching every move.

He'll say he didn't, but I'm pretty sure Brazil dived or went down easily during his playing days.

The hypocrisy is that if conte or maureen had said it people on here would call him on it.

Don't like diving whether it is by dele or anyone else and it should be called out and gotten out of the game.

I've always said that we have a very wierd obsession of diving on this country, like the media focus on diving more than bad tackles for example which should be truly did of from the game and still isn't focused on enough if you ask me.

Matt Phillips tackle on Diaz's at the weekend has got far less attention then Dele's dive and Kane's alleged dive, even the guy that put Sane out for 6 weeks didn't get this much attention, yeah I don't like diving as much as the next man but I'd rather they focus on exposing players who try and injure others compared to a player who tries to con the ref.
