Right, but you can do better than signing Wimmer, even for a backup position. I agree, not all players at a club must be a serious contender for the starting 11 week in week out. There is a huge need for solid back up players. Fans don't tend to like them, but they are needed. But most incomings should be better than the Wimmer-category.

but with a limited budget, shit wages the better signings most probably want guaranteed 1st team football, and to be honest after stepping in for Jan, he did enough to not be dropped.

as mentioned in the CL thread, we need to be finishing in the top 4 and do it season after season till the stadium is paid off. I doubt i'll be about to see it, but 1 day we might get to do all our shopping in Harrods, and pay top wages, but where we are today, and were we was in the 90's early 2000's is like a dream, and as has been mentioned plenty of teams have had plenty of signings that haven't worked.

I actually believe Aurier will do well, especially if Poch does revert to a back 3. Once Foyth builds up I reckon he will be 1 of our future CB's.

I also believe Janssen was just a case of he tried to hard to impress, and just messed his confidence up when he was given the chance, by failing to hit the target, just like Saldado did

Are we certain that these were names on a list Poch submitted to Levy to get as first choice?
OR, were they what Levy got him after 1st, 2nd, 3rd, & maybe 4th choices were unavailable & Poch just said "Yeah, whatever".
It's not an invalid question, but it will get too messy trying to guess who were or were not Pochettino's signings. We know too few of those facts. I mean in general, it would he foolish to think that some of those that didn't work out he simply weren't keen on in the first place, but to pinpoint who those individuals were is too darn difficult. Should count towards some benefit of the doubt though, for sure.

Haha not considering Son an 'absolute success' is one of the worst opinions I have seen on this site.

Vorm and Trippier have also been very good signings, particularly Tripps.

It could also be argues that Wimmer was a good signing considering he was decent enough for us and then we made a considerable profit on him as well.

Poch on no transfers. Seems calm

https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/fo...&utm_source=Twitter&__twitter_impression=true

We’re working hard trying to improve the squad. It’s a market that has only started to move very quickly after the World Cup and then this season the transfer window closes on 9 August [before the start of the Premier Leagueseason].

Be sure that we are going to do some movement but like always, we’re working hard. No rash decisions. I’m not worried.

Sounds promising.

Apparently he really said "sign someone ffs Levy out!" but they edited that out of the papers.

Gotta have a bit of "man love"* for this guy.
Making the most of what he has.
We're so lucky to have him.

@Metalhead thought I’d respond to your post in the itk thread in here. It’s all detailed in poch’s Book in levy’s chapter on pages 307 to 309.

I actually got it wrong. I thought Levy had said he doesn’t foresee spending £60m on a player. What he actually says is “if we make a £60 million investment in a player, that means somebody else is going to be affected in our starting xi, and if we make a mistake, it’s going to be very costly”.

So he doesn’t rule out a large purchase, although what isn’t clear is what he means by investment. He must just mean fee, I can’t see that he’s including wages in that as that’s not realistic nowadays for top players. If he’s including wages in such a statement then that’s a real concern.

Absolutely. I guess that a large transfer fee, as a one off (and not including wages) is perfectly manageable as they are almost always staggered over a period of time but then when you include what would almost certainly be a large weekly salary (I know that 'large' is somewhat subjective but say 100k per week) then you are immediately adding a significant amount to the deal and then you have the issue of the impact of wages on the other squad members and it can get quite financially burdensome.

I'm not saying that Poch is upset or worried, but he's hardly going to come out at this late stage of the transfer window, during pre-season prep, and start mouthing-off about Levy.

Wait until November and the build-up to the January transfer window; that's when we might hear under-currents through the media of what Poch really thought of the summer business, with an eye on influencing winter transfers.

Why cant people just take his words at face value instead of trying to crowbar in their own narrative about whats 'really' happening.
Now would be the exact time to start putting pressure on Levy if he wasn't happy, with two weeks of the window left.
He's not worried, just accept it.

@Danny Boy Interested to hear your views on this mate, dont be shy, it's a forum afterall.

Exactly people are clinging to Pochettino’s comments at the end of last season like it’s the only thing he has ever said. It’s like Poch and Levy haven’t spoke since those comments and Poch is just in limbo unaware of what’s going on with Levy.

These latest quotes will just be conveniently ignored by many, just like the comments about the new stadium not meaning we'll instantly have loads of cash to spend.
The selectiveness on here is quite impressive sometimes.
