Redknapp days were my favourite. So many great players.

We ultimately underachieved with what was arguably and I stress arguably a superior group of players to the ones we have now.

Bale, Madrid, VDV were all unquestionably world class....We could and should have won at least an FA Cup and probably a league title with that group...We also passed up numerous opportunities to strengthen: Suarez, Dzeko, Aguero and Cahill were all gettable at certain points. I kind of feel like this summer may go down as our equivalent of the Saha and Nelsen fiasco with this group.

As ever - when the moment came to step on the accelerator....Levy flinched.

I really hope more than anything that Poch can turn this all around and we win the lot against the odds.

Think it's asking a lot to win something this season mate I would take consistency and some clean sheets right now.

What do you mean by proper ambition?

The club were looking at a number of players in the Summer, but Porch only interested in fraction of them. By showing proper ambition I assume you mean get the players in Porch wanted. Not sure how you can force Yanited to sell us Martial and Ajax said DeJong wasn't going either. Grealish was the only one we really fucked up on, and would that really be classed as showing proper ambition?
Like I said the list of players Porch wanted was short but it wasn't like they were all readily available. Personally I think DeJong could have been done if we over paid, but I doubt Martial was the same.

(1) can't blame him for having a short list as it avoids a cycle of getting in players who are tough to move which in turn makes new buys tougher
(2) Grealish was easy and we stuffed it up and let down Poch and the player
(3) Zaha was another long term Poch target who it seems we mucked up this summer and last summer

In Levy's eyes, Poch is an absolute success because having 3 Champions League qualifications with negligible net transfer spend has generated huge amount of cash for Levy in terms of CL revenue, and all the associated sponsorship leverage that goes with this. I'm sure AIA pay more to sponsor CL team. Nike are paying top dollar due to CL exposure etc etc. I doubt whether Levy is too arsed about winning league as long as we qualify each season for CL. without spending too much on buying players.,
The bank account at spurs will always be bigger and more important than the trophy cabinet under the current ownership.

Appreciate the info from Trix but I don't believe for one minute that Poch onky wanted a small clutch of players (Martial, de Jong) or nothing.
I picture it going like this:

Poch, I want one of: Ndombele, Ceballos, Kovacic, or De Jong for central midfield.
Levy: I'll do 30mil with a 4 year payment plan to those clubs.
Them: Fuck off.
Levy: To Poch- how about Andre Gomes.
Poch: Fuck off.

Are you using those names for the purposes of making your point, or has there been concrete information that I've missed (I haven't had much time to be on here lately)?

  • Hercules told us early on we had asked about Ndombele but their price was too high.
  • Trix just let us know about De Jong today/yesterday but that has all come out in the papers recently anyways
  • Ceballos we had a cryptic on and was confirmed it was him by ITK
  • Kovacic I believe was mentioned near the end of the window when his deal to Chelsea was happening that he was a top target, it made too much sense for him not to be

My problem with Poch is his game management.. Good results over the past few seasons have masked this limitation. Not a knee jerk comment or opinion as I have been saying this long before the Juventus game last season.

Some people tend to only remember the times when subs or tactical tweaks didn't work out. No manager will get it right every single time. Fulham at home, Chelsea away, Bournemouth away are recent examples from the top of my head where subs and tactical tweaks changed the flow of the game and contributed to us winning.

A lot of what I see is scoreline analysis.

Someone said that Ramos had success I believe that league cup win was down to M.Jol even tho he had left by then it was his team and his style of play.

I keep hearing how we fucked up the Grealish deal.Craig Bellamy on ‘The Debate’ a few weeks ago said that wasn’t in any way shape or form Levys fault. The price was set, We tried to push it through but the problem was there wasn’t anybody who we could get to sanction the deal because the takeover was going through.Once the new owners came in they upped the price massively and basically said he’s not leaving anyway.Cant blame Spurs for that.

Nah, could have been done had we moved sooner.

I think Poch is much more culpable if that’s the right word for our mess of a window than levy, he doesn’t buy just for the sake of it and has a very narrow range of players he wants . I don’t think he has a big issue with zero players in , the fans and even the players do though

Using a bit of retrospective, Ramos was a success up until we won the Worthy's. I don't think we won more than a couple of games between then and the October.

His problem was more likely to be man management than anything else, and couldn't control the egos. He seemed similar at Madrid, good for 8 months or so, then went a bit dour.

I still miss the Redknapp days, even though we didn't win anything.
Selling Berbatov and Keane didn't help Ramos.
